Worst. Defense. Ever. And other observations… 33 comments
In the wake of NU's narrow victory over Ball State yesterday, my head is ringing with the sound of "Comic book guy" from the Simpson's. Say it with me...Worst. Defense. Ever. Okay okay, maybe not the worst in the history of football or Huskerdom, but certainly one of the worst I have witnessed in back-to-back weeks. It is one thing to get throttled by mighty USC. But, giving up 40 points and 610 yards to Ball State at home is just ridiculous. I spent most of my time last week seeking patience when it came to the "Blackshirts" and Kevin Cosgrove. This most recent performance won't do anything to silence people, and may have even soured me. If I can get past my ire for the defense for a moment, I have a couple other observations to offer.
Just a Bad Hangover for Nebraska? 0 comments
After the gut-punch that was the USC game a week ago, Husker fans hoped to see Nebraska dismantle Ball State on both sides of the ball and win in a blowout. The 21½ point spread in NU's favor meant that most of the betting public expected the same. Instead, the Huskers allowed the most yards to an opponent in 16 years, rushed for a meager 3.2 yards per carry and needed to cross their fingers as Ball State lined up for a 55-yard field goal attempt that would have won the game.

There's no better cure to an ailing rushing game than to face a small defense. That's what the Huskers will face on Saturday, a small defense. Only one player weighs in over 255 lbs. which should allow Nebraska's bigger offensive line to create holes at will. The Ball State secondary is also smallish (one cornerback is 5'7 and no defensive back is taller than 6 feet) so the Huskers should be able to lob passes to Maurice Purify and Todd Peterson all day.

Ball State will likely be the Huskers get well game after they face USC. The Cardinals have a fairly good passing offense and some decent linebackers. But on paper this looks like one of those games where the Huskers will run the ball 45+ times to spare their quarterback.
