Lavonte David Intrigues

Any number of 2010 recruits could grow into a big-time playmaker for Nebraska. But one that jumps out is linebacker Lavonte David. In many respects, he reminds you of former Huskers and All-Big 12 linebacker Demorrio Williams. Both were ranked as top 10 junior college prospects, both are on the light side (David is listed at 215 lbs. just like Williams was in his final year at Nebraska), and both have the good fortune to play on a Pelini defense.
You'll recall that Williams, despite his size, was lined up at defensive end at times to be a speed rusher off the edge. In 2003, he totaled 21 tackles for losses (with 11 sacks) and another 13 quarterback hurries. He led the teams in solo tackles. He also forced two fumbles and blocked a kick. He also broke up 5 passes and picked another off. One reason that was so important, is that by lining Williams up as an end, the Huskers could create pressure without blitzing. That was the strength of the defense this past year and could be in the future if the Huskers find a player they can line up in the front four that could pressure the quarterback.
Looking at it another way though, David also is lean enough to run like a safety. That means he could play linebacker even in passing situations and allow you to cover receivers, tight ends, or running backs with a linebacker, without giving up a sure tackler in run support. That would be reminiscient of a Jamal Williams or Troy Dumas type player from the 1990's.
In any case, when Pelini lands a top defensive prospect, you can bet he'll be put to good use.

Steve, with Lavonte having 3 yrs to play 2 a redshirt year is almost a given, and I would be EXTREMELY surprised to see him take the field at all this year. Pelini's system has shown that for defenders a year of learning before being able to contribute at a high level is almost mandatory, especially at the LB position, and with Eric Martin having the year he there's really no need to waste that year of learning for David. Look for Martin to be used somewhat in the capacity your alluding to here, and don't forget that Sean Fisher with and his superior size and similiar speed will be very hard to keep off the field.
