Husker Up, Week 6
I have not filed a "Husker Up" post in a few weeks, partly due to laziness on my part, partly due to the lack of necessity. (Everyone was pretty fired up for the Virginia Tech game as well as the 300th sell out). But, I feel the need to post one today. Why, isn't everyone enormously fired up about the Missouri game tonight already? Well, sure they are. That's why this edition of Husker Up is not designed to stoke more emotion from Husker fans, but rather to temper their wills, steel their emotions, and prep them for a big night of football. Gird yourselves. It's not rah rah time. It's go time. Husker Up!
Don't Be Provoked
For those of you who spend much time online, it's been a long week, hasn't it? The amount of noise being made by the luminaries at the Missourah blog, the Tiger Board, and of course, dear AJ is just unreal.
It takes quite a bit of restraint to not be provoked in to engaging those folks. Trust me, there are a lot of things I would like to say to those folks about their program and their way of, uh, supporting that program. They can really get your blood pumping. But I won't.
Instead we all need to take our cues from the Husker team. Be serious. Handle your business. Cheer for Nebraska, loudly and proudly. It's going to get even harder to endure that MU noise in the next few hours, and even more so after the game. Regardless of the outcome, keep it classy. Don't get provoked. Please be bigger than that.
The Wisdom of Tombstone
Anyone else live their lives based partially on the awesome wisdom of movie quotes? I do. I actually feel bad for my wife or friends sometimes, when I try to have whole conversations using movie quotes. So, somebody asked me about the NU-MU game this morning, and this gem spilled out...
"No, make no mistake. It's not revenge he's after. It's a reckoning."
For those who don't know, that is Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday in the movie "Tombstone". And, that's exactly how I feel about this game.
I don't want revenge, and neither should you. Revenge is emotional, messy and the sign of a dark heart. This is business - a reckoning, a settling of accounts. Mizzou's bill is past due. And, it's time to collect.
Now, the Huskers must set their mind to that business and not stop until it's done.
Picture of the Day: Facing Suh
Much of the speculation leading up to this game has centered on Blaine Gabbert and Nebraska's defensive line.
In my opinion, that boils down to one central image.

That's the face of Suh. The face of the Nebraska defense in 2009. He is resolved. At what point do you think Gabbert will feel like the Reaper is scouting him?
AV Club Wants You Good and Mad
This is normally the part of the post where I offer up some Husker highlights as motivation. Big Red hits and touchdowns, that sort of thing. But, not this week. This week you get to feast on ugliness.
Here is nearly 8 minutes of brutality from the 2008 Nebraska-Missouri game. This happened. This is real. Don't bury your head in the sand and act like everything is okay. This is not okay. It ends tonight.
So What does Grant Have to Say About All This?
Now, in case you haven't worked up enough, I offer some sentiment from Missouri native Grant Wistrom and a few of his close friends.
Do they have your attention? Good.
Cue the Band
The Pride of All Nebraska presents "Hail Varsity"...
Play it. Blare it. But don't stand up at your desk and clap along. Don't smile and goof around. Sit there, surely and steadily, even angrily, and soak in the sound that comes after Nebraska scores. Now picture it. Picture the victory.
Okay now, let's get to it.

Nebraska football is the one thing I can consistently look forward to being a disappointment, year in and year out. A constant lack of fortitude in any sort of meaningful game will be what the Huskers will be known for post-Osborne.

Warbird? A little premature yes? Great win for the Huskers.

Warbird - thanks for dropping by. Uh, I think the Huskers showed some forditude tonight.
Suh was 100% as advertised. Many other players deserve credit too.
This is what it is to have a team led by the defense, and in it's own football-centric way, it is gorgeous.
Nebraska has guts. Missouri has an injured QB, and some suddenly silent gas bag fans.

Just read this to day. Very foreshadowing. Couldn't have been more dead-on about SUH! Love the Tombstone quote! I too am a movie quoter. Sometimes, it's just best to use other people's words.

Don't be provoked is right. I was watching this game on an out of town vacation enduring the multitude of text messages from Missouri fans without responding to a single one (I live in Missouri, so I know a lot of MU "fans"). At the end of the game, I let my silence speak volumes.
