Will Hawkins be Spared?

Apparently, Chris Fowler isn't the authority on who will or won't be coaching Colorado next year. Reports are now that Dan Hawkins will return in 2010, which is very much in line with the reports that the buyout is just too expensive for the Buffaloes. This rumor might give a big lift to the CU players, who had to be wondering about the future for them and their coach.

What does one year buy Hawkins and Colorado? Dan Hawkins could save his job. It might only take six or seven wins to do it. The coach also gets one more year with his son. Even if he feels recruiting him was a mistake, at least he gets to be around for that final chapter in his son's college career. And Cody Hawkins did start in wins over Oklahoma and Nebraska in 2007. He can do some things right. CU saves some money - which could better be spent upgrading facilities, eliminates any danger of a Cody Hawkins transfer (not that many Colorado fans would have minded), and can retain some of the recruits who have committed for 2010. They'd also retainf a guy who by all accounts has run a clean program after all of scandal they endured with Gary Barnett.

Keeping Hawkins will hurt season ticket sales. You don't generate excitement with a coach that's had four straight losing seasons. Fans will also get pretty vocal in their disapproval after Colorado's first loss next year. If money wasn't an issue, it would be hard to argue why Hawkins should stay.

But money matters in college football, which is why we shouldn't be surprised to see him back. Then again, it would only take one eager booster to buy him out. So stay tuned on this one. Nothing is certain.

The decision to retain Hawkins was made on Wednesday. He's staying. Colorado fans are not amused.

Ouch!

Assante being called out for being a habitual thug on national TV.

He'll need those 'skills' against Texas, they're no joke.

That's rough!
