The Weekly Buzz
Editor's Note: The Weekly Buzz is a new regular feature that will highlight the top stories of the week from around the web. If you only read one post a week, make it this one and you'll have your bases covered.
The buzz this week: Nebrasketball recruiting, football recruiting, Virginia Tech and Zac Taylor.
» The top story this week was Doc Sadler's efforts to pick up high profile recruits with great potential. Eshaunte "Bear" Jones from Indiana will likely be playing for Nebraska in 2008-2009 and Vander Joaquim has already committed for the 2009-2010 season. The young guys that Sadler is able to get on the team always look like future stars. Next year could be a breakout year in terms of talk around the basketball team. Could we see a bubble team?
» Tyler Sellers from McCook, NE unfortunately picks Kansas, but as a DE. I would have liked to see him play for the Huskers in 2009, but the talk about him being a little small for a Defensive End is accurate. You have to get guys that work in your system.
» The legal surroundings of Josh Williams appear to be cleared up, even if character issues are not. I don't have a problem with him playing for us as long as there is not a pattern of destructive behavior. This young man should be on a short leash right from the start. Pelini has already said that he's a "good kid" but he will have a magnifying glass on him in Lincoln.
» The Virginia Tech game is looking brighter and brighter each day. I still don't think we are in any way favored to win this game, but it at least looks like the Huskers have a good shot. I would still trade a loss here for a win against Mizzou any day of the week.
» On a side note, it seems like the fascination with Zac Taylor will continue for a long time. It's nice to know what former players are up to, but I can't wait to see him eventually come back and be a part of a Husker staff any time in the future, a la Turner Gill. It's obvious that he has quite the football mind. Let's hope for the best for him as long as he doesn't play against his alma mater.

I took this from SundayMorningQB and it is the PERFECT assessment of what Virginia Tech faces for this upcoming season. Bear in mind that the DEFENSE is what makes Virginia Tech a year-in-year-out top 15 team:
"Four-year starter Vince Hall is gone. Three-year starter Chris Ellis is gone. Three-year starter Xavier Adibi is gone. Three-year starter Carlton Powell is gone. Two-year starter Brandon Flowers is gone, a year early. Two-year starter Barry Booker is gone. Two-year starter D.J. Parker is gone. That’s six of the starting front seven, seven of the top ten tacklers the last two years, almost 200 career starts, a dozen All-Conference selections and a couple All-Americans leaving en masse. Four of those guys (Flowers, Adibi, Ellis and Powell) were drafted in the first five rounds in April; two of those who weren’t (Booker and Hall) were all-ACC, anyway. The core of the units that have been so strong is thoroughly depleted, and Foster’s touch was not exclusively golden before they arrived: in 2002 and 2003, the last years in the Big East, Tech was middle of the pack defensively, and really suffered in ‘03, when it allowed 30 points in four of the last five games (all losses)."
They're just not going to be able to reload THAT easily. Not even USC, Ohio State, Georgia, or LSU can take these kind of losses and sustain the same level of quality play. I really like our offensive line, Ganz, and our depth at IB this game. I truly believe that we can get out on this bunch early and rattle some of these new starters experiencing their first true road test as starters. I'll take our 9th ranked offense in this matchup against a defense completely slammed by severe personnel losses . .
Finally the two-headed QB along with a gutted WR corps and MASSIVE question marks at TB make Virginia Tech VERY scheme prone. Teams will be able to sellout all day on 1st and 2nd down against Virginia Tech until their WR's step up, prove that they can separate, and make plays. To further complicate matters for the Hokies some sort of credible running game will be VERY difficult to establish, due to a tremendous toll taken on their TB depth via injuries, suspension, and transfers. Kansas suckered Glennon and Taylor into costly picks and I know Coach Pelini can dial up a few blitzes that can get these two to see something that isn't there (an earlier article posted on this site about Coach Pelini's first game against Oklahoma State made this point very well, and let's not forget that National Championship game where properly timed/called blitzes resulted in turnovers). Also Glennon has had his player growth stunted by the constant public desire among Hokie fans to get him surplanted and sometimes his own coaching staff has not been to supportive of him either. . .
This will be a big confidence-building game for the players, and a good win to have under our belts, going into the Missouri game. A very important MOMENTUM game. . .
GO BIG RED!!!

Well, the loss of 6 statyers on the VT D further reinforces my opinion all along that we have a very good chance of winning that game; in fact, in my mind we are the favorite. If KU can beat a good VT team, we can beat a rebuilding one. Our O will be very good and our D will be BO P's D--'nuff said.
Tyrod Taylor is the only guy that worries me about the Hokies, read option, read option.....
Sorry to see Zac T is at aTm; that is, now he is in the category of 'traitor' just like the rest of those NE coaches that got fired! *L
So, aTm will be a pro style team now and I can only see that as being an improvement for them--could never understand what the heck Franny's O was all about, seemed wierd.
Would be thrilled to see Doc get a great team going, I'd love to see that team be competative with KU.

ze bop, you are correct. I think we have a good chance in this game. Overall, I am just excited for this season to begin.

That word up there is 'starters'.
Anybody heard more buzz about Cody Green?

Going to be a hard sell to get Zac back on staff I think. What with him working for his father in law at A&M. I do think that he was the face of the program during the Callahan early years and if it weren't for his play we would have seen losing seasons for all 4 years.
