Perhaps after Nebraska's devastating loss to Wisconsin in the Big Ten championship game, you've throttled back on your enthusiasm for college football this season. Then again, some of us are so hooked on college football that we watched not only Army-Navy last weekend but also Georgia Southern and Jackson State play. The bowl season kicks off tomorrow with the New Mexico Bowl and Famous Idaho Potato Bowl (what's that trophy look like?). Here's a bit of a preview, for those that can't resist.
At 1 pm ET on EPSN you see Arizona against Nevada. The Wildcats, now coached by former Michigan and West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez. Nebraska fans should find RichRod's zone read offense highly watchable. Nevada's pistol offense can be pretty compelling as well. Both teams had their struggles defensively. So this could be a real barn-burner. No, the stakes aren't that high for the two 7-5 teams, but you could do a lot worse than this one.
This MAC-WAC matchup at 4:30 ET on ESPN gives you Toledo against Utah State. Before you scoff, recall that 10-2 Utah State is actually ranked above Nebraska by both the Coaches and AP. A victory over Georgia would probably enable the Huskers to leapfrog the Aggies, but if NU has any hope of holding onto a ranking in defeat then they probalby need teams like Utah St. to lose. Toledo's not expected to win the game even though they've got some nice offensive weapons at quarterback, running back and receiver that could give Utah State a challenge. The Aggies played good defense for most of the year but they could find they have their hands full with the Rockets.
Not your dream set of bowls, though for a cold mid-December Saturday not too bad either.
