Every Streak Has An End

Husker fans know all too well. Just because your team had 40 winning seasons in a row, doesn't guarantee the 41st. Thirty-five straight bowls won't get you a ticket to the 36th. You can beat Kansas thirty-seven straight times and it won't mean they lose thirty-eight. You can win every game in your home stadium for close to seven years and it won't buy you an eighth. So what does 31 straight non-conference wins do for Virginia Tech? Not a blessed thing.

Make no mistake, the Hokies have won that many games at home in a row for a reason. Just like the Huskers have lost so many games in a row to top 20 teams for a reason. Virginia Tech has been very good and Nebraska...hasn't. But Victor Harris, the star of last season's victory over Nebraska won't be playing Saturday. Neither will Joe Dailey. The game will be decided by the players these teams have this year. The only win that tells us anything might be Virginia Tech's win over Marshall. This year's team has shown they can play well at home and win big - against a non-BCS conference team.

It's been eight seasons since the Huskers put together a six game win streak. But it may as well be eighty in terms of how relevant it will be to the game on Saturday. Bo Pelini said it. This game will be decided by whichever team executes better. Tech may be the favorite. They deserve to be. But these streaks have nothing to do with who wins Saturday (except perhaps fo the degree that they played into the recruiting of each team's current players and that it draws fans to the stadium).

We'll either see some long streaks continue or come to an end this week in Blacksburg, but their bearing on the outcome of the game will be minimal.

Steve - will the Huskers execute better?

I wish I could say an unqualified yes.  I think the defense for Nebraska is probably better than it was a year ago, but I don’t know if it’s light years better.  The offense may be better too.  And Virginia Tech looks better than they did a year ago so Nebraska could execute better but have it end up looking worse simply because of the opponent.
