Cupid is a Husker Fan

Alas, a guy’s favorite holiday will be here tomorrow. Valentine’s Day. Yippee. I’m a huge fan of spending 50 bones on flowers that will wilt in 5 days, candy that really doesn’t taste that great, and balloons. It is obvious that this “holiday was created for women by women. That is fine. I will give my bride-to-be all the stereotypical gifts of love on Saturday.

But it got me thinking about my love for the Huskers and the long-term relationship we have been through.

The Huskers and I have been through everything together. It is true love. I got past the puppy love stage right about the time I could walk and it has blossomed into a marriage that will last forever. In any relationship you have to have some give and take. I give money for tickets and pay-per-view and I take the pride of a Husker victory to work on a Monday morning.

We’ve been in a few verbal spats before, most recently spurned on by a fellow named Bill. He interrupted our relationship. He tempted my love by trying to take her down to the pits. Fortunately we were guided to a marriage counselor by the name of Bo who has us building that relationship back to where it needs to be. It is a step by step process he says. Things won’t go great every day, but in the end, what brought us together is what will get us through until the end.

We still live in the same house. It is located on 10th street. It has undergone some remodeling over the years but still takes on its original appearance and mystique. I’d hate to see us have to move but I don’t think that will happen anytime soon.

Our kids go on to be very successful. 260 of them have become Academic All-Americans. Some go on to athletic careers, others join corporate America.

We’ve won family of the year five times, in 1970, 1971, 1994, 1995, and 1997.

Our grandfather, Tom, is a living legend.

Our great-grandfather, Bob, worked his whole life to make this all happen.

It was love that was meant to be. Through the good times and bad, Husker football and myself will always stay together. Turns out our favorite color is red…

I guess Cupid is a Husker fan after all.

Renny, can you link us to your preseason video. Your Aaron Neville song would be appropriate for the holiday.

I have a little tear in my eye...

You're marriage sounds very much like mine.

Nice, got a big kick out of that.

I read the whole thing looking for a George reference or NRA but alas none to be found.

Keep up the good work.

Nice post, Renny. Happy Friday thoughts.

It makes me think...when did Cupid's arrow first really strike me? I'd have to say 1983 is a the root of my football memory. I remember pretending to be the players on that team when we played during recess.

The heart break of the 4-TD 4th Quarter by CU really cemented my commitment too. I was entering adolecence, and realizing my champions could fail. Somehow, I cared more.

The mid-1990s were my "salad days" of my football marriage. I was in college, in Lincoln, for 3 titles. I mean, how easy and fun is that??

When was it true love for you, fellow fans?

While playing touch football on Ryons Street in the 70s, Cupid (Lyle Bremser) shot his Big Red arrow through my heart.

My best friend had the portrait of Taggee lunging the ball over the Goal Line against LSU hung in his home as a reminder of the love.

Mrs. bnahusker became my wife the day the Big Red won in Auburn, AL. (Guys don't get to pick wedding days, so don't start with me!) Even though it was a game day, the marriage has lasted 26+ years. The two greatest loves of my life are forever in my heart.

The family has grown over the years and while we have lost many members to the next dimension, I can't think of anyone that left by choice.

The Power of Red!

Forever

When my wife and I decided to get married, and we knew we wanted to pick a date in September, the first question she asked me was "When is there a bye week?" We wanted to be able to watch every game of our alma mater. Ah, true love.

My family moved to Nebraska in '89 when I was in 3rd grade. By the beginning of the '92 season I was really into Husker football, but I specifically remember the loss at Washington. My family made homemade pizza that day, and I cried when Nebraska lost. I guess that's the moment I knew I was a Husker.

With my dad born and raised a Husker fan, I was too. So I guess it was more of an arranged marriage, but I'm not complaining. I remember fondly the 3 national championships, but the loss to Jake "the Snake" and Arizona State really was the loss that shook me at the time and I realized how much Nebraska football meant to me.

Also, the longer I live outside of Nebraska, the more it means for me to root for Nebraska.

This topic is way too 'touchy-feely' and dull. I'm going back down and reread the posts on the hostile "Sour Grapes" topic.

Sounds like you should give all your Valentine's gifts to Big Red...L'il Red...Herbie Husker..? Wive's may come and go, but Husker FB abides...
