Nebraska's hopes for a big season and a highly-anticipated match up with USC nearly wilted under the heat of a North Carolina day and a very prepared Wake Forest football team. But, in the end, the Husker defense made enough plays to preserve a 20-17 victory for the Huskers.

It's Friday, and time to HUSKER UP for this coming week's game against Wake Forest. For this week, we bring you three things to get your Big Red blood pumping -- all of them related to what might happen on Saturday in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Why Nebraska Will Win Saturday 5 comments

I was enjoying a rare mid-week happy hour in honor of a retiring friend and ran into a Wake Forest enthusiast. Much like some of our visitors to this site, he had a lot of confidence that Wake would win. He bet me a beer that Nebraska wouldn't cover the touchdown they were favored by (I hadn't seen that the spread had grown to 9 points in favor of the Huskers). He kept saying he felt bad for me since I'd be driving away from Winston-Salem disappointed. I'm quite capable of pessimism about the Huskers (I confess I even picked Nevada to cover the spread last weekend), but this week I'm just not feeling it. There are a number of reasons:

The “Mo Effect” on Saturday 2 comments

Based on Wake Forest's statistics versus Boston College, it is fair to assume that Nebraska will have to take to the passing game much more than they did versus Nevada in order to win the game. Some may look at quarterback Sam Keller's line from last week (14-of-25 for 193 yards and a touchdown) and see an outing in need of improvement. I look at that line (and the game tape) and see a quarterback in need of some more help from his much ballyhooed receiving corps. Have no fear, big Mo Purify is likely to make his return to the lineup against Wake, and it will have an effect.

Sizing Up Wake Forest 11 comments

The Demon Deacons are not the biggest team in the country, but they've got some beef where it counts. Wake Forest has excelled at stopping the run both last season and in the 2007 opener. They have a 326-lbs. space-eater at noseguard and some good-sized defensive ends that go 264 and 274 lbs. At 274 lbs. their starting defensive tackle is a bit undersized, but as a fifth year senior he brings veteran savvy. Behind them are a number of options at middle and strongside linebacker that all go 240 lbs. or more. The weakside ‘backer is smaller at 225, but that's usually plenty at that position.

Expect More Sam Keller Versus Wake 8 comments

During Nebraska's decisive win over Nevada, NU quarterback Sam Keller appeared about as necessary as Matt Turman did running the show in 1994. That is, other than needing a guy to take a snap and hand the ball off, the Huskers didn't need much from Keller. But that would have been very different if the Huskers hadn't rushed for a nation-leading 413 yards against Nevada.

2007 Opponent Preview…Wake Forest 24 comments

wfu_06ACChampHELMs-s.jpg Predictions about Wake Forest for 2007 run the gamut from first place to last place in the ACC's Atlantic Division and every spot in between. Raw talent? Not there. But that was true a year ago when they won the ACC. The Demon Deacons pulled out a lot of close games to shock the nation. Can they do it again?
