Nebraska Continues Sun Belt Dominance

The Huskers wasted little time in putting distance between themselves and the Red Wolves. NU needed just eight plays to go eighty yards and take a 7-0 lead. Nebraska's defense held after a 12-play drive by Arkansas State put them in NU territory. Then it was another eighty-yard drive by the Huskers that put them out in front 14-0. A three and out by ASU ended the opening quarter. Just four plays later Nebraska stretched the lead to 21-0 and the game was all over but the final score.

The Huskers may have let up a bit in the second quarter. NU safety Larry Asante forced a fumble to end an ASU drive into Nebraska territory. A holding penalty erased a long touchdown by Niles Paul and doomed the Huskers next drive. A short field and fourth down gamble gave the Red Wolves six points to close the gap to 21-6 late in the second quarter, but a long time-consuming drive by NU made it 24-6 at the half.

Nebraska opened the second half with a defensive stand and a four-play sixty-seven yard drive to make it 31-6. The Huskers ended a long ASU drive with the corner blitz but the NU offense stalled at midfield after squandering a second and one situation. Another stop the Blackshirts gave Nebraska the ball back to grind out the third quarter.

After missing a long field goal attempt, the Blackshirts surrendered a one to make the score 31-9. The Huskers answered with a touchdown to make it 38-9 which ended the scoring on the day.

Once again there will be plenty for Bo Pelini to find fault with. The Blackshirts allowed a lot of big runs by Arkansas State. While the Huskers committed fewer penalties in this game, they were painful ones. The NU rushing game was rather pedestrian. If not for the extremely efficient performance by Zac Lee, the game would have been much closer. The Huskers forced only a single turnover. But the Huskers also showed improvement in some areas. They allowed fewer total yards and fewer first downs. They finally got some sacks. They also didn't have any turnovers.

It wasn't the ideal outing, but it wasn't half bad either. While teams like Colorado, Oklahoma, and Iowa State have taken losses, Nebraska is 2-0 heading into the biggest non-conference game of the season.

The final numbers weren't bad, but the big gains on the ground worry me a bit.

Color me concerned for next Saturday.

I have a feeling that Nebraska and Oklahoma will both be 2-1.

Nice 29 point win against the 'Red wolves'.

Nebraska Continues Sun Belt Dominance
Steve, it's a tough job, but somebody's gotta do it.

Got to hear a lot of new names again. But again, not until the game was well decided.
When the game was still close, the Corn took control, then gave up some balloon yards.
I'm a little concerned about the middle, but I didn't watch it, so I don't know what to attribute it, to. They did seem to have a pretty good back.

This week, I think Bo & Co. will pump up the team somewhat, yet be real clear where the deficiencies are. Or, they'll privately chew their butts off, challenging their fledgling manhood, I don't know.

It did sound like Zac Lee has the type of command of the offense and chemistry with it's components, that might reach a new level, this year. I haven't seen his stats, but it sounded like a really smooth 300 yards or so, with a nice completion rate. That'll improve even more. I don't necessarily mean better stats than Ganz, but maybe better yards (like when you need them).
If the defense improves just a little...

I was at the game...once again it seemed our guys took too long to get set on D...doesn't seem to be encouraging considering the no-huddle offenses we haven't seen yet. McNeill is becoming Lee's favorite target. ASU's RB was pretty solid, he earned most of those yards against 6 or 7 man fronts.

All told, we need to hold opp. better on 3rd, and stop dropping open passes (and ints). Otherwise, B/B+.

I would have liked to see them bring in Ward earlier in the 3rd qtr for the short yardage situations. He looks like a big body that could run over people. The offense looked sharp most of the day, but could have put up more points if not for dropped passes and inopportune penalties.
The defense not holding containment is a big concern. The VT QB burned us last year when he was able to get lose. I'm sure that'll be a focal point for Carl this week. Better push by the D line although they look almost hesitant when going after the QB. I think the enforcement of that roughing penalty is holding them back just a bit.
GBR!

I don't know what it is with Turner but that dude better "turn" it on soon or he's going to be riding the pine. I mean I hate singling individual players out but I am so disappointed in his first two games at this point. He's not holding contain and he's hesitating on the ball. Suh needs to get on Turner's you know what. UG! I can't be the only one that thinks this?

Brandon Sep 12 09

Dwayne,

Tom Shatel agrees with you. Below is what he wrote on his halftime blog.

"5. Barry Turner is not the same guy, not even close. He's hesitant, lost a step. Too bad."

Austin Sep 13 09

Good win overall.

Few thoughts:

1. O-line is good... they can do so many different things in the run and passing game.

2. Zac Lee had a great day... something like 77% completion percentage - I think it was the best % in the NCAA this week.

3. Niles Paul is a beast... can't wait to see more of him.

4. The tight ends is where NU sets itself apart from all the teams.

5. Linebackers youth showed... inconsistent, sloppy tackling... this is a major concern going to VT next week.

7.To Dawyne: the coaches say that Barry Turner is his old self and I believe them... just give him some time... remember last season, our D-line didn't start picking it up until halfway through the season.

8. Glad to see penalties are down.

Overall, A-. Good game. GO BIG RED!

Ryan Sep 13 09

Didn't see the game but seemed like we had control throughout. Offense came out firing andgot on them early which is exactly what we needed to do. The defense is coming along but need to be more consistent for us to take the next step from good team to a team that can challenge the elite of the nation. Bo knows 'D' so i trust that he has them on the right track just need the fine tuning adjusted. Hopefully that can happen next week. The containment issues could be a concern considering what Taylor did to us last year and will definitely be stressed in practice this week. As far as Turner goes he is a 5th year senior, not a freshmen, so there is no need to wait until half the season is over before he decides to get in the game. If he isn't the same player anymore (which sucks) move over for the next guy (Meredith) to have his chance to shine. We will definitely find out what our 'skers are made of next week in Blacksburg. Can't wait! GBR!

Dwayne Sep 13 09

Turner has two old selves. Right now, the Turner I see is timid and lacks a motor. I hope that I'm dead wrong because I like the guy a lot and this defense needs him to step up big. The defensive line is "supposed" to be our strength of the team and right now I can't fully say that because of what I believe to be his lack of play. Reference the play where he gets the turnover and watch that exclusively. Players that play like this, God forbid, end up getting hurt. Ryan's correct, he's a 5th year senior on scholarship. Enough said?

Sweet D Sep 13 09

From what I remember last year, I thought we contained (Tyrod) him well for most of the game, until the second half, when VT needed a big play. I just couldn't believe he beat us with his arm in the first half.
We couldn't do anything on offense...then we got momentum and did OK. Do we have enough speed at the receiver position to keep their DBs honest.
Tackling at first contact has got to get better. It kills us last year.

I saw that Bama/VT at least twice on TV. I just can't see why can't pull off the upsetand win big. Kunalic has to boot all kickoffs out the endzone. Their return game looked good the first two games.

What did Bowling Green do to slow Mizzou offense for most of the game?

Bill in Iowa Sep 13 09

Turner made some good plays where he did contain and some bad plays...just like the rest of the defensive front seven. It certainly is unfair to single him out, because I thought the entire front 7 played very average. I have to say I am very worried that V Tech is going to run all over our front seven. - PLEASE PROVE ME WRONG!

I thought our young LB's looked a step slow to react. I think they may be worried about making a mistake and thinking too much. At other times, they were overly aggressive and flew by the ball carrier or didn't break down, wrap up and make a sound tackle. Many times they were prevented from scraping and filling because our d-line were a couple yards down field getting in the LB's way.

The d-line is playing high and they are not getting underneath the o-line, standing the o-line up and controlling the line of scrimmage in a way I would expect the top d-line in the Big 12 to do against ASU. That makes it hard for LB's and DB's to do their job in run support.

I think our DB's look very solid and fast, but they haven't really been tested too much. I have to agree with Bo, that this defense is still very much a work in progress. I guess we will find out how good they are next week, but I am expecting the offense to carry the load.

Mister Mike Sep 13 09

Yielding 18 plays of 8+ yards or more (majority of them runs) to a middle of the pack/lower Sun Belt team that won't win more than 6 or 7 games this year is unacceptable.

It shows that our LB's aren't shedding blocks, aren't taking correct angles, aren't being physical enough. Yes they're young, but to say it's concerning would be an understatement. Our DL...we just got flat out beat most times in the trenches yesterday. Hardly any push up front. Mind you this is with an Arkansas St OL that had a whopping 19 starts TOTAL. We had 1 sack from our DL yesterday (Crick and Suh)

I hope Bo's got a plan for VT cause we will be f*&^ing ABUSED by VT in the run game next week if we play like this. Outside of TT suddenly getting his foot cut off in a freak lawn mower accident, I mean.

If I were VT's OC, I'd be salivating once I got a hold of our game film.

On offense...spread 'em out and throw the ball so that it opens some holes for our run game. We're not going to be able to go power on power with VT.
