Who’s on the Recruiting Radar?

Keeston Terry's choice to play at Kansas rather than Nebraska has brought the Husker recruiting effort back in to focus. Of course, one thing that always come to mind is “who’s next”? Recently, BRN’s Brandon Vogel raised some interesting issues with regard to recruiting. Louisiana wide receiver Curtis Carter was one player on NU’s radar, but it seems worth mentioning just a few more.

California tight end/athlete Harold Mobley is said to be high on Nebraska and is expected to take an official visit to Lincoln on November 7, when the Huskers host the Sooners. He has offers from Colorado, Nevada, and UNLV in addition to Nebraska. A good student, Mobley plans to study architectural engineering. A three-star prospect according to both Scout.com and Rivals.com, Mobley did it all for his high school team as he caught six touchdowns, threw a pair, ran for one, and also had a sack on defense. At 6’4” and 228 lbs. he could presumably be a tight end or defensive end, but might also have the versatility to be receiver or linebacker. He kind of reminds you of Pierre Allen as a prospect (only maybe a bit faster).

Illinois quarterback/wide receiver/athlete Detchauz Wray is said to be high on Nebraska but also had been high on Arizona. The Huskers are said to be in control as of mid-July. Wray is 5’11” and 175 lbs. and reportedly holds offers from Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, and Kansas. He’s a three-star prospect according to both Scout.com and Rivals.com. Another good student, he’s been a dual-threat quarterback in high school, throwing for 2500 yards and 38 touchdowns as a junior with just five interceptions to go with another five rushing touchdowns and an 18.6 yard per carry average. He may seek to remain at quarterback in college. Though with his speed could be a standout receiver or defensive back.

Jason Dann, a kicking and punting prospect out of Texas, has already said he will walk on and could be the next Alex Henery.

Beyond players with high interest, there seem to be a number of in-state prospects that could either earn late offers or contribute as walk-ons. A number of them have gotten division I scholarship offers or earned two-star ratings from Rivals.com. Bryce Dietz is a two-star offensive tackle with offers from Ohio and North Dakota. Jesse Hinz similarly is a two-star offensive guard with offers from Ohio, North Dakota, and North Dakota State who took an unofficial visit to Lincoln back in April. Tyler Evans is a two-star safety/athlete from Waverly who holds an offer from Ohio and camped at Nebraska. Quarterback Bronson Marsh of Millard South is a two-star prospect that camped at Nebraska. Running back Anterias Daniels of Omaha Northwest is another two-star prospect who camped at Nebraska. Christian Dudzick is a two-star athlete/running back from Omaha Skutt Catholic. Stephon Washington of Omaha Burke is a two-star running back. Jordan Tyrance is a big two-star wide receiver from Lincoln Southwest. Austin Kaczor is a two-star tight end from Ewing that might lean to basketball at the next level. He’s 6’4”. Ron Coleman is a two-star defensive tackle/middle linebacker prospect from Omaha North that camped at Nebraska. Zach Lempka is a two-star defensive end from Sterling Nebraska.

If Nebraska gets its share of these in-state prospects as walk-ons, they can build a nice “class behind the class” to be future Dreu Youngs, Mike Caputos, Todd Petersons, Tyler Wortmans, Colton Koehlers, Matthew Mays, Matt O’Hanlons, Lance Thorells, and Alex Henerys.

But stay tuned, this stuff changes daily.

Harold Mobley would be a nice pick up. For the star watchers, I believe the rumers are that he is close to getting a 4th Star. Good player regardless, would hope to close on him. Also would like to get DE Chance Carter, competing with ND for him. Will be interesting to see if they get some of these DT prospects like Wheeler to commit soon. Curtis Carter is still the biggest prize right now though, kid can play.

Well it seems that we've got quite a bit of people sitting on the fence waiting to see how this year turns out. I'd like to see more than 4 commits at this point (who knows if any of these remaining 4 will change their minds --Rodriguez might take additional visits, Sloan too) and that number worries me a little, but we have a lot of time ahead of us so let's see what happens. What kind of class we end up with could well hinge on the trips to Blacksburg & Columbia (important because they are the 2 time North winners who have put it on us these past two meetings & also to remind them that yes, you are a flash in the pan), and with Boomer Sooner coming into Lincoln we will be on a national stage there as well. The days of the meltdown in big games has to end this year. If it does, then the case that we are just a few players away resonates with prospective recruits and what you ultimately sell is not the program but the chance to be on the next big thing. Everyone wants to be a part of that. . .

Are our facilities a hard sell? What about the tradition? Coaching staff? University and it's extended support system? Enthusiastic fan base? The ONLY thing we have to sell is WHEN we will have the order restored. Might not be the wait that some expect. Can't keep US asleep forever. Not this machine. Not Nebraska football. We're not going to suffer from a "Lost Decade" like Oklahoma did in the 1990's. . .
