Everybody Likes Throwback Uniforms, I Guess

We interrupt the anticipation of Nebraska's game with Virginia Tech for just one moment to bring you coverage of something entirely different - throwback uniforms. Yes, by now you have likely heard that NU will wear throwback uniforms to commemorate it's 300th sellout in two weeks. Did you know another school in the conference was also donning some commemorative game gear? Let's check it out!

Colorado is the other Big 12 school throwing it back this season. But, they are doing so for different reasons than NU, and marketing the uniforms just a bit differently. Here is a quick comparison:

NEBRASKA

COLORADO

So, one uses strong, talented, recognizable players who are candidates for awards. The other uses skinny, headless and lifeless facsimiles of actual football players. Possibly an apt metaphor for the conditions at both programs, I suppose.

Why Are We Doing This?
Also, let's examine why the two schools are choosing to wear these uniforms and, of course, offer them for sale to fans.

At Nebraska, they are celebrating their 300th consecutive sellout (an ongoing NCAA record) and paying homage to the era of a great former coach, Bob Devaney, whose team wore such uniforms styles when the streak began.

At Colorado, they offered these reasons. So, uh, they had two guys who led the nation in rushing in the 1930s and it is the 150th anniversary for the city in which they play? Not the school, the city. Yeah, that's not obscure at all. It totally makes sense.

It wouldn't be that an athletic department desperate for money and craving more fan support is hawking tickets and new gear at its fans by prostituting its players (and field?) with a nice game of dress up. Nah, never.

LOL.... Wow that is hilarious. Can the be any more pathetic. It's really sad that this is what any school in the Big 12 is reduced too. I doubt even Baylor at there worst and Kansas State at there worst, did something so rediculous.

Great article.

"Single Game Tickets On Sale Now" for Buff fans.

Just an FYI for fellow unigeeks:

Texas will play retro dress up against A&M this year.

hey do what you gotta do to sell tickets. I personally like throwback uniforms no matter what team adorns them. I just think it would be cooler if the cowboys wore throwbacks too.

What a joke. The once proud program of Nebraska is now reduced to publicity stunts like this. We used to win championships, and now we are reduced to moral victories over a mediocre VT team and hoping not to get blown out (again) at Missouri. Missouri! They have a better program than we do now.

Makes me sick to my stomach!

Huh? Uh, seriously, what are you talking about? This isn't a pub stunt - the retro NU uniforms commemorate something important. That was kind of the whole point of this post. CU's *aren't* commemorative of, well, very much at all.

And, plenty of programs do this. For example, OU worn commemorative throwback uniforms in 2003 (to match Bud Wilkinson's teams from the 1950s). So, I am really, really not getting your point.

Hmm...going from your mentions of Missouri and the number of Missouri "trolls" that have been popping up on BRN lately, I can't help but wonder if maybe (just maybe) you might really be a tiger loyalist. No? You sure?

huskfusker Sep 24 09

Ugghhh. I can assure you that is not the case. Methssouri makes me sick, as does the state of this program, as does the droves of fans that are willing to accept this plite.

Sorry if you or others don't like the truth, but Missouri has handed us our arses two years in a row. Once at homecoming for crying out loud. Yeah, downcycle...blah, blah, blah. If we don't start to take this seriously and hold people accountable this downcycle is going to turn into the norm. In case you haven't noticed by this years recruiting...kids aren't exactly beating down our doors to come play for the Big Red.

I only mentioned Missouri, to show the downtrodden nature of our program. Admit it or not...RIGHT NOW, they have a better football program than NU does. Let me type that again. Missouri, currently, has a better football program than Nebraska! It's freaking Missouri!

Sickening!

Huskfusker, hmmm...

Yeah, sorry, this link from the oh-so-fine folks at the always classy Tigerboard --
http://www.tigerboard.com/boards/missouri-tigers.php?message=6904147 -- kind of has me skeptical.

It shows up today, and then you just happen to find a story written more than a week ago, and come in talking about how MU has handed NU its "arse", taking a veiled shot an NU recruiting, and asking me to "ADMIT IT" about their program being better than NU.

Uh huh...yeah, I didn't just fall off the truck.

Maybe you are a 'sker fan. If so, you might want to Husker Up a bit. But, frankly, I doubt you are.

None of it will matter after Nebraska crams it down the kittens' pie hole to open conference play. Yeah? Yeah? Are you with me...

GBR! Right buddy?

huskfusker Sep 24 09

Yeah. I'm with you. Hope you are right, but the facts remain after the game we played against a mediocre VT I'm skeptical.

Color me crazy, but I'd like us to earn our respect on the field. Instead we have idiots pounding their chests all over the internet claiming moral victories. Never would have happened in my day. We used to win championships, now we claim co division championships with the team that beat us by 50 points. GBR! We have been the ones getting it "crammed down our pie hole" lately. I'll be the first one to start yapping when we actually win something, until then, you'll get the truth from me.

Oh, and the shot at the recruiting wasn't veiled. It is what it is, quite discouraging.

And as for being classy, well, that's another thing about this young generation of fans. They wouldn't know class if it bit them in the face! There is a post on Huskerboard about breaking Gabbert's neck. Oozing class!

And, just found out about this site today. Lots of sunshine pumping!

HuskFusker, come on. Bill Callahan set us back damn near a decade.Bo already has this team playing with a fire and passion we havent seen in nearly a decade as well. Our future looks great with kids like Green and Burkhead. There are no moral victories, I agree 100%. But they had some fellas by the name of Chase Daniel and Jeremy Maclin at Missoui. Missouri had a better team previously, but to say they have a better program is ridiculous. No TRUE Husker fan would even make the comments your attempting to make. Yes, we were THE program for a lot of years, but it is truely a cycle. By the way, VT just crushed #9 Miami today. VT has a good team, but were just better.
