Looking Ahead to Idaho

Comments 20 comments so far by

While it seems that Husker fans are laser-focused on the home date with Texas in October, the first test of the season might come at home in week two against the Idaho Vandals. The opening week, Nebraska hosts a Western Kentucky team that was winless in 2009. Hardly the kind of team that pulls an upset in Lincoln. But Idaho has some elements that get your attention.

The first would be North Platte product Nathan Enderle, Idaho's senior quarterback. He stands 6'5" and at 227 lbs. is built like an NFL signal caller. And in 11 starts last season he threw 22 touchdown passes, just nine interceptions, completed 62% of his passes and amassed nearly 3,000 passing yards. How did he get out of the state? Two words: Bill Callahan. While he was trading text messages with Josh Freeman, Enderle was headed west.

They've got some big receivers returning. One goes 6'1", another goes 6'3", yet another goes 6'4", and still another goes 6'6". That foursome each caught over 30 passes and together they compiled over 2,000 yards receiving. So they should provide a good test for Nebraska's secondary.

Then they like to deploy small running backs. Running back Princeton McCarty averaged nearly 6 yards per carry and also made some big plays as a receiver. These offensive pieces were a big reason that the Vandals won 8 games last season.

The defense was not special as they allowed opponents to score an average of 36 points. But they do return nearly everybody on that side of the ball, which could make them much better.

No, Idaho won't be the favorite. It won't be a pick 'em game. But as non-conference tests go, this one could be interesting.

Idaho also has a coach with guts. I refuse to watch any game on Boise State's dang blue field (just seems wrong to me), so I didn't watch the Vandals in the Humanitarian Bowl. I did catch the end of the game though. I had to route for a guy who would go for two to win with just a few ticks left.

I'll bet they hold nothing back in Lincoln.

Matt Mar 17 10

I did watch the Humanitarian Bowl (though the smurfturf almost ruined my LCD screen), and Idaho was a very potent team on offense and should not be underestimated on that side of the ball. If anything, they reminded me of Texas Tech in their "offense first" philosophy they (until recently) employed.

Defensively, Idaho is not good at all and made Arizona's defense look stout and competent. But as NU-ISU-Fan said, their coach has guts (and balls, and gonads, and cojones, and intestinal fortitude...) to spare.

Unless this game turns into a shootout, then I won't be worried. But if we're having to match them score-for-score, well...our offense hasn't exactly been known for its basic competency this past season, has it?

Was I the only one forced to watch the end of their bowl game while missing our Holiday Bowl? I did put the Holiday Bowl on espn360 on my laptop, but it was on such a delay that I hardly caught anything (O'Hanlon's INT) before the Idaho game mercifully ended.

First off, Nebraska offered him to walk-on, second, we would have been talking to Harison Beck, not Josh Freeman. I hate it when people don't look things up before they type dumb articles.

I do like Enderle though. I hope he plays well, but that Nebraska still womps them.

Ty Hughes Mar 17 10

I think Enderle will be just like the AZ quarterback. Looks good physically, okay numbers, but against much lesser competition. We wax these guys and we should.

Yaaaawwwwwnnnnn.... Huh? What was that? Did someone say something? Idawho? Really? I mean Really? Is this the same "test" we hear about every year? FIU man... Schnellenberger knows how to beat Nebraska man... he did it over two decades ago... He's going to come in an light up NU... Wait, what about the Nevada Wolfpack??? The Pistol!! Dude, Fear the Pistol!! In case no one else noticed, Kevin Cosgrove is at Minnesota now... No more narrow escapes to Ball State... Sheesh... let's stop acting like we still have a chance to suck it up... I mean really!! I know that the Callahan era was a HUGE blow to the team and the fans, but hey... he's gone... LONG gone. Don't believe the hype... Idaho is going to get steamrolled, as will Western Kentucky and SD State (Thanks Steve!) The first test of the season is Washington.

Boz Mar 17 10

you better be worried because you are not near as good as you think you are..

Terry Mar 17 10

I live 30 minutes from Moscow and Saw Idaho play a couple of times last year and they do ave a good offense but I just cant see where they will match up with us on either side of the ball. Enderle isnt mobile and a few blitzes should throw him off his game. I will say he is a very fine young man though and represents Nebraska well in this program. But I just dont see Idaho doing much against a Pelini defense and Idaho isnt very deep. The key will not to let them get the long ball off becuase his receivers do have very good hands andrun good routes.

Jeff Mar 17 10

NU may not be as good as we think, but if Idaho even makes it a close game, the Huskers ought to just dissolve the program and add another women's sport.

Boz Mar 17 10

Promise Jeff !!!! You will just say the season is early or we are working out the offense or we turned the ball over 6 times...You guys got real good at those excuses last year.

Idaho Husker Mar 17 10

Growing up in Ne. Been a Husker fan for life. Having season tickets to BSU I agree that the Blue turf is ugly but has certainly worked well for the university for recognition. The team however is a quality product. They might struggle with depth if they had to play in a big conference but for one or two games a year they are very well coached and able to beat anyone! IDAHO on the other hand had a new coach last year that did a nice job but they are not in Nebraska's league. If we struggle with them it will be a long season!!!!! Must be struggling for topics to write about!!! I do plan to bring back some Vandal friends so they can experience a real football game!!

Count Istvan Mar 17 10

"Boz" huh? Correct me if I am wrong but wasn't one of Nebraskas 10 wins last year against the "Boz" old team?

BTW Nebraska beats Idaho by 50.

Boz's master Mar 17 10

Boz, you are uneducated to say the least. NU is going to roll most of the teams on the schedule next year. Suh was given way too much credit for the team's success thanks to ESPN's "wagon jumping" tendencies. Suh is a beast, but football is a team game. The understanding that NU's players have of the scheme along with team chemistry is not quantifiable. The offense showed against a decent yet unprepared Arizona defense that they are capable. Bo proved by pulling green jerseys from QBs in spring practice that the QBs will need to run with a sense of purpose and be ready to play physical football. Will NU beat Texas? Not sure, but it will undoubtedly be a competitive game on both sides. Will NU be better than 2009? There is no reason to suggest otherwise, unless you work for ESPN and believe that Suh was the only person responsible for success last year. I give Suh a ton of credit. If he isn't taken 1st in the draft it's a shame, but Suh wasn't that great of a player in 2007, and he wasn't all american material in 2008 (in fact, no one outside of the husker program was even talking about him a year ago). That just proves what good coaching can bring to the party. Thanks for bringing negative and sarcastic comments to Husker boards Boz...real original and manly of you. You probably think that strippers like you too...best of luck next season.

"First off, Nebraska offered him to walk-on, second, we would have been talking to Harison Beck, not Josh Freeman. I hate it when people don't look things up before they type dumb articles."

Enderle redshirted in 2006, and was in the Idaho class of 2006. Josh Freeman was in the Kansas State class of 2006. Harrison Beck was in the class of 2005. Article is correct.

NUWowser Mar 18 10

Two Words, Husker Fans, Iowa State.

Nebraska should have WAXED Iowa State but instead eight turnovers and lack of concentration lose the game. nebraska defense treid to win it, but the offense just did not care.

Nebraska will win.

Jeff Mar 18 10

Why do you hate NU so much Boz? Only reason I can think of is that NU beats the teams you root for like a drum.

Why do I hate Miami? The 1984 Orange Bowl, and their other 4 National Champs.

The difference between you and me? I don't lurk Miami sites, whining about them.

Washington scares me - not Idaho

Dan Apr 02 10

Washington doesn't scare me. Their Defense just isn't up to it, and as good as Jake Locker is, he doesn't have enough weapons around him. Coach Sark is taking them the right direction, but he doesn't have the horses...yet. I'm guessing he wishes Locker had another year. Because Jake is off to the NFL after this season.
