Saturday Afternoon Thoughts Before the Virginia Tech Game

Jason and I and a few other folks are holding down some tables at Brewsky's in Lincoln. It's a dang fine location, if I say so myself. We're watching some possible upsets in the making, chatting up Husker and Hokie fans, and generally enjoying an afternoon in the epicenter of Husker Nation. As we move closer to mid afternoon, here are my impressions, observations and thoughts about the game. These may be the most coherent things I write today, so enjoy.

1 - We talked to Husker color commentator Adrian Fiala and he said the first quarter will be the key because the Hokies have not scored in the first quarter this year. So...something to consider.

2 - LOTS of Hokie fans in the house. There is a lot of maroon and orange in the building. And I saw quite a few of them on the road driving in. They are traveling well, it appears. And, Husker fans know that when a team travels well...they expect to go see a win. You don't cross the Mississippi to come watch a loss, right? We'll see.

3 - On the flip side, I overheard a table of Hokie fans plotting their escape route... "In case we're getting blown out in the second half, meet back here."

4 - The band just marched through Brewsky's, playing the fight song. NICE. GO BIG RED!!!

5 - This is my big thought about the game - don't subscribe to the prevailing school of thought. That is, everyone (including myself) is considering this a hard fought, low scoring, down to the wire ball game. That's because everyone is think in a Hokie frame of mind. That is how Virginia Tech wins and plays games. I reject that, and I suspect the Nebraska coaches reject that. If this is tight and down to the wire, it favors Virginia Tech.

As the home team with the more explosive offense, Nebraska needs to be the one to jump out first. I suspect Shawn Watson may try to use motion or some new plays to catch VT off guard and score early. In the same vein, look of for Bo Pelini to be aggressive early, try to confuse Tyrod Taylor and take advantage of an electric crowd early in the game.

No doubt, Virginia Tech came to play. And they WILL respond. But, for NU playing with a faster and more assertive pace is the key to victory.

GO BIG RED!

Looks like you guys are having a great time at Brewskys! Wish I could be in Lincoln to join you. But of course, we'll be live blogging for those of us not fortunate to join in the festivities.

GO BIG RED

I think it will be a higher scoring game than most people think. Over 20 for both teams, easily. Tip a long neck for me BRN.

I know you guys don't get out to Lincoln much so I'll try to make it there next go round. Have a great time and GO BIG RED

Nebraska blows Sep 27 08

Guess your thought was wrong. One thing you forgot to mention was Tyrod Taylor. Made your D look like some chumps. Also, high powered offense my ass. Only scored when Bud Foster decided to play it safe. This game shouldve been a blowout by VT but Tyrod missed a couple of crucial passes. Better luck next time!!!

Apologize for blows Sep 28 08

I apologize for this guy. Seems we have our share of fair weather fans that like to show up to gloat after a win. Great game! Greatest fans! Good luck NU!
