Defensive Star Search
In a way, Ndamukong Suh probably kept Nebraska from getting as much credit as they deserved as a defensive unit. That's not a slight towards anyone, he was just that dominant. Suh was Bob Dylan and the rest of the Blackshirts were The Band.
Of course The Band ended up making a pretty good name for themselves when they finally stepped out on their own and released Music from Big Pink in 1968, an album so good that, according to Wikipedia, it convinced Eric Clapton to quit Creem.
So as we stare out from Suh's shadow towards a new spring season the question is this: Which returning Blackshirt will step into a starring role and be so good that Mack Brown will quit football?
Here are some names, thoughts and entirely subjective "Odds of Stardom":
Jared Crick 3/1
The five sack game carries a lot of weight but the preseason publications will undoubtedly question how much Suh's departure will affect Crick. It might affect his numbers--Crick is Nebraska's returning leading tackler--but, as he no doubt learned this season, that only means more for someone else. That said, I think Crick will do enough disrupting to get himself noticed.
Prince Amukumara 3/1
The flood of NFL interest at the end of the season no doubt elevated Prince's college football Q Score. I'm trying hard not to think of the '03 secondary when I consider this year's crop, but Amukumara makes that hard. Could he be an All-American? Doesn't seem out of the question and that's good enough to make him a co-favorite.
Dejon Gomes 6/1
I've already given Gomes the "clutch" designation but we all know it's possible to be clutch without being a star. We've seen Gomes come up big in some big moments, and that's a good way to get notice quickly. Being a star, however, is being noticed all the time and I could see Gomes being a guy teams have to account for at all times.
Pierre Allen 10/1
Expecting big things out of Allen in 2010. If Crick proves himself a disruptive force early in the season, Allen's numbers should only rise later on.
Eric Martin 20/1
Tough to forecast a defensive performance out of a bunch of special teams play, but Martin obviously likes to run into things at a very high rate of speed, a valuable trait for a linebacker. Some people think Martin will take over starting linebacker duties next season and the thing I love about this guy is I know he thinks that.
Jason Ankrah 50/1
You can't have a field without one "come from the clouds" longshot so I'll nominate Ankrah sight unseen. Heard murmurs from the coaching staff that Ankrah was ready to play last year but this is more a reflection of my faith in Bros. Pelini and their magic touch with defensive linemen. Becoming a bona fide star in year one is a tall order but I think Ankrah could easily take the mantle of star in waiting after next season.

Um, Where's Alphonso Dennard? IMO, he's as good as Prince.

First, great take, Brandon. That is a good list of candidates for "the next level." I agree with your odds, with one exception.
But, I'm kind of with Saunders45...I would put Dennard on this list, probably ahead of Gomes. Yes, Gomes made some huge clutch plays. THat counts for a lot. But, as an every down cornerback - playing on the outside - Dennard was lights out. Some of his film from last season is just sick, the OU game in particular.
Prince is better at getting to the ball, and is great with the ball in his hands (hello, punt returns?), so he clearly gets the nod as the #1 guy back there. But the combo of Prince and Dennard is one reason I am so bullish on the NU D for 2010.
Oh, and I LIKE the odds at Ankra at 50-1...that is a very good bet, imo. I would take that payday any day.

I don't about the odds, but I liked what I saw from Cameron Meredith and Eric Hagg last season.

Yep Mack Brown just read this article and said he is quitting coaching. He is sooooooooo scared. LOL

I am already pumped for this season.
It's going to be awesome!

why are OU and NU pumped? Just another year of getting beat down by UT.

I'm on board with the Eric Martin pick as a potential defensive star of 2010. What one word was used to describe Suh all of last season that I've heard associated with this guy? Motor.

I say that Hagg should be added to this list. I do think that it should be pointed out that last year O'hanllan (sp) would have no way been on this list and was an All big 12 guy.

A little insight Colt. No one at Nebraska feels "beat down" by texas. If anyone does its the texas offense, colt specifically.

UT fans, thanks for dropping by.
Jimbo - it was a joke. Not familiar with metaphor or hyperbole, I guess.
Colt - thanks for the smack talk. One more reason I am looking forward to October 16th. If you see the other Colt, help him up off the ground, please.

um, err 13-12 ring a bell?
LOL
You can not handle Oct 16th... :)

I bet Colt's not even from Texas. For some reason that particular team attracts more bandwagoners than any other, contrarians who just like to talk smack to true fans who are loyal to the team from which they come from. I always wanna ask them who they go for in the Olympics or who they are rooting for in the Afghanistan war, because regional loyalty is something that is clearly lost on them. Also, noone does less with more, they get the best players in the country EVERY year and have ONE title in the last 40 years, absolutely adorable I just wanna pat they're little heads. Yep 13-12 and still no title.

Cameron Meredith looked strong as a Freshman at DE and showed some great things last year.

What a dominating 13-12 win that was indeed. With McCoy and Shipley their offense looked as bad as ours and it was practically a home game. Is it me or should the rest of the conference just quit according to Texas fans and just not even bother to show up anymore? Can it be that they will just win forever and ever and nobody will ever be able to do anything about it?
Good luck Oklahoma in The Red River Game. . .
