Husker Up, Week 7 2009

It's Saturday morning. Game day. You've no doubt had your morning coffee or bagel or breakfast caserole by now. The early games are just getting ready to kick off. The cars are filling the tailgate lots and coolers are opening up. These are the halcyon days of college football. It's beautiful.

Well, guess what? You are getting complacent! Now is no time to be soft.

Listen up, Husker fan. Texas Tech is in town. Their quarterback throws it all over the yard. Their defense is simple but relentless. They have cut the hearts out of Husker fans in the last three meetings. The team needs to win this game. You need to help them. You have to do better. It's time to HUSKER UP.

No Complacency
Now is not the time to rest on our laurels. The Huskers beat Missouri. So what? They were supposed to beat Missouri. Their next game is right in front of them. What does Coach Pelini have to say on the subject?

"It's all about having that consistent approach and that's something that we always do. Our guys understand that. We're not talking about Missouri. Missouri is over. We put that to rest a long time ago and it's time to get into the next thing."

So, are you over Missouri now? You better be, because Coach says so.

The Face of the Enemy
You love you some Suh, don't ya? Sure, you do. Well, Texas Tech thinks they have a counter. His name is Brandon Carter, and he looks like this.

Freaky, isn't it? Well, he's not just a clown or a pro-wrestler wanna be. He's a legit pro prospect at offensive guard and is one of the best players Suh will face 1-on-1 this season. He's big, he smart, and he is the Tech leader. If you love Suh so much, then help him out. Be loud today. Make Carter and the rest of the offense know they are playing in Lincoln.

AV Club Says - We Owe 'Em
I'm pretty sure you are aware of this - but the Husker really owe the Raiders a whoopin. Last year's over time loss hurt. In 2005, the Huskers litterally had it IN THEIR HANDS, and lost. And, if you don't hold at least some hard feelings about 70-10 in 2004, then part of you might be a little dead inside.

I think the person who enjoyed that 70-10 game the most was, the guy ringing the bell.

Wow, he sure can ring that thing, can't he?

Cue the Band
Okay, enough scary linemen and funny videos. The Pride of All Nebraska presents "Hail Varsity"... let's hope we hear it a lot today.

Does Shawn Watson have a game plan ever?

Yes, Shawn Watson will take what the defense gives you. He doesn’t appear to be of the mindset to take what we want. We knew that these problems were present, but I just didn’t think we were THAT bad on offense.

There are so many things that I could comment on about today’s game I wouldn’t even know where to start. False starts, dropped balls, questionable play calling, lack of tight end play. I guess the North is still attainable.

This is getting old.  It’s the same things every week.

Penalties!  We get them to stop drives.  We get them to let the other teams keep drives going.  We get them for personal fouls.  And the refs seem to be calling these phantom penalties on us every week.  Personally, I truly believe that Bo’s antics with the refs last year and some this year are being taken out on the team.  Call me a conspiricy theorist, but damn we get more phantom/bad calls against us every game than any team I watch.

Offense!  I don’t think we know if we want to be a power running team or a passing team.  Zac runs when he should throw and throws when he should run.  We hardly run any misdirection plays.  The WR’s drop too many passes.  Zac throws too many bad passes.  Our run game is predictable.  I can’t say whether or not it is the play calling or is it the players.

Defense!  We keep giving up a few really, really bad plays that either keep drives going or they go for long yards.  The offense has too many 3 and outs, which puts the defense on the field too much.

Special Team!  We are terrible at fielding punts.  We give up too many yards on coverage.

Am I wrong?  It is the same show every game.  Please feel free to make me see the light.

cv you are seeing the same thing I’m seeing. Bottom line in my opinion, our offensive line is killing us. And if someone doesn’t step up on offense, it’s going to be a long second half of a season.
