Nebraska Nets 10th Recruit for 2009

Nebraska picked up its 10th verbal commitment for the 2009 recruiting class yesterday. According to the Tallahassee Democrat, defensive back DeAndre Byrd intends to become a Husker. Byrd becomes the first Floridian to be a part of NU's 2009 class.

There are several reasons for fans to be excited about Byrd's commitment. The 5'10'' 170 pound defensive back is rated as a 3-star prospect by Rivals.com. He had scholarship offers from Arkansas, Auburn and South Carolina out of the SEC, Michigan State from the Big 10, and Kansas State and Colorado from the Big 12. Keeping a quality player away from a conference opponents is always a good thing.

Interestingly, Bo Pelini's reputation and success at LSU appears to have played a direct role in Byrd choosing NU. Much was made of Pelini's limited experience as a recruiter when he signed on as NU's head coach. Though now, it appears his big reputation for defense is paying dividends.

Most college football fans agree that the state of Florida has a lot of football talent to choose from. And, it is one where NU has not had a lot of recent recruiting success. Byrd plays his high school football for Lincoln High in Tallahassee, a tradition-rich school in the heart of Florida State Seminole territory. Pulling a kid out of there is rare, and important, for the Husker's 2009 class.

This is awesome! I also read that one of the first things he is going to do is work on some of his buddies down there and tell them how much he loves Nebraska and Pelini. It would sure be nice to get a couple of guys from Tallahassee Lincoln and Florida

This is could end up being BIG. Tallahassee Lincoln is a football factory with a lot of talented football players coming through there every year. Nice to establish a presence in Florida too. Beating out Arkansas, Auburn, South Carolina, Michigan State, Colorado and Kansas State is an added bonus. Haven't seen film yet but I'll check it out and post some additional commentary. Important that this guy and LaTravis Washington do well up here. Playing time, comfortable relationships with coaches and players, and of course some wins could be the start of a Husker presence in the Sunshine State. If you don't think that there's enough to go around down there, look at South Florida. Like Texas, Florida is a goldmine too. . .

Holy smokes the season is ALMOST here!!!

GO BIG RED!!!

"It seems to be an incremental process and I think efforts with results will also turn up in Florida and other parts of Dixie."

I mean, I hate to brag...

He's not a Florida player through the JC route, either!
As to his 3 *'s, assuming (hoping) he follows through, the important part is getting guys like him away from teams Nebraska has to consistently defeat. Meaning, every year. Nebraska's house, their house, neutral house, whatever. You look at his list of offers, that's what you see. That's how they'll win the North and legitimately compete with the south.

With guys like this, each year, thats part of how Nebraska used to do it and can do it.

Husker Bob,

Yeah he does play a lot bigger than 5'-10" and what I liked the most was that he was making catches with his eyes. Good athlete with body control too. Great get for us, 3 stars or not. He'll be a good player for us. I'm still a big Robinson fan though. Bodtmann could be an excellent LB for us too. This class is starting to look good, and getting some momentum to it. The coaching staff is pitching energy and excitement and it seems that this message is starting to be very receptive to our prospective recruits. . .

Great pickup for Bo. Of course it's a no brainer to pick a class team over CU .

If Nebraska is recuiting heavily in TX and Nebrska wants to return to the power run, How is it possible that U of Minnesota recruits 2 4* RB's from TX? Just a little nervous that Gophers can outrecruit Nebrsaka for Texas RB.s. Thoughts?

Do you realize that there are over 300 recruits each year from the state of Texas that are good enough to end up at division 1 teams? There are 2-3 star recruits that would be considered 4 stars if they played in South Dakota or some other state with not that many division 1 level players. You've got to evaluate guys that will fit in your system. I think someone at BRN is going to be expanding upon these thoughts next week.
