Remember When...

The college football regular season has come to an end. In these few moments before the conference title game hype starts and the BCS debate gets going, I'd like to take a couple of minutes to wax nostalgic. College football is epic. For three months, fans ride huge highs and deep lows. But, it all comes out in the end. With such huge moments every week, it can be easy to forget some of the moments along the way. Sometimes it is just good to sit back with a cup of coffee and say "Remember when..."

National
Remember when...

- Lou Holtz said Notre Dame would play for a national title?

- Freshman quarterbacks Tate Forcier (Michigan) and Matt Barkley (USC) looked like Heisman hopefuls?

- Cincinnati was unranked in the preseason?

- Nobody was talking about TCU?

- Everybody was talking about "the U" (Miami) and Jacory Harris?

- Ole Miss thought they were a title contender?

- Boise State beat Oregon?

- Everyone thought Florida was the best team in America? Oh, wait, that one turned out pretty close to true.

Big 12
Remember when...

- Oklahoma was the #3 ranked team in the country?

- Dan Hawkins uttered the words "10 wins and no excuses"?

- Baylor was a scary team?

- Oklahoma State was in the top 5?

- Kansas was predicted many to be the Big 12 North champion, and was cruising along at 5-0?

- Jason Whitlock said that Blaine Gabbert was the next John Elway?

- Everyone pretty much thought Texas looked like the best team in the Big 12? Uh, yeah, that one looks true.

Nebraska
Remember when...

- Everyone was so worried that Shawn Watson would bolt of the Alabama offensive coordinator job last year, or that he would leave NU to be the coach at CU?

- Nebraska beat Missouri on the road and had huge momentum rolling in to two home games?

- Carl Pelini was hired and certain people were questioning his qualifications? Now, those same people are worrying about his taking a head coaching job...

- There were concerns Alex Henery taking over as NU's full-time punter?

- Phillip Dillard couldn't get on the field?

- Nebraska threw for more than 300 yards per game in two of its first four games?

- Most people agreed that Nebraska would win 9 games in the regular season and capture the North title? Sure, that one worked out okay. But... remember when most of us didn't think one of the losses would be to Iowa State and one of the wins would be against Oklahoma?

Those are the moments that kind of stick out to me nationally, in the conference and for NU this year. It's by no means a complete list. Please offer your recollections and moments this season, funny or otherwise. What do you think when you say "Remember when...?"

-When we had beat Virginia Tech with 2:00 left in the game? (okay that was painful)

-We thought all that was wrong with our offence would be fixed with putting in Green

-When beating Oklahoma, or the talk of playing USC in a bowl game would mean we were in the TOP 5.

-When the ranked teams we beat (or barely lost to) would actually stay ranked long enough to keep us credible.

-When winning the Big 12 North gave us a decent chance of winning the Big 12

-When all these things could still happen next year.. (oh wait, that one's true)

Im excited for the post season and next year!

-When our secondary was unproven and our O line looked to dominate?

-When we had the best RB pair in the north, maybe in the conference? (pre-season)

-When the spread option was going to carry us through to the Big 12 title game?

-When we thought we'd seen the last of the fabled fullback position?

-When Mangino was entrenched at KU and building trouble for NU, while MU was reloading instead of rebuilding?

-When there was no way we were going to be a top 10 defense?

-When we couldn't win close road games and home was always safe?

Go Big Red, bring on Bowl Madness!

-When no one thought Phillip Dillard would see the field his senior year.

-When some people questioned whether Alex Henry could be our field goal kicker AND make it as a punter.

-When some people thought that Matt O-Hanlon should not even be a starter (although it looks like he may even get a shot at the next level).

-When some people said Cody Green was the QB that would take us to the promised land (maybe he will in the future, but not this season).

-When our special teams didn't look so special.

-When coaches and players said that Jared Crick was looking good and was going to help complement Suh at DT....oh yeah, that's another one that was dead on.

-When nobody gave Nebraska a chance in hell to beat Texas, and this Husker team again somehow found away and now lit a match to the BCS system.

Oh..sorry, a week early for this reflection.

GO BIG RED!!!!!!!

Huskersouth--not too early by any stretch of the imagination. I personally feel Nebraska is a lot better than what the media wishes to give credit for, and that Texas isn't all that it's cracked up to be.

- When we gave up 10 touchdowns in ONE FREAGGIN GAME!!!

- When Colorado beat us and wore "The Real Blackshirts" T-shirts after giving up 51?

- When we spent whole games this year in a 10 spread offense?

- When we were worried if Burkhead was ready to play after losing Castille?

- When we were wondering how Barry Turner would recover from his broken leg?

- When some people questioned whether Dontrayveous Robinson was a good pick up by Coach Pelini?

- When all USC had to do was put on their uniforms and win the PAC-10 title?

- When Houston Nutt let Gus Malzahn loose and gave him complete control of the Arkansas offense?

- When people were wondering if Urban Meyer's spread option would work at Florida against SEC defenses?

Speaking of USC, SHAME on you Pete Carroll. What goes around comes around, perhaps it won't be soon, but ONE day you will be paid back for antics like that tenfold. . .

Remember when,

Teams ranked 80 out of 120 in strength of schedule didn't complain about not playing in the National Championship game. *Cough*Boise State*Cough* Seriously play someone or STFU!

Andy Nov 29 09

James,

Normally I'd agree with you on the Pete Carroll thing, but not this time. USC took a knee with 55 seconds left and a 14 point lead, and Neuheisel called timeout (his first...he may well have called his last 2 just to get the ball back with a few seconds left in a game he was losing by two scores). Carroll tried to be a good sport, and Neuheisel acted like a punk. He got what he deserved

Andy,

Very good point but I just don't know. I won't talk you out of your point because it's a good one and I didn't consider it from that perspective. After all if the other side won't tap out, well I suppose so. That just looked bad. BUT it was that TD that covered the spread. I'm just sayin, it DID cover the spread. . .

Dwayne Nov 30 09

Andy,
I can't comment until I see that entire last drive. It looks bad, but if UCLA is using time-outs then I'd reconsider. The celebrating on the sideline was a bit over the top on the side of USC true. I'd even need to consider that point spread point that James made. And honestly I could care less either way so I have no pony in this race...
