What’s Scary About Kansas State?
Nebraska fans have a few reasons to be anxious about the Husker's Big 12 opener this year against the Kansas State Wildcats. With Bill Snyder at the helm, KSU is always prepared to the highest of their abilities. Snyder has always been able to get the most out of his players by finding a way to fit his roster into a system that best suits their skills and experience. Currently, that system is built around one of the best returning running backs in the Big 12, Daniel Thomas. With another year under his belt in this offensive system and style of running attack, things are lining up for Thomas to be a dangerous weapon against even some of the best run defenses in the conference.
Last year, as a Junior, the situation Thomas went through is very similar to what NU's own Roy Helu, Jr. had to deal with. Like Helu, Thomas played much of the season with a shoulder injury, and at times, had to carry the team to victory. Even playing at less than 100%, he piled up Helu-like numbers, over 1200 yards for over 5 yards/carry and 11 touchdowns. And this year, he has an offensive line loaded with upperclassmen and built for downhill running. The expected starters include 3 Seniors and 2 Juniors that average more than 6'4" and 313 lbs.
Outside of the running game, it's difficult to see what the rest offense may be able to muster. While Carson Coffman started at QB in four games last year, his job is not necessarily on solid ground. And while the question of who will be throwing the ball is still undecided, it's still unknown who exactly will step in to catch those passes. Kansas State returns no receiver with any significant statistics, but do bring in a couple of transfers and JUCO's who may show some ability. With question marks in these areas, there's no doubt that Thomas will be the make or break in most games this season.
With the Nebraska quarterbacking situation unsettled as we head into the fall, the biggest concern from the Wildcat defense will be the "ball-hawking" safeties. As sophomores last year, Emmanuel Lamur and Tysyn Harman combined for eight interceptions. If they can trust the young linebacker group to stop plays from getting to the second level, they can sit in center field and disrupt all but the more efficient passing teams in the Big 12. While Texas Tech was able to gouge them for 554 yards in the air and 8 TD's in 2009, the secondary will be more likely to finish out their plays and stop many big gains with that extra year of experience.
There has never been a question about how hard Snyder works his team in the spring and summer, and this year is no different. He wanted his team to feel the sting of losing to Louisiana, which turned out to be the difference between playing in a bowl game and watching those games from a couch. Snyder stressed the importance of finishing every snap and every game, a lesson that Husker fans have surely learned as well. His skills in acquiring JUCO's to shore up a position like Defensive Line, means that he's able to turn a weak area into one with players eager to compete. The Wildcats will be hungry for a post season appearance this year and starting off on the right foot against a highly touted Nebraska squad will be all the motivation that they need to try and match up against the Big Red.

Other than Daniel Thomas, the only thing that scares me is that it’s a Thursday night game in Manhattan. We’ll probably have less red in the stands than a typical Saturday game, the crowd will be riled up, and the K-State fans are pissed that we’re leaving the conference. Last year’s Thursday night road game turned out OK, but I’d hate to see this become a trend.

I was a little worried about that as well, but historically, Nebraska likes Thursday night games. They are 5-0 on Away Thursday night games on ESPN.

This game may also be a harbinger of how Big Red will be treated on road trips in the conference.
Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

This game and the AtM game have me the most worried currently. KSU will give us everything they have and we better be up for it. How many more talented Husker teams has Snyder beaten at home? More then enough to make a Thursday night in Manhattan a daunting task.
The Aggies have the potetnial to turn any game the play into a shootout and I fear we won’t win a shootout if we get into one.
8/20/2010
This game will dictate how the rest of the season goes. Crafty old Snyder will have his team ready to play… Honestly, it is the most worrisome game to me.
8/20/2010
Too bad the last time you play in manhattan as part of the big 12 will be a loss. Make that 5-1 in away Thursday night games! And yeah be prepared…kstate fans are p!ssed you left them out to dry.
8/20/2010
kstater - you sound pretty confident considering the beatdown last year. Even though the North was up for grabs you still had more to lose than NU as a bowl trip was on the line. Not to mention we played worse at home last year than on the road.
I doubt we come into this game unfocused and as much as it worries me we still won in Columbia last year. That place has been hell for us this decade. Bo is a good coach and so is Snyder. Should be an amazing game.
8/20/2010
“And yeah be prepared…kstate fans are p!ssed you left them out to dry.”
Forgive them, Husker fans, for they know not what they do. In 3-5 years, when Texas has its Bevo Network firmly in place and goes independent, they’ll know who the real villain is.
As for this game, itself: I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous. A jacked-up crowd plus (God forbid) one or two untimely NU turnovers equals things getting out of hand, fast. But this Nebraska team and its coach seem to thrive on the road, and I don’t expect them to be overlooking this game at all. They know KSU will throw the kitchen sink at them, and they’ll be ready for it.
8/20/2010
Another K-Stater here looking forward to this game. We will be the underdog, and I expect there will be some venom from the fans in Manhattan. I for one will miss playing the Huskers and have a great deal of respect for the tradition, fans and the strength of this year’s defense. I expect this to be a close game. I think it comes down to the quarterbacks for both teams—not so much who will win the game for their team, but who will keep from losing the game for their team.
8/20/2010
Huskers 45
Pussycats 17
8/20/2010
This is a game most K-staters are looking forward to. I personally hate to see us end the battles with Snyder at the helm, anyway.
Thomas is bigger and stronger than last season, and with a big experienced offensive line and a masher fullback people can expect a tough run game. The receivers will be better than last year and there are various options with the Wildcat formation. This year we probably won’t have to go with a quarterback who had a torn rotator cuff injury to his throwing arm.
Even with a suspect Wildcat defense, Husker fans need to be leary of this game.
8/20/2010
“There’s no place like Nebraska.” Thank goodness! THE one and only University in the State.
8/20/2010
I’m not quite as confident as kstater (up above) but I will tell you that there is plenty to be scared of about this years K-State squad for opposing teams on our schedule.
For starters, having a year under their belt makes such a big difference in what the coaching staff can do within thier offensive/defensive playbooks. Last year was a learning process for everyone so things were kept very simple. This year things will “open up” so to speak and that will make a big difference.
Not many people know that the three running backs behind Daniel Thomas (William Powell, John Hubert & DeMarcus Robinson) are very talented, fast & shifty players. It should be a nice change up to DT’s power running style.
John Hubert broke almost all of Ladanian Tomlinson’s rushing records from High School… and he’s not even a starter!
With 4 of five offensive starters returning (and another 5 or 6 breathing down their neck) the offensive line will be the best we’ve had since 2003.
Our WR’s are underrated because of their lack of experience in our system, but don’t mistake that for a lack of talent because this bunch as a whole has more than last years recieving squad.
From Ron Prince’s last year to Bill Snyder’s first, Kansas St. went from 117th in total defense to 41st. That’s in one season. If they even come remotely close to that kind of improvement between last year and this year we will have a top 25/15 defense in 2010.
Without rambling on, there is much more talent on this team than most people will give Kansas St. credit for, and they will be a VERY dangerous team if they can find a passing game.
We will find out on September 4th when UCLA comes to town.
8/20/2010
Both programs know the frustration and pain from having an idiot former coach and the rebuilding that has to occur. NU has a year on KSU in the rebuilding journey. Snyder will return the program to a highly successful level. I too will miss the rivalry. After both teams have returned to their prior level of success we wont be playing anymore. To bad. I expect a rowdy emotional game in Man that will be decided by turnovers (Man police Dept has already met about that game and are making special plans to patrol the parking lot and Aggieville). NU should be favored, I will not be surprised if KSU wins the coaching battle and the game. Only an NU fan could like Bo. He has a “rumpled presence” about him
8/20/2010
So what. We like “rumpled”.
8/20/2010
I can’t wait for this game. Excuse the K-State fan that first posted. I think this will be a great game and people across the nation will see 2 teams that will “fight to the death”. As far as predictions, as a Wildcat myself, I am bias. But it will be a great game and a great game to be at. But as far as the 45-17 predictions and the “beat down” comment. Get over yourself. The winning team won’t win by more than 10 points. And there was no beat down at Nebraska last year. You must be talking about another game. I too am pissed ya’ll are leaving. The Big 8 needed to stick together. I understand the wanting to leave deal. But I’m still no happy about it. We’ve had so many great battles for the North. I hate to see it go. But I got a feeling the last one might be the best. EMAW

If we lose one road game this year, this will be it.

Although a very dedicated live and die Wildcat fan now, I was born, raised, and educated in Nebraska leaving the state in 1964, being transfered to Kansas. I listened to Husker ganes starting in 1948 as a boy and still follow them.
Nebraska, I feel, deserted all their fans in the big 12 area for only one reason, money, money, money. Pearlman is no real Nebraskan but is a money comes first Chanceller that tipifys todays college leaders.I am very distured by the move.
KSU will win this game if they stay away from fumbles and interceptions. The motivation is very strong.

I think you mean “Helu put up Thomas-like numbers.”
From the Big12 site…
1. Thomas 1265yds… 5.1avg… 11TD… 105.4/gm
2. Robinson (ISU)
3. Toston (OSU)
4. Helu 1147yds… 5.2avg… 10TD… 81.9/gm

I’m disappointed to see Nebraska leave, but if you want to leave…don’t let the door hit you in the backside. I know some Kstate fans are pissed, but I think you will be surprised how well Nebraska fans will be treated in Manhattan. Good luck being Ohio State’s little b$%#@$ instead of Texas’. In the future, Nebraska will regret the tradition it broke, but that is not a surprise since Nebraska isn’t the same Nebraska of the 70’s,80’s, and 90’s…you seem to have forgot what Big Red tradition means. Good luck in Manhattan.
8/21/2010
Hate to see this rivalry come to an end. Love hating the ‘huskers!!
Kansas City, MO
8/21/2010
I’m really surprised that KStater’s are so sad to see us leave. You’d think they wouldn’t miss the 5 game win streak that we’re on and the “rivalry-like” 76-15-3 all time record we hold against them. While there was much tradition with our Big Eight brethren, tradition died in the Big 12. P.s. We did love despising those Wildcats, too.

@kstater….better to be pissed off the pissed on. Let it go and good luck in the new big1210.

What’s scary about K-State?
Or: When house cats attack!
OK, so maybe Nebraska didn’t have K-State’s best interests at heart, when they solicited a move to “greener” pastures. BUT, who doubts that there was some “oh, that’s right, what about poor lil K-State and Iowa State?” At least a reference or two, in the media.
Kansas State is the perfect example of a team, whose fans might actually despise Nebraska fans the most, yet who I enjoy seeing (have some success.)
For two reasons. Knowing their record of being one of the historically worst programs of all time, before Snyder. Then, Snyder himself. He’ll be a college HOF inductee, one day. I don’t think he’ll ever really get his due as one of the best coaches ever. Which, he obviously is. Simply because, he did what he did- AT K-State. They won 22 games, in the 1980’s! Including Snyder’s first year. When his teams talent approached Nebraska’s, during Solich’s years, he and his staff flat outmatched Solich’s. That 2000 game is the one I always think of, not the ‘03 game. Because Nebraska’s 2000 team had more talent, across the board. You could say K-State’s ‘03 team easily had more offensive skill, with Sproles and Roberson.
So, at 70, he’s the scary one. He puts the “teeth and claws” in what otherwise would be the mild house cats, of college football.
I can’t be concerned about them specifically, though. Like Osborne’s non championship teams, this team has “bigger fish” to fry. If Nebraska is legitimate, Pelini and staff will impart the proper perspective to their players and have them physically prepared, game to game, for the conference schedule. If not, then the K-State game will only be the first indicator of how Nebraska isn’t ready, enough.
Because, like K-State, Nebraska is really dependent upon great coaching.

Tom, I didn’t actually see you use “despising,” before I posted mine. Just a wild coincidence!
So, no intentional plagiarism.
Did seem like the perfect word choice though, huh?

Perspective:
Nebraska’s record through this tumultuous period over KSU is 7-5 (‘98-‘09). I know you kstaters don’t like NU fans pointing out history, but I think you can respect the RECENT history here. Don’t get me wrong, KSU has shown it can be a tough team under Snyder, but not consistently. As you can see, KSU could only muster 5 wins over an NU program that started it’s slip under Solich and took a complete nose dive under Callahan. Despite the coaching ups and downs up here, NU has managed 5 straight wins over KSU during it’s darkest period since the 1950s.
Will KSU be a tough game for NU this year? Sure it will. If NU is not ready to play, KSU could sneak up on them, no doubt. But NU will be the favorite by 7+ points and should take care of business in Manhattan.
The fact the towns police are having meetings about fan control for this game is shameful. Many of you on this board sound like classy fans and it surprises me there is a need for extra security just b/c NU is leaving for the Big 10. My friend’s tires got slashed in Lawrence several years back and I think it’s lame NU fans need to be worried about similar activities in the little apple this year.
People say NU moved conferences for the money, and they’re right! $400+ million a year in federal research cash! Those of you thinking NU left the Big 12 for $9 million more football bucks are reacting out of emotion (jealousy) and not considering the true facts. NU is taking a huge risk, football wise, moving to the Big 10. The team is set up right now to dominate the north and take a back seat to no one in the conference. Why would we want to leave??? NU fans are down right pissed we will not get the opportunity to even the score with Texas, TTech, etc. The Big10 is the Big unkown and a mighty risk, but $400 million for the University and the State, plus STABILITY is a sweetheart deal you just don’t pass up. Ask yourself, KSU, KU, ISU if you’d be in the Big 10 right now if offered. Yeah, that’s what I thought…I know all the former Big 8 school fans know this and just decide to throw negative comments out to take a cheap shot at NU and T.O. out of frustration over NUs success…
To those cursing, tire slashing, battery throwing fans getting ready in Manhattan… GROW UP !

I too think the K State game will be a toughie. I do think, though, that the schedule does help us a bit. The game is 12 days after what should be a very easy game against South Dakota State, so our starters will be plenty fresh for the game. In fact, I worry if they might be TOO rested and out of synch at K State. But there will be plenty of time to watch tape on K State.
On the flip side, the game is 9 days before the big Texas game. While still clearly in “trap game” territory, it might be long enough to make a difference.
To me, this game is going to be just like the Missouri game last year, except that Missouri had a stout defense and bad offense. K State’s offense should be tougher to deal with, but I don’t see it’s defense as that big of a threat. Giving up 23 points to UCLA last year is inexcusable, IMO. 38 points to Mizzou?
Crystal ball says close win for the Huskers.
8/21/2010
Eric R - It was a beatdown. It was one of the few games last year where I didn’t really get nervous. Anytime you lose by two touchdowns and only score three points classifies as a beatdown. Especially when its a two touchdown lead by the fourth quarter. I don’t think this game will be like that though. It will be close. A three point win is my guess. Not sure by who though.

Guys,
I don’t think the KSU Offense is going to decide the game…Nebraska defense went up against much more potent offenses in 2009 and shut them down. This years defense will be close to as good as it was last year (if not better) so I don’t think much will change.
The deciding factor of the game is going to be the KState defense…and there is nothing scary about that. A Nebraska offsense that ranked 101st in passing in the FBS and 67th overall rushing in the FBS scored 17 points including 14 unanswered ones off of two drives of 60 plus yards. I’d say that a weak offense like we had last year moving the ball like that in the 2nd and 3rd quarters is something to be worried about…because the Nebraska offense looks to be MUCH better this year.
Is the KState defense going to be able to handle it? I just don’t think it will. They’re shaky at two positions…cornerback AND very shallow and shaky at linebacker. Their secondary is good but if they don’t get a good pass rush from their front four and the linebackers, it won’t matter how good the secondary is. If they run the 4-2-5 like they have been…Nebraska will gash em for rushing yards this year with healthy backs and a huge improvement on the o-line.
I see this being a defensive battle just like last year (17-3 says defensive battle).
8/22/2010
To the contrary, Kansas St. should have one of the better secondaries in the Big 12, led by two of the best safeties in the country.
The defense is young, and has much to prove but it still has Emmanuel Lamur, Tyson Hartman, a health Brandon Harold, and a bunch of other ball hawks like David Garrett, Alex Hrebec, Antonio Felder etc. etc.
Don’t forget, This game is in Manhattan… and they are well aware that this is the final conference game in a 90+ year history between these two teams. Snyder will have his boys ready to play on October 7th.
If Kansas St. beats UCLA to start the year, they will almost assuredly be 4-0 going into the conference opener with Nebraska… and if that’s the case, then get ready for a scrap in Manhattan Kansas. It will be a Thursday night road game against a coach that will have plays ready that he hasn’t shown all season.
Good Luck, I hope both teams are undefeated going into that game. It’s a shame to me to see the fall of the Big 12 Conference. It will be sad to see Colorado and Nebraska go.
If the Big 12 is smart, they will get their chips in order before the next conference shake up, so they can avoid being caught with their pants down like they did the first go around. Adding teams like TCU, Boise St., Cincinnati, Fresno St. (to name a few) could all potentially right a ship that is on otherwise shaky waters.
I’m just not sure if Dan Beebe is the man that can make it happen.
8/27/2010
Daniel Thomas is so legit. I’m actually quite a fan of watching him run. He ripped off some nice runs against us last year…..But man, I wish that dude played for us. I highly doubt our offense would have struggled. The dude would look good in Husker scarlet n cream. just my thoughts.
8/31/2010
Wasnt K State ranked like 85th in the coaches poll for 2010? It amazes me that these idiots talk about rivalry when weve owned them 77-15-2. I thought it was even funnier when absolutely no one was making them offers to join their conference. And yeah Daniel Thomas is for real, hey he was even voted to the Rivals All Losers team ( good players on bad teams ) http://collegefootball.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1095991
Lovin it
