Husker Fans Get Their Wish

You asked for it, you got it. A true freshman was your starting quarterback and the result - one offensive touchdown. Add in the touchdown he provided Baylor and you net out at zero. That's not to say he didn't do some good things. But asking a freshman to make his first start on the road in a conference game, is asking an awful lot.

Give credit to the Husker defense and special teams. They helped put Nebraska in the lead and kept the Big Red in the game. They got turnovers. But you can't ask them to do everything every week.

You take any win you can get in the Big 12, no matter how ugly. But aside from turnovers, the offense looked no better today than it did a week ago. It was probably worse, in fact. The passing game was anemic and that choked the running game.

This isn't the kind of performance you need against Oklahoma. You have to run your whole offense against a team as good as the Sooners. But at least the Huskers stay alive in their division. This Halloween would have been a lot more frightening if they hadn't.

We've heard how Bo was going to be putting his stamp on the offense, but more must be done. This O has NO swagger at all. We need guys flying around, hopping up and down, getting jacked and taking charge.

Green is young and made plenty of rookie mistakes, but man, he was good at staying cool and keeping poise. It was one of the uglier wins in recent memory, but I just thank the heavens that it was a win at all.

Green didn't look great but he needs to get experience, and I'd rather have him doing it now......while the defense can still carry him. It was also nice to see a Husker QB with the ability to make plays with his legs, it's been awhile.

The play calling was absolutely horrendous in the 2nd half and not very good in the 1st either. Give Green credit, because with those plays being called, I doubt if Tommie Frazier would have done any better. If you're told to steer your car into the ditch, it really doesn't matter who's driving it at that point. The end result is the same.

Green did well for a freshman starting in his first game. He did demonstrate that he will tuck the ball and run when he has to, and I didn't see any of that ruffed grouse mating ritual arm-flapping in the backfield that we'd been seeing out of Lee. Half the time I thought he was going to take off. He needs to work on his accuracy, but I'll write that off to being the first game as a starter.

Did I mention how awful the play-calling was? What's with the option left out of the shotgun in the waning minute when you're killing the clock? WTF? Then when the Power I is working we leave it and start throwing out of the shotgun on 1st down. You have to just LOVE all the calls for the screen as well. Yep, Watson is excellent in every area.

Worse than the week before? I always knew 2 turnovers were worse than 8.

We will take the win and build off this one. Even with this mistakes, Green played well for his first start. The offense will need the reps to find their rhythem with Green. Do we have any freshman O-line guys who want to play? That line looks clueless out there.

Paul,

Couldn't agree with you more. Watson's play calling leaves much to be desired. Green's obviously a good runner and yet Watson was asking him to throw way too much, especially at the beginning of the 2nd half. If Watson would play to these guy's strengths our offense would be a lot better. Doesn't help that all of our good backs must have been hurt by the 4th quarter. We have 3 good backs and less than 1 healthy one between the 3 of them.

Mr. Jared Crick you played one heck of a game. Congratulations and keep working hard. You have quite a future ahead of you. . .

Hey Paul,

There was some poor execution in there as well. I'm not going to blame it on the play calling just yet. I doubt if you would, but if you watch the game again you'll see some missed assignments that could make a huge difference. It's a nice win, but if these guys don't execute better they should be prepared for a .500 finish this year.

A win is a win but I was hoping for more. I don't think Green is the answer to the problems. There was no spark provided by his presence that I could see. He isn't a liability either if he can keep the turnovers down, but in game 1 he didn't demonstrate that either.

I have a feeling the Oklahoma 'D' is going to be licking their chops. I'm not real worried about winning next week. I'm worried about scoring. OU will have to play really bad and we'll have to play our best game of the season to squeak out a win.

I think the second half was too conservative. Terrible at eating clock. As far as Huskers running the ball...absolutely terrible. 2nd and 1 & 3rd and 1, and not converting. They seemed determined not to let Cody Green run it. Did Robinson get hurt in the second half? The ones that comes in after him are like JV running backs.

Green 6-12 and an INT in the second half.
Hopefully, Dennard isn't out too long. West should stay on the pine. Hagg sucks in coverage, if he's not blitzing he's nothing.

Hopefully, Watson comes with some schemes to spread the linebackers out.

Agree about the conservative plays in the second half--again, our playcalling went away from what was working (I-Formation, Student Body Left/Right) back to going West Coast. It's almost as if Watson is purposely being stubborn about forcing the issue on the WCO.

As for the offensive line, the left side looked pretty good, and the right side was where the little boy with the finger in the dyke got washed away by a flood. I'm of the mind that we should burn redshirts to shore up that side of the line, or we're going to be staying home for the holidays--something a VERY young offense does not need...

Robinson looked good at RB--dare I say, almost as effective as Rex. Imagine what next year could be like if we had Helu, Rex, and Robinson all healthy...that right there would be the best RB combination in the Big XII, bar none.

Green looked more than serviceable in his first start at QB, but that's it. Part of the problem was playcalling in the second half (didn't look like we made too many positive adjustments @ halftime...), part of it was spotty O-Line play, and part of it was Green getting his feet.

If you notice, I didn't throw the receivers under the bus...that's because they actually looked better than last week, despite the lack of activity. Paul may be emerging as our veteran leader for that group, and not a moment too soon. Cooper looked promising and should get a start next week against the dreaded and feared OU.

All in all, we did improve over last week. We put kids in that, once they have a few more starts, will become playmakers. Sometimes you have to take one step back to take a giant leap forward...

I dont know how you can be so hard on green. True freshman that hasnt played more then 20 minutes all year on the road gets a win in his first start. We might not have even one with lee at the helm. Greens future is much brighter then lees. Green has also already showed more leadership qualities then lee. I think watson is a big reason why the offense is sucking...whatever happened to throwing the ball over the middle? Tight ends are non-existent in this offense. very predictable...very easy to stop us. The Defense is finally awesome and i think with green getting more reps he will start to relax and play some pretty good football. Look for him to have a good last half of the season especially since next week vs the sooners should be a learneing experience. Go big red
