Coaches Provide Week One Details
Even after the closed practices this week, the coaches have still provided some information to the media about who may be able to see the field week one against Wyoming. The most interesting details provided so far is the list of true freshmen who might see the field.
Expect four true freshmen to play on the defense according to John Papuchis. Nathan Gerry, Josh Banderas, Kevin Maurice and Maliek Collins.— Sean Callahan (@Sean_Callahan) August 22, 2013
It seems as if DT Maurice has been under the radar up until now, but is impressing the coaches enough to likely see some playing time.
True frosh Kevin Maurice is in the mix to play DT this season, #Huskers coach John Papuchis said. Haven't heard much about Maurice til now.— Steven M. Sipple (@HuskerExtraSip) August 22, 2013
Papuchis on Maurice: "Kevin, I think, is a little ahead of even some of the more experienced guys in how he plays the run." #Huskers— Steven M. Sipple (@HuskerExtraSip) August 23, 2013
As for the rest of the line, there are still some battles going on.
At defensive end spots, Moss and Gregory battling for starting job on opposite side of Ankrah. Working behind Ankrah is McMullen. #Huskers— Brian Christopherson (@HuskerExtraBC) August 23, 2013
In the Linebacking corps, Rose is making strides to make some impact coming up, along with Banderas. But the clear talent is still David Santos.
Redshirt frosh weakside LB Michael Rose has made "a fairly significant jump, in my opinion, the last two weeks," Papuchis said. #Huskers— Steven M. Sipple (@HuskerExtraSip) August 23, 2013
Banderas obviously impressing at MIKE. Els likes the freshman very much. But also clear Santos still the guy in that room. #Huskers— Brian Christopherson (@HuskerExtraBC) August 22, 2013
On special teams, the only solids are Turner at Punt Returner and Folz at Punter. While there are still battles at Kicker and Kick Returner, it is a good problem to have with the talent that is currently on the roster.
ST: Els said K battle still close b/w Bondi/Smith. Maybe 1 barely ahead. Not saying who. Foltz at P, Turner edge at PR, host of guys at KR.— Samuel McKewon (@swmckewonOWH) August 23, 2013
Els also said special teams too important part of the game to not consider Ameer Abdullah in return game, especially as KR. #Huskers— Brian Christopherson (@HuskerExtraBC) August 22, 2013
