Dallas Area Product on the Radar

The Huskers have made dozens of offers to players at a number of positions for the recruiting class of 2009. Many of them have not yet been rated by the major scouting websites nor tracked real well in terms of their interest in the schools courting them. That’s why when you see a kid that already has an offer from Nebraska and indicates a high degree of interest, it grabs your attention.

Brady Brown is a Dallas-area wide receiver who goes 6’5” and 205 lbs. A close approximation would be former All-Big 12 receiver Todd Blythe of Iowa State. So far, he’s reportedly been offered by Iowa, Duke, Rice, Vanderbilt, and Kansas in addition to his recent offer from the Huskers. He also indicates a strong interest in KU, so if the early indications are correct it will be a showdown between the Huskers and Jayhawks for his services. He carries a high GPA, but Kansas offered him anyway (forgive me, I couldn’t resist).

Brown has earned an early three-star rating just as Blythe did and was very productive as a junior hauling in 95 catches for over 1,000 yards with 12 touchdowns. A quick glance at his film doesn’t show blinding speed (neither did Blythe), but obviously his size would create mismatches. With his frame, he could easily bulk up into the range of a tight end, if he were so inclined. He’ll be one to watch in the coming year as it appears likely he’ll be headed to a Big 12 North school.

Here is Steve...not afraid to go right back in to the water with the "sharks". Let the debate over this prospect begin! Oh yes, I know he has offers from three of the worst football programs in history (four if you count KU). That will raise red flags with some.

Seriously though, he sounds like a good prospect. You can't coach a kid to be 6'5''.

The comparison to Blythe intrigues me. I ask you, has he mastered the art of the push off? If so, then he really is like Blythe. Oh, I couldn't help it...

Happy Memorial Day, everyone.

Shocked he's not a 1 star product!!!

For the most part, it's difficult to judge a class until about early January.

I just think a lot of the Solich-esque comments in the media from our coaching staff regarding recruiting have people nervous.

People can try to spin the past all they want, but Solich and his staff sucked at recruiting. A handful of defensive gems spread out over four classes doesn't make you a good recruiter when all of your offensive talent sucks and you have holes up and down your defense.

People should be wary of poor recruiting because it's like a cancer that silently develops under the surface.

Thank god Solich's last class just graduated.

After getting a wake-up call in his 7-7 season, Solich fired the staff he inherited (and whom were past the age where they could recruit effectively) and got some younger coaches. That staff got one--count it, one--year to recruit.

While I DO blame Solich for the circumstances that led to his dismissal, it is not as black and white as some would make it. His new staff did not really get a chance to recruit more than that 03 year.

Laner,
There-in I believe is the issue. Solich was so loyal to Osborne that he couldn't possibly dismiss any of the coaches held over from TO's tenure during his first season. It's been documented that Dan Young and Milt Tenopir weren't very effective as far as recruiting in there final years. Solich left the chips fall and Solich took 100% of the heat which as a head coach he probably should have. It probably could be categorized as a situation of circumstance. And I agree with you too even as I get older that everything isn't as black and white as people tend to think. Right or wrong, it is what it is.
Brad,
That's what I've been trying to say for the most part is that right now it is too early to rate a recruit based upon stars. It's sort of like pre-season football rankings. What is the purpose? Let Pelini's first season play out and then review his class after signing day. I was probably one of those that didn't feel Solich was the right guy leading the program and I too was probably one of those guys banging on the drums, but as I look back and see what has transpired over the last several years, I wonder what another year could have done with Solich's last staff. I love the offense that Callahan brought here and I hope it can be sustained because I've always felt that NU had a shot even if they were down by 17 in the fourth quarter.
All in all, I'm excited for Pelini and there are games on the schedule that look to go either way and I'm glad now that he's in charge. It could be another rollercoaster year.

hopefully he has a better attitude/demeanor than blythe...i've never really liked that guy, though he's a decent receiver...possession type.

which reminds me, we need game breakers, not more possession type athletes....

Brad, It's time to quit beating the Solich drum. He is gone! For the next three years we will be playing with BC's recruits. Let your hate of the dragon sleep and look for puff to ease your soul.
