Huskers Gain Cornerback Commitment

Spring usually provides some very good on-the-field football news. Today, it provided some good off-the-field news for Nebraska as well. The Huskers secured a verbal commitment from Anterio Sloan, a highly rated cornerback prospect out of Arkansas. Sloan becomes the second unofficial member of NU's 2010 recruiting class, joining offensive lineman Andrew Rodriquez. Together, these two prospects give NU some decent recruiting momentum as they head toward the annual Red-White game.

Sloan is highly regarded by the recruiting services. He is rated as a 4-star prospect and is a member of the Rivals 250 list.He is not the biggest player in the world, listed at 5'9'' and just 165 pounds. But, he's very explosive. And good things can come in small packages. NU's all-time leader in blocked kicks - cornerback Baron Miles - was about that size.

Sloan had interest from many schools around the country, and offers from five of them, most notably Texas A&M. I'm pleased that NU could zero in on a prospect early and secure a commitment. And, any time NU beats a school from within the Big 12 for a player, it is an added bonus.

The diminutive Sloan joins a player who is likely to be the biggest in NU's 2010 class - Andrew Rodriguez. The 6'6'' Rodriquez is an offensive line prospect out of Aurora NE (via New York). He is also a 4-star prospect and is a member of the Rivals 100 listing.

Nebraska doesn't recruit as far ahead as Texas and some other schools. But combined, Rodriquez and Sloan give the Huskers a very good early start on their next class. Demonstrating this kind of momentum to players, parents and coaches prior to the annual Red-White game on April 18 might help turn some of those expected visitors into more verbal commitments.

Going in to year two of the Pelini era, I sense that the coaching staff is really hitting their stride, in terms of player development, teaching techniques and recruiting. I have a feeling this year the team is going to look downright nasty on the field and I suspect the recruiting will take another big leap forward as well.

I sense that the coaches are more organized and also have put their stamp on what Husker football is going to look like, both offensively and defensively on the field. Recruits, just like fans, when they start seeing results on the field, they are going to want to play for Big Red once again. I remember that when NU played an aggressive style of Defense that we all know Pelini wants to play, that that really went over well, w/ fans and recruits.

Bill in Iowa is exactly right and I would not change anything he wrote, especially the first paragraph. I loved this quote: "I have a feeling this year the team is going to look downright nasty on the field and I suspect the recruiting will take another big leap forward as well." Agreed, nothing like excellent coaches, a team with growing confidence, supplemented by stability and a chip on their shoulder. . .

I have the very real impression of a program gaining the confidence, and the ability to breakout on to the big stage. I really like the way I feel about these guys right now. . .

Who are we kidding? I love NU as much as any transplant can even went as far as tattooing myself about 10 years ago with the Husker "N"! But slow down folks! We faithful must exercise true patience. Remember the QB? If that position remains in the question mark state it is currently, it will be a long season. Show love, show up and make noise but above all remember it is only the 2nd season of what will be (and I know it will, can you feel it?) a return to prominence. Back to the days where the Blackshirts 3 and outted folks like their scholarships depended on it, back to a time when the fullback actually carried the rock! Anyone aware that a fullback, at Nebraska mind you, has not had a handoff in 4 years!!! But most importantly back to a time when the entire program was respected as all class, top to bottom, A.D. to walk on punter. If you look, I repeatedly said time. by that I mean even if The Huskers win 10 games this year the nation will still cry foul because the schedule is, well lets be honest, nothing that is going to wake the BCS voters. It is however ripe for a solid bowl run. In order to be fully backing NU must start to win regularly, win on the road and win on national TV. Something that has embarrassed us several times except the recent bowl game. I dont wat to hear about the Tech game. NU played thier ever loving hearts out that game and got nothing from the national media. And NU must consitently beat Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Colorado and Oklahoma St. then and only then are we back. This will take 3 full seasons to be back. But know this and believe it deep in your big red hearts we will be back!!! Go BIG RED!!!

Oh and by the way can we show Coach Pelini some respect? Stop calling him Bo like you are an old Pennsylvania class mate. He is the man we all know it but I don’t really recall anyone talking about Dr. Tom the same way. He works his but off, is fun as hell to watch, will run a clean, efficient, powerhouse program and thus deserves his due respect. If we as fans don’t show respect who will? Just a suggestion but remember the name is Coach Pelini. Way to recruit Coach!!!
