The Weekly Buzz
Signing day's coming soon! Let's hope there's not any drama this year that hurts us. This is a small class, but there are some big prospects and in-state prospects that are being discussed all over right now. But Coach Bo Pelini is already thinking ahead, visiting juniors and getting a commitment for 2011. Tom Osborne is thinking ahead, getting the conference opener on Thursday night on EPSN. And you know us, we're thinking ahead too. We've already started looking at one of our non-conference opponents, and we've got a few more months to look at the rest of them.
Drama, drama, drama » The LJS recounts the history of the Huskers having problems holding on to some of its big time commits. At least he mentions how some of the good stories go, but something like that always makes me play the "What if?" game. Do you think that Blaine Gabbert, Josh Freeman, or the many other examples too numerous to name could be making an impact as Huskers right now?
Will drama continue this week? » We've been discussing this week why Nebraska needs to go after a QB in this class. It seems to be that every recruiting class for every team needs to try and pick up a quarterback that fits their system. The other thing that keeps us talking is making sure that the best in the state come to Nebraska. Bronson Marsh is going to pay his way the first semester at school just to come to Nebraska. These seem like things that should have been sorted out before this late in the recruiting season, but you have to remember that Bo is still sort of doing on-the-job training when it comes to recruiting. We know he's been a coordinator, but to be in charge of it all is a different game.
Getting a head start » Bo was doing some scouting in Florida this past week checking out the local talent. We all know of Nebraska's greatest Florida player, Tommie Frazier, but will one of the next great ones come from Florida, too? We know that one quarterback for 2011 will be coming from the state of Texas as Jamal Turner has indicated his commitment to Nebraska. It happened because of the rapport he's built up with Tim Beck.
Different team, same result » The Big 12 Conference kick off for Nebraska is now going to be televised on ESPN on Thursday night. Just like our conference kick off in 2009, I expect a win at Kansas State. It was this story that had my favorite quote of the week from Dr. Tom Osborne about playing on a Thursday night: "If you play well, it’s a good thing. If you don’t, it’s not a good thing. But we figure on playing well.’’
Good news for ticket holders » No price increase this year for season ticket holders, which includes students.

Well, it seems that Carnes is committed to Western Kentucky.
Some kids would rather have playing time guaranteed (though the coaching connection was most likely a factor) than compete. Joining possibly worst team in America over a possible contender says something about the kid's priorities. Nothing wrong with being honest with one's self, but I think the NU program currently has other things on the mind.
In summary, if winning championships wasn't of interest to Carnes, then Carnes isn't of much interest to NU.

"Luginbill said it would help if Nebraska would stabilize its quarterback situation, perhaps with a young quarterback (Cody Green? Taylor Martinez?) who would in turn help draw in additional skill players.
It starts snowballing," Luginbill said. "That's just the nature of the beast."
Nebraska's in the process of creating (it's own beast.)
One thing that can definitively be pointed out is-
“I think what’s happened is now we are without worry about what any pundit or so-called expert can say,” Carl Pelini says."
That's one of the most reassuring comments I've read, since the Bowl game.
That's Nebraska. Alway's been, always have to be. To be dictated by a scout service would be so..."un Nebraska."
Part of that, to me, are Coaches identifiying a player's "effort threshold." Guys might be at different levels performance wise, at 18. By 22, their potential talent ceilings can be a lot closer.
You've got a depth of guys truly developing, you don't need many snaps from the 18 year old.
Unless, of course, he's got breakaway quicks, like a Bobby Newcombe.
I get the impression this staff is searching out the sold out "grinders."
