Huskerpedia Down then Frozen

Comments 29 comments so far by

Thousands of Husker fans had a rude awakening today as they found Huskerpedia down. We don't have to tell most of our readers what Huskerpedia is, since a survey we did a few years back told us that most of you visit the site daily. The word is that an ownership issue put the future of the site in question. The main site has been restored, but it appears that the content on the main page may be frozen.

Plans are to lure fans to a new web address, but when you visit the new site you realize that it has new content not present on the old one. That would seem trivial except for the fact that the main Huskerpedia page doesn't (and likely won't) tell people about the newer site.

There are other ways to figure it out. For example, a visit to the bulletin board at the old site reveals how to find the alternate site. Still, you wonder how many of their daily visitors ever explored the ancillary pages. In effect, this could really change the habits of a bunch of Husker fans that hunger for their daily fix of what's new with NU football.

And habits mean a lot when it comes to web sites. We've pretty much built the Big Red Network on that premise. Provide new content daily and people will come back out of habit. And Huskerpedia was really the first of its kind in the 1990's. One of the first aggregators of links and one of the first bulletin boards. You wouldn't think just posting links, archiving history, and providing a forum (which became a paid one) would necessarily cause people to come back day after day, but that's exactly what happened. To where 300,000 unique visitors came to the site monthly.

But in some sense they'll have to rebuild. It's probably not unlike NBC's task of rebuilding the Tonight Show after a lot of habits were changed by the changing hosts and time slots. Can they remain what they'd been or will it mean their best days are behind them?

They can be thankful that the Huskers have a lot of buzz right now. We can see our visitor numbers rise and fall with the fortunes of the Big Red. You can only imagine it's the same over at the 'Pedia.

But enough about us and them. Tomorrow we go back to providing you original content about your favorite team and links to what's new in Nebraska football. And of course, you can leave comments to converse with other Husker fans.

****Update - New content's been added at the old site and the new one, but the two sites don't match each other. So now Huskerpedia is essentially in competition with itself!

Steve,

Good thoughts. No doubt this has to be tough on the folks over there. Give them credit for being the first to take Husker content on the 'net really seriously. They are the founders of the feast, I guess.

Maybe they will get things squared away. If not, migrating folks and changing habits can be hard. Regardless, fans can be sure that sites like BRN will work hard to fill that void.

Oh, and so folks know, nobody here at BRN is making that kind of coin (or any coin). I mean $1.5 M... wowza! That is a surprising, at least to me.

Doing this site is a labor of love. To lose it - money or not - would hurt. Gotta imagine the 'pedia folks are pretty upset right now.

Greg Morrow Mar 02 10

Glad, that the founders quickly set up a viable alternative, since I've clicked "pedia" for the last time. I mean, out of Irvine? "Shoot nah!"
(Since it's just us) I go to that site mostly for extra stories on recruits, on their recruit page. Plus, the quick access to past classes and rosters. It was a wonderful site, but most of the links that I hadn't already read were from the OWH, which I never go to, since I'm good with the "triad" of LJS, brn and the new pedia replacement.
If another school's team has a better, more informative fansite, I'd like to see it.
The old pedia was obviously lovingly put together.
Financial questions were raised?
Once again, my innocence has been stolen...

biff Mar 03 10

Have to say that the site founders were increasingly out of touch and remote, anyway. Perhaps it was just my personal experience, but I found Emails with them about membership to be curt and dismissive.

Pat Mar 03 10

So someone post a link to the new site.

Rally Cap Mar 03 10

I had the very same experience that Biff had when contacting pedia via email. Curt and dismissive are exactly correct.

What a strange turn of events. The Pedia has been a great resource for Husker fans for a long time. I hope both parties get this sorted out quickly.

Both sites are linking to this article now. So, welcome to the Huskerpedia readers who are discovering us for the first time.

We post new Husker football articles every day, have lots of Husker news links on our home page and a free weekly email to help you get your Husker fix.

Hope you'll hang around and give us a shot.

The same...but differant. this is ridiculous. I lived on pedia before it went to pay-to-play on the boards. The archives and a few of the old timer insiders on the BB are their best assets. The news links are a convenience but not something only they do these days. There are free sites out there, including this one, that provide the same services and offer the same rousing discussion on the BBs. Other than tradition of sorts, not a huge loss to Husker Nation.

jeff Mar 03 10

I can't say I'm shedding a tear for poor old "Big Red Max and his I own Nebraska and Pedia". I found the guy to be "curt and dismissive" on the few encounters I had with him and as some have said - they are a little out of touch.

Too bad.

From the ashes will rise something better. It's the nature of things. It's called innovation.

RIP HuskerPedia

GBHusker Mar 03 10

Max and Hudson built HuskerPedia into the best sight of it's type in the Nation. The Pedia thing is all about domain names and nothing to do with content. Go look at other college Pedia sites and you will see what I mean. You have to be a real fan, not a corporate label to do something as Unique as what HuskerPedia has been. Those who fallow college ball closely will see this immediately. That is why HuskerMax will do well in the HuskerNation.

I spent over 6 months on the unemployment line last year and had plenty of time to soak up all of the Husker sites. All have different strengthes and weaknesses but in concert, bring the entire Husker experience to us daily. Being back in the working class has forced me to budget my time a little more and I have found that BRN is one of the sites that I just cannot drop. The information is shared and defended as needed, links are provided to other great stories, and this site somehow manages to keep the "Your Team Sucks" crowd at bay 99% of the time. (Not pointing fingers at other sites.)

Keep up the great work!

GBR!

Bob

It's a shame to hear of the break-up, as I've met David Max and had a wonderful experience with him. As for the 'curt and dismissive' comments, that may be some folks' opinion and experience, but I've seen nonesuch treatment. David is a true Nebraska cheerleader, along with Hudson, and they are the heart of it all. I, for one, will be logging on to HuskerMax.com from this point forward. It is clear to me that Mr. Park is not a Husker in geography, nor spirit.

CBad Husker Mar 03 10

I found BRN on my i phone and it helps keep the Husker junkie side of me going. I have been a Pedia looker for years and WILL NOT "pay to play" on some BB site, no matter the topic for the simple reason that I could give a hoot about "chatting" with some boob (like myself) on line, and I am a near "old timer" with strong roots to NU with enough inside scoop to keep me informed and happy. Like most fans though, I will visit both sites, if both do a good job of informing us of all things Husker. B.R.N., my only suggestion would be to cover other sports as well (Ladies Hoops) but other than that keep up the good work! AND GBR!

Roy Mar 03 10

I was getting upset about the coverage of Husker Lady basketball they would take forever to update and the BB is abysmal...shame on them for the short shift they have giver to this historic team.

huskerfan Mar 03 10

The "curt and dismissive" comments sound like talking points to disparage the new Huskermax site. Wouldn't doubt that they are posted by the corporate people at Huskerpedia trying to keep everyone coming there.

Bryan Smith Mar 03 10

Too bad to hear about the troubles over at HP. The vast majority of the members of our site and message board, www.bighuskerfan.com, are current or former HP members. We certainly hope David and Joe can regain control of their hard work and in the meantime would welcome those looking for a replacement (even if only temporary) while the problems are worked out or they get their new site going to join us. We are 100% free site and have a very active message board which any Husker fan can enjoy.

Matt Mar 03 10

I would say HuskerBoard.com is a good alternative they keep up on news, their community not nearly as close-minded and their mods tend to not have an overly-developed God Complex.

Yeah, um, about BigHuskerFan...that's one of the few sites I would straight up avoid like the plague. Not exactly a good group of folks over there, that's for sure. I'm painting with a broad brush, but if the telltale sign of a poor site is not missing it when you do your daily run-through, well.

Having said all that, I like BigRedNetwork. They do a good job, and I ping them daily. They keep on top of events, their writers tend to do an excellent job (even if I personally disagree, they tend to at least have a valid point or three), and they listen to the folks that post here.

No hubris, no God Complex, no simpletons trying their hand at writing and requiring patrons to validate their bilge. Just good, simple, articles and viewpoints.

Kudos to BigRedNetwork.

Bryan Smith Mar 03 10

Matt,
Sorry to hear you must have, at sometime, had a run in with a current or former mod or administrator at our site. We certainly apologioze for that. But that happens on occasion and certainly is not exclusive to BHF. It happens everywhere there is a message board and more often then not involves a couple strong willed individuals.

BHF isn't a place where writers write the news. We link to news sites out there but anyone who writes at BHF does so as commentary. We don't have "on staff" writers whose job it is to report the news of the day. So hopefully you can forgive us giving people a platform to share their opinions.

And I am new to Big Red Network. I will certainly look here more when looking for Husker news and opinions. But for those looking for a message board, I was just saying there is a place if needed.

I respect your opinion about BHF but can tell you 100% of all our active members would disagree with it. Based on your statements, as I said, you obviously had a problem there at some point with someone. And for that I apologize. Would have been more than glad to try and help had I been given the chance.

Steve Mar 03 10

Wow, I haven't thought about BigHuskerFan.com in about six years & I had no idea that it was still around. Nice thread hijack.

BHF always was pretty good at scrounging through other bulletin boards and poaching posters. Not surprising to find them here posting oblique ads for its BBS.

HuskerTim in Omaha Sucks! Mar 03 10

Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later.

Bryan Smith Mar 03 10

I love it. What do we have to gain but more people to discuss Husker sports with? I have to chuckle at the comments.

We are a free site. We have no financial gain for anything in fact the owners operate at a loss each and every year since its inception. We don't sell anything and don't charge for anything..

If this is a bulletin board, ala message board, remove my posts because it didn't appear to me as such. In fact I looked for forums before replying to this story and didn't see any. The last thing I would do, cannot speak for others, is poach for posters. Thread hijack? Is this a thread or a story to which readers can post comments?

Again nothing to gain. You got it all wrong.

Mike McCann Mar 03 10

I will go where Max goes...it is a simple change if that is what needs to happen and I will e-mail every one in my 2,000 name e-mail database as soon as I know which way Max tells us to go...in the mean time, I have Huskermax right above Huskerpedia on my favorites menu and will stay tuned. I could care less which name it is...just that it exists and exists by those who developed it and run it...not CA bozo rip off artists.

Note to all who have any site hosted: Make sure you have it in a legally binding contract signed by both parties that you OWN ALL content, website name, copyright, etc. on your website...this is not the first time this has happened and won't be the last. m

TommyG Mar 04 10

Former Pedia poster.

Long time BHF fan, and occasional poster.

The criticism is unwarranted. There is a fan base there that discourages wanton nonsense and flaming. Some take it personal. I like the fact that they do better than most at keeping the talk about Dear Old NU. Keep up the great work Bryan. Everyone is welcome. It says so right on the page, check it out.

Back to the death of HP...

Todd Jess Mar 04 10

I am saddened to hear that people found the responses from Max to be "curt and dismissive". I have contacted him several times over the years, and found him to be very helpful. He located tickets to games for me on more than one occasion, and invited me to his tailgates (to which I never made it, sorry Max!). If his responses were "curt and dismissive", I am sure that he would say that he certainly never intended to be. I have always found Max to be of good spirit and willing to help.

Hsteve Mar 05 10

Its clear to me seeing the links that now posted at Huskerpedia. That the connection to Nebraska which we all enjoyed is no longer there!! It off to HuskerMax for me!

Matt Mar 05 10

Bryan, the cult of personality there is overwhelming, like the stench that emanates from Boulder during any given football season. Again, it's a broad brush, but it's justified. I haven't seen such an off-the-rails group, mods and posters alike, since the Redout.org schism a few years back, and at least Redout.org folks had a sense of humor.

Steve, to BHF's credit, I haven't seen them actively soliciting posters here or elsewhere. Doesn't mean it hasn't happened, but I can't second your statement.

And to get back on task, Colonel Mustard has officially throw his lot in with Max, et al, and requested his material be removed from Huskerpedia. For those that hang on his commentary (which are quite a few 'Husker fans), that is an event of significance in this debate.

brandon Mar 06 10

Seems to me this article is complete bs. I wrote husker Dan last year before going to my 1st husker game. He provided me with directions for restaurants, an invite to his tailgate party, and his cell phone number in case i needed anything or had any questions. I have nothing but respect for him and the huskerpedia family. To knock a website and its staff purely to promote yourself is idiotic if you are all really big red fans, then maybe work together if your upset, and if that won’t work don’t blame someone because they are a success. same team farva, same team!

Husker Elvis Mar 09 10

You have to be a real fan, not a corporate label to do something as Unique as what HuskerPedia has been thanks to Hudson and Max. Those who follow college ball closely will see this immediately if they visit the other major college sites owned by the "corporate" labels. That is why HuskerMax will do well in the HuskerNation. Husker Elvis goes with HuskerMax.

GBR, God bless the Husker Nation!!!

Jason Mar 16 10

After seeing countless posters defrauded by David Max because they didn't ascribe to his little group's version of events, it's fun to finally see some come-uppance served. Now that HP is under more competent management, it's also refreshing to see that the gaggle of psychopaths and internet stalkers that Max catered to are getting taken out with the trash.
