When it rains, it pours

It took 57 yards but the Husker football team had plenty to be thankful for after Friday's victory over Colorado at Memorial Stadium. The good news didn't stop there. After a wild weekend in college football, the Huskers continue to build momentum even when the games are all done.

8-4 Regular Season

If you had told me that we'd be 8-4 at the beginning of the year, I would have gladly signed the agreement. Putting on the hindsight glasses, the Huskers were just a few plays away from 10-2. But it is what it is and we head into bowl season 8-4 and just outside of the Top 25 rankings. I am extremely satisfied with that result. But still that 20/20 hindsight vision wishes for a couple of games back this year...

Share of Big 12 North Title

This is certainly up for debate but if I were Bo Pelini, I'd be telling every recruit that in just our first year, we shared the Big 12 North Title. And if you look at the records, you'll notice that in fact Missouri is 5-3 in Big 12 conference games and the Huskers are also 5-3. And it doesn't take Differential Equations to know that those two records are equal. If you ask a Missouri fan, they'll tell you they are the only champion of the north by virtue of tiebreaker. But I am not one to care what they think anyways. Thanks for sending Darren the Chase Daniel lovefest Viewfinder toy. That will make a nice recycled gift this holiday season.

Recruiting Studs

With today's news that the Huskers got a commitment from December graduate Kevin Young of Olathe (North) High School, the Huskers continue the steam heading into the contact period where coaches can visit prospects at their home or school in person. Rumor has it that Pelini and Co. will be making the rounds this week including an all important visit to the home of Rex Burkehead of Plano, TX. Something tells me we are going to LOVE this class at the end of the year. Stay tuned for that...

The list could go on but I will stop for now. The fact of the matter is that Bo Pelini is doing some fantastic things in his honeymoon year at Nebraska. And as our friends at Morton's always say, "When it rains, it pours!"

That is a forecast I'll be glad to deliver.

I agree an 8-4 regular season, isn't quite what we would have liked 10 years ago, but it was a major improvement from the past few years. We need to give credit when credits due, The players have played their arses off , and that has a lot to with the confidence that Pelini and his staff have infused in this team.... More importantly than the wins, was the character this team showed.. We got beat bad by both Missou and Oklahoma and rebounded by almost beating Texas Tech ( REASON WHY TEXAS ISNT PLAYING FOR A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP) and finishing off the season with 4 straight.. The guys also kept playing in those games, and didn't give up, thats the key, they have fight in them...

On the recruiting side, it looks like Pelini and company are really in the hunt for some more Defensive lineman... Sounds like the staff will be out in Maryland this week going after the 3 D lineman from the area on the radar, as well as going to some other big recruit areas. Not to mention look at the number of DT;s/ DE that we have offered.. One thing I would like to see is add a tall WR or Two.. and the more LB we can bring in the better, but Im going to guess Pelini n company have a better idea on what we need then we do.. After all they've been turning all sorts of people into workable LB's// Im already happy with class we have, cause it looks like were going after guys that like to hit, and be physical, and more importantly have never ending motors... Hats off to Pelini and his coaches.. and GL for those wishing to get into the headcoaching ranks (although there loses will hurt).. I just hope that Husker Nation isn't out looking for a National championship already next year, cause as great of a team as we have have and Im looking forward to having, people need to give these guys a chance more than anything

Another news item is that Wyoming is set to name Dave Christensen as head coach according to and espn. This means that for the time being we will keep Gilmore. This could be crucial if Watson is able to get a head coaching gig.

I think what is most disappointing is that we didn't really beat someone that we weren't supposed to this year. Yes, 8-4 is better than 5-7 but there were some games that we let slip away.

My Bo "success-o-meter" reads "excellent". It's NOT just the 8-4 record, or did he win the games he was supposed to, it's about direction, defensive improvement, game management, player management, recruiting, and team morale.

What if at the beginning of the year we were told, the last two games of the season we would not have Dillard or Glenn play a snap? What about losing our best rush end the first game of the season? Bo really shuffled around defensive players like a deck of cards to field the best unit he possibly could. And players stepped up and played their hearts out.

Bo also had to manage several discipline issues that had him making very tough calls. Kicking Dixon off the team, sitting Glenn indefinately, that really hurt us defensively, but Bo stuck to his guns, discipline comes first.

How about the embarassing losses that did not break the morale of this team? Players level of excitement for this team is so high. That tells me that inside the program, morale is high. That goes a long long ways. With this excitement, Bo will be pulling in very good recruits, players enjoy playing for Bo.

In the final analysis I have to ask is this team better than when we started this year? Yes, definately. We may not be the caliber of Oklahoma or Flroida yet...but I think we can give most top 20 teams all they can handle.

Bill, my sentiments exactly, before we start worrying about beating people you shouldn't, you need to beat the people you should and the others will come sooner or later.

I will take what we've accomplished in a heart beat!
