Gator Bowl Best Place for Huskers and Fans
This article's title could have been called “Why I Love the Gator Bowl. Once the Colorado game was complete, this was the best possible place that Nebraska could have ended up. From its effect on other teams, to it's television location, this is a great position for the Huskers to be in. At the beginning of the year, most media and people thought we would end up more like Kansas, playing against a team with four straight losses, on a channel that not everyone picks up, in a time slot when most people are far from thinking about football.
Instead, we are playing a solid match up when we're probably the best game on (head to head with Georgia v. Michigan State on ABC). The Huskers are also on right before a couple of the biggest bowl games of the year (Rose Bowl, followed by the Orange Bowl). People are going to be settling in for a full day of football.
If you look at the other Big 12 schools in bowl games, you will see that we've got probably the third best time slot:
| Bowl | Teams | Location | Time | Channel |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Valero Alamo | Missouri vs. Northwestern | San Antonio Alamodome | Dec. 29, 8 p.m. | ESPN |
| Pacific Life Holiday | Oklahoma State vs. Oregon | San Diego Qualcomm Stadium | Dec. 30, 8 p.m. | ESPN |
| Insight | Kansas vs. Minnesota | Tempe, Ariz. Sun Devil Stadium | Dec. 31, 5:30 p.m. | NFL Network |
| Konica Minolta Gator | Clemson vs. Nebraska | Jacksonville, Fla. Jacksonville Municipal | Jan. 1, 2009, 1 p.m. | CBS |
| AT&T Cotton | Ole Miss vs. Texas Tech | Dallas Cotton Bowl | Jan. 2, 2009, 2 p.m. | FOX |
| Tostitos Fiesta | Ohio State vs. Texas | Glendale, Ariz. U of Phoenix Stadium | Jan. 5, 2009, 8 p.m. | FOX |
| FedEx BCS National Championship | Florida vs. Oklahoma | Miami Dolphin Stadium | Jan. 8, 2009, 8 p.m. | FOX |
Some would argue that Texas Tech has the third best, but if you're like me and many other people, you have to actually go back to work on the Friday after New Year's Day, which makes it difficult to watch football (unless you take a late, long lunch break).
Next to the nice time slot, I also enjoy how angry this bowl has made other teams and their fans. First of all, it means that Notre Dame was “snubbed because they lost to a toothless Syracuse team, whose coach had just been fired. All the Irish had to do was stop that team on one play, but they couldn't. Everyone knew they weren't going to beat USC, so a bowl of the Gator's caliber doesn't pick a 6-6 team. In fact, by picking Clemson, they have picked their only five loss team in history.
By selecting Clemson, it angers a large subset of Florida State fans who also feel snubbed that their team wasn't picked over the Tigers. It's kind of nice not to even have to play the Seminoles (who are 8-4) and make them mad. I'd be upset too. Missouri should also feel a little jealous of Nebraska playing in the New Year. They beat us head to head and have a better record (for now) and got stuck with a Northwestern team that everyone around here I talk to thinks they're going to stomp (remember, I do live around Kansas City, Missouri – more to come on this match in the coming weeks).
The final selections did come down to ticket sales, local retail, and hotel reservations in Jacksonville. The bowl committee wanted to keep the area happy. Clemson and Nebraska had the most promising numbers for ticket sales and their traveling fans to spur the local economies. Normally, this type of thing used to upset me, but bowls are in it to make money, plain and simple (I don't begrudge them during the tough economic times, either). Until bowl games are thrown out in favor of a playoff system, there is no reason to complain. The Husker's nomadic fans speak to bowls with the one thing that is louder than the roar of the Memorial Stadium, their wallets.

Its interesting to think how all of us crazy Nebraska fans really do help the team more than we realize. In recruiting, many times recruits favor Nebraska because of the atmosphere on Saturdays. And we get picked for a better bowl, just because they know we fans will come and make the journey. So, lets pat ourselves on the back for this one.

Bill in Iowa..........
Kudos for the pat on the back! Nebraska is in its 3rd, 4th or 5th generation of backing our beloved Cornhuskers nationally. It is actually easier for me, living in Missouri, to have access to a bowl game than to see Big Red in Lincoln. (Thanks to my sweet mother-in-law!)
See ya in Jacksonville!

I think it's great how ticked the FSU fans are, and how they keep griping about how Clemson doesn't deserve to be in the Gator Bowl. They're right - of course Clemson doesn't deserve the Gator Bowl (or wouldn't, if the Gator Bowl meant anything, anyway). But, like Bill in Iowa mentioned, it is interesting how Clemson gets favored because of our crazy traveling fans.
Anyway, having "earned" the Gator or not, we're a different team now than we were in the first miserable half of the season - hope you Cornhusker guys don't feel put out by "only" getting Clemson... we're gonna make it worth the drive/flight for ya.
I've enjoyed your message boards, you guys have a great fan base, and I look forward to meeting some of you in Jacksonville.
Go Tigers!

Hey Joe,
I wouldn't put the "Only" tag on Clemson this year. Of course the Tigers improved in the second half of the season but, this bowl is at least a tier or two better than most of us expected for NU this year.
I hear that Clemson is excpecting to sell 18-20,000 tickets. If so, we should have a great crowd on Gameday. Look for me. I'll be the big balding guy in my "Blackshirts" Pullover, along with my wonderful wife and her mother. Hope to meet you, and more Orange clad fans like you.

Rex Burkhead is now a verbally committed HUSKER... with Tray and Burkhead, Nebraska looks like it has got a good backfield coming in again.. Some project Burkhead as a reciever but he looks to be a good running back.. best case scenario Robinson becomes a Stud back and Burkhead jumps into a tough reciever role.... either way both backs are tough and athletic it looks pretty promising... hopefully one of these guys end up as the next be NU back in the NFL.. After 4-5 years that is...

I've got to say that I'm looking forward to this match up. It's intriguing in a way we've not seen in a while. Two teams with little in common other than that they play with lots of heart and emotion and earned their way to a tier above what was expected of them about a month and a half ago.

I'm a little disappointed with the matchup, but I love the fact that the Huskers are heading to Florida. Already bought my tickets and will be there to cheer on the team. I have a prediction: Nebraska Cornhusker 56 Clemson Tigers 3 (with 4 missed Field Goal and one blocked).

I like the matchup, and believe we will see a 7 point spread at the end of the game. Clemson should not be taken lightly.
