Pioneers! O Pioneers! Nebraska Prepares For Life in the Big Ten 8 comments
COME my tan-faced children,
Follow well in order, get your weapons ready,
Have you your pistols? have you your sharp-edged axes?
Pioneers! O pioneers!
Walt Whitman was not thinking about Big Ten football division alignments when he wrote his ode to the West. But the call to action for Nebraska in their first two years in the Big Ten is very clear. If NU wants to win the Big Ten, they will need to do it by beating the best the conference has to offer.

Nebraska Gets Murderous Big Ten Schedule in 2011-12 46 comments
As anticipated (based on the ESPN leak), Nebraska was placed in a division with Michigan, Michigan State, Iowa, Minnesota, and Northwestern to begin play in 2011. Nebraska will play an annual game with Penn State as well that is "protected" into the future.

With games just a few days out now, you can start placing your bets (for entertainment purposes only) about who will win and who will lose in the first week of the college season. The Big Red Network has also been invited to submit weekly picks of the winners and losers in the Big Ten by the Daily Gopher. But we won't stop there. Read on.

Summary of Bo Pelini’s Tuesday press conference 3 comments
- No starters will be announced before kickoff Saturday. Bo wants players fighting for their positions.
- Brandon Thompson, backup offensive tackle, is questionable for Saturday with an ankle sprain. Everyone else is healthy.
- Bo says it’s a misconception that teams account for a specific player (like Suh or Crick) and try to double team every down.
- The most important defensive stat is scoring defense because that has the biggest impact on the outcome. Also, performance on third down.
- All three quarterbacks can run, throw and understand the position. It’s a good problem to have.
One Hill WKU Shouldn’t Be Able to Top 10 comments
For a school with nearly 100 years of footballing history, it was a bit of surprise to find that the official Western Kentucky football website doesn’t include an actual “History” section.
Minus the World Wars, the Hilltoppers have been playing football since 1913, going a perfect 1-0 in that first season by shutting out Elizabethtown High. Just short of 40 years later, WKU made their first postseason appearance in the unfortunately defunct Refrigerator Bowl. Successful stints at the Division II and I-AA level, including a national title in 2002, followed.
And now they’re coming to Lincoln under first year coach and former BMOC Willie Taggart as sort of an enigma.

What’s Scary About Texas A&M 6 comments
Saving the best for last perhaps before we turn our full attention to Western Kentucky, we now focus on the Aggies. You see predictions for the Huskers ranging from eight wins to twelve in the regular season. But one of the most common losses you'll see is the road game in College Station. Even people picking Nebraska to go 11-1, often pick A&M as the one loss. There are some reasons to buy into that line of thinking.

What’s Scary About Colorado? 5 comments
What's scary about Colorado is what's always been scary. They hate Nebraska. They circle their game with the Huskers as being the most important on their schedule, even if Nebraska doesn't grant them the same respect. They can't claim the upper hand in the long history of the series or even the most recent history, so going out with a win would mean everything to their fans and their in-state players. They're also in a desperate position. They need to win now for their head coach. Since his son is on the team, that means that they'll probably want to play for him. And the game against Nebraska just might be for bowl eligibility. Meanwhile, it's conceivable that the Huskers may have already locked up the division when the teams meet.

What’s Scary About Kansas? 3 comments
Football philosophy may not win football games, but attitudes sure affect how college students perform on the field. The difference in philosophy and attitude between last year's head coach Mark Mangino and Turner Gill can be described by any number of cliche's, but there's no simpler way to say it than they are almost exactly opposite in every way that you can think of. Mangino ruled the team with the intent of striking fear into his players. Gill hopes to inspire and influence with positivity. His plan is to improve not just the quality of the football players, but also the quality of the young men in helmets and pads. And generally, teams without turmoil tend to fare a little better than those deep in it.
