Blogpoll Ballot – Week 12
Here again we present the Big Red Network ballot for the college football top 25 poll at M Go Blog.
Once again, Kansas and Hawaii are #1 and #2. For those would complain about those rankings, I submit the 1983 Huskers. Only one team from Nebraska’s regular season schedule that year finished in the AP top 20. Both Kansas and Hawaii will face one team in the regular season that will finish in the top 25 (Missouri and Boise State). To suggest that these teams don’t deserve a title shot after a perfect regular season, is tantamount to saying the 1983 Huskers should not have been playing for a national championship. Boise State’s win over Oklahoma should be all the proof we need that schools from small conferences can play with the big boys. That said, if Kansas or Hawaii lose either (or both) of their next two games they go to the back of the line for one-loss teams.
| Rank | Team | Delta |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Kansas | -- |
| 2 | Hawaii | -- |

So not only does Hawaii not have a quality win, the teams they've sqeaked by have all been pasted by BCS schools and none have a quality win.
it won't get more impressive with Boise.
@Washington L 24-10

Lets all take step back and realize that we need a play-off system. Wouldn't it be great to see play-off football during the 5-6 week lay off that most teams have before there bowl game. I went to a division 2 school and it was great to see a football championship settled on the field instead of computers and sports writers. I don't want to hear anything about how they just can't do it. I disagree, still have your major bowls hosting a playoff game and the winner then plays for it all.

One of the laziest and most ridiculous things you can do is to look at only one variable in any situation. It's like releasing a product because revenues are going to be $1 mil and ignoring the fact that the related expenses are going to be $1.2 million. I hate to think of all the bad government policy stemming from that kind of thinking. You can't just look at one factor, in this case the win-loss record, to judge who should play for the championship. Lets think of the consequences if win loss records alone decided who would play for the national championship every year. Who would schedule a non-conference opponent worth a damn? Yes that would be good for college football. Heh, who's playing this week, why its Nebraska versus Akron. What about USC, they're playing Pacific. And Ohio State? They're facing the mighty Golden Eagles of Tennessee Tech. Whoopie! I love college football! Give me a break. Teams should be rewarded for scheduling worthwhile opponents, not rewarded if they don't. And yes I'm aware teams might schedule good opponents for other reasons but I would think many teams would choose not to.

J Mo,
In any other year, I might agree with you. But with all of the crazy upsets this season, I don't think we have any other way of assessing who's better than who. Going back to Boise State's victory over OU a year ago (and Wake Forest's improbable run). The "brand names" and even "power conferences" of college football don't seem to mean anything this year. And margin of victory? Meaningless (compare KU vs. NU, KU vs. KSU, NU vs. KSU). If Hawaii wins two more games, I want to see them against a top team, whether that's Kansas or a one-loss "brand" like LSU or Ohio State. By the way, that's also how we'd get a playoff, is with these so called-weaker teams beating traditional powers.
Boise State has lost a single game since beating OU. And that was a better team than the Stanford squad that beat USC. If Hawaii beats Boise State, that's not too different than KU's regular season if they get past Missouri.

Steve,
If Hawaii does go undefeated then I suppose they deserve a shot in a BCS game to show what they can do against a quality BCS conference team, but I just can't see how they deserve to play for the national championship. I understand given how the year has gone that an undefeated record looks pretty good no matter who you were playing, but when you factor in the overtimes against especially weak teams, I just can't see it. Using your scenario with Kansas at #1 and Hawaii at #2, if those two teams and LSU win out I just don't know how you could deny LSU a shot at the championship. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on that one.

J Mo,
In that scenario, I suspect the AP voters would give LSU a split title. Really though, I expect more upsets at the top. It seems to be the rule this year and all of the top teams (except Ohio State) have tough games remaining. Odds are that KU or Hawaii will go down before we could even see them face-off.
