Don’t Make Him Angry
Some time ago I’d read a study that said that sports fans, on average, were less happy than non-fans. Thinking about the reasons, it’s probably because only fans of championship teams don’t look back without at least some disappointment at the end of the season. The pain of losing over the long haul will trump the joy of winning. Husker fans remember with pain seasons like 1990 and 1998 where the team won two to three times as many games as they lost. We still considered those disappointing.
Not wanting to give up sports and not wanting to be less happy, I resolved to remind myself that sports is entertainment, so that even if my beloved Huskers lost, I needed to find joy in the game regardless (“In the Deed, the Glory). Which is why in some ways, part of me looks forward to the Huskers first loss.
Don’t get me wrong, I NEVER want to see the Huskers lose, but seeing Bo Pelini after the team’s first loss is something I’m extremely curious to see. Who could forget the loss to Kansas State in 2003 when he took Bill Snyder to task for running up the score. Bo wasn’t even the head man then. Now, without a head coach to defer to, just imagine what Bo might say while stinging with the pain of defeat, with a microphone shoved in his face, and someone sure to ask a stupid question.
I expect the response to fall somewhere between Bill Parcells and the Incredible Hulk. The one good moment from the cheesy 1970’s live action Hulk TV show, was when Bruce Banner (the Hulk’s alter ego) says, “Don’t make me angry, you wouldn’t like me when I’m angry. We haven’t seen Bo good and peeved in a good long time. But we know it’s only a matter of time. When that time comes, grab the popcorn. It should be entertaining.

I swear Callahan was reading from a teleprompter...so talking to a real person again after the game will be refreshing.

His temper will most definitely be tested this fall, but I think Bo has grown up a lot over the last few years.

If it's not during a practice or a game he needs to put a lid on it.
His rant about Bill Snyder is on youtube and it's still embarrassing to listen to. Ironically, he makes the excuse that the only reason KSU was able to do that was that we had 'a bunch of senior walk-ons' in the game.
Apparently Bo hadn't yet developed his ability to put stars on recruits at that point. Perhaps he learned to do that later at Oklahoma or LSU...wait...nevermind.

Whew, for a moment there I was afraid you were going to pass up the chance to take a shot at Pelini.

It will be interesting to see how Bo does handle losing at NU. Hopefully he won't blow his top and acuse another coach of running up the score on his Huskers. Wow, I still can't believe his rant at Coach Snyder, years ago. I might have been able to understand a HEAD COACH might have words but I believe a DEFENSIVE coach should have nothing to say about points being scored on HIS team. Obviously, it was just too embarrasing for Bo to handle. Then, he referred to Coach Snyder as an "ASSHOLE"??? WOW! I don't care how big of a fan you claim to be, that's just wrong. Hopefully, he has his stuff "wired tight" now. Humility can be good for you some times.

I thought Bo going nuts at the Ref during the Alomo Bowl may have hurt his opportunity to interview for the job. But in reality, he was never really considered.
I remember one game, he lunged forward screaming at another Ref, in sync with Frank, then turned away and wheeled around again, in perfect step with Frank. The "Spinners" couldn't have been more in step. You knew he had an affect on Frank, in a good way, I think. He definitely had an affect on the "D".
I attribute his excoriation of Bill (who along with Osborne, belongs on a Mt. Rushmore of coaches) to his unfamiliarity with good 'ol Big XII grudge ball. Sure to leave a mark! In this league, if a team has an advantage, then drive the whole train through it. 'Cause they'd do it to you. If Bill could have "hung a hundred" on Nebraska, he would have. No quarter asked for, none given. I really can't wait for the Texas Tech game!
His two years in conference and his last three in the SEC, should have him dialed in on the collegial style.
Damn the torpedoes, full steam ahead!

Maybe someone from BRN can be the one to ask the first, stupid question after a loss to test your theory. HA HA.

Brad..........
While the altercation with Snyder was not Bo's best moment, Snyder's actions as a head coach were far more insulting. Other than the clock running out, the game was over. Sending starters back out after the outcome had been conceeded was classless. Devaney, Osborne, Solich or even your beloved Callahan would never have pulled that. I am sure that Bo will have a better grip on himself, and that he will represent the University of Nebraska quite well. I have no doubt that things may get "interesting" but I doubt that anything will approach the rant with Snyder.
Happy Memorial Day to all. Remeber those that gave all, that we might have the opportunity to rant at each other over themes that are dwarfed by what they fought for.
God Bless America and her fallen heros!

"Beloved Callahan?"
The collective IQ in our fan base isn't very high. Everyone is either a Callahan guy or a Solich guy. That's really dumb.
I don't care who is coaching our team as long as we made an honest effort to get the best guy we could and he recruits well.
Focus on that concept for awhile and let me know how it goes.
bnahusker May 24 08
Hey Brad,
I supported Solich AND Callahan and you replied with "Everyone is either a Callahan guy or a Solich guy. That's really dumb."
Nothing like generalizations to support your theory of the low "Collective IQ" of our fan base!
Take a bow. You just became your own best example!
Focus on that reality for awhile and let me know how it goes.

@ BNAHUSKER, you bring up an interesting point. I wonder how many Big 8 or Big 12 coaches have ever put in 2nd and 3rd stringers only to bring back the 1st team offense? I remember a game when Switzer brought back the 1st string Defense to preserve a shutout but other than that I can't remember an instance. I'm sure it's happened many times and that doesn't make it right but just can't recall any other times. Only when a games outcome is evident would you bring out the entire 2nd string so therefore, bringing the starting offense would be in bad taste. I'll just bet years of ass whoopings had a lot to do with Coach Snyders decision

What you wrote doesn't even make sense...anyone who uses generalizations is dumb?
If there is a fan base anywhere that deserves generalizations it's ours. After decades of success our fan base is whiny, spoiled, and completely delusional.
To make things worse we have guys like you have taken an oath to defend that delusion at all costs on message boards everywhere, reality be damned. Anyone who says anything that goes against the delusion sends you crying to your bedroom, Unfinished Business tee shirt and 1995 Husker edition Sports Illustrated in hand.

Delusion is one thing, optimism is another. That being said, I'd like to think the majority of fans posting here (and Husker fans in general) are an optimistic bunch. We are optimistic that Pelini is the right guy and mature enough after stints in other big name, highly public jobs to handle the bad with the good. Also, on an optimistic tangent, I am sure you all (as I am prone to do) have considered the potential of our offense and Pelini's defensive prowess and imagined great things happening almost immediatley. While the realist in me and most past examples say it will take time, one specific example example stands out to me. When Jon Gruden was named head coach in Tampa, he retained former Husker player/coach Monte Kiffin. The combination of talent accrued by Tony Dungy and his staff and Kiffin's defense capped with Gruden's offense won the Super Bowl in Gruden's first year. It just seems to me that we COULD BE in a SIMILAR situation at Nebraska. With the talent Callahan brought in, Watson's offense and Pelini now at the healm, I just thought there were some interesting connections. Can't wait to see how it plays out! Go Big Red!

Brad,
The use of the word "Dumb" was quoted from your previous post, not my choice of words. And just so you know, I missed the meeting when they had the oath, and I've never subscribed to, purchased, or to my knowledge, ever read Husker Illustrated.
Goodbye Brad,

Callahan did it (run up the score) against Kansas State against Ron Prince in the fall. He put starters in to score the last TD.

well, i guess its not a great idea to go bilistic on the field on the opposition's HC--not very good PR.
secretly, though, i wouldnt mind seeing BO intimidate a well deserving coach, whom we all hate--dan hawkins comes to mind, or maybe pinkel. I mean really, wouldn't that be some sight to see, hawkins with that deer-in-the-headlights gaze, or pinktoid shrinking back into some blank affect, regressive childhood thing--right there on the 50 ydline!!
Or how about mike leach, his 'mastermind' all shortcircuiting and such...yay!
WOOHOO! now, that's what i call entertainment!
p.s.,and to quote our hero BO P: "you-z gotta problem wi' dat? if so, i-z refer you-z to my cousin giovanni!!"
p.s.s., sorry dudes, too lazy for the caps today...itsa holiday...

thank god we have brad now on our blog team to show us the way to a higher IQ gene pool.....

I don't care what the hell Brad thinks, Bill Snyder was and is a classless ASSHOLE and I applaud Pellini for pointing it out to him. We were being blown out and it was like giving Rudy a chance to play, for him to reinstate his first team was the most classless act I have seen in a long time. Doombob pointed out a close second and that was the classless act of Bill Callahan last year.
