Spano to Visit

Kody Spano, a high school quarterback prospect out of Texas is set to visit Nebraska this weekend. Rivals.com rates him as the seventh best dual-threat quarterback nationally and gives him three stars out of a possible five.

Spano is listed as 6’2” and 202 lbs. with a 4.7 40-yard dash. Presumably, if he didn’t pan out at quarterback he’d have the athleticism to contribute elsewhere, like safety. Over his last two seasons of high school football he accounted for over 4,000 yards passing and almost 900 rushing with 75 total touchdowns (54 passing/21 rushing) against 19 interceptions. His accuracy was solid as he completed 62% of his passes as a senior.

Spano is said to be high on the Huskers and appears to be the lone player set to visit this weekend. With offer in hand, it seems entirely possible he might commit by early next week. With nine more players set to visit the following weekend including Elite 11 quarterback Sean Renfree, Spano might feel some pressure to lock in a spot. But truthfully, two quarterbacks would not be too many for Nebraska to take this year and Spano would be a worthwhile addition to a rebounding class regardless of whether or not Renfree were to commit. Chances are Spano will commit somewhere next week. He's a mid-year graduate and as such wants to be enrolled in college for a Spring semester.

Hopefully, Pelini's national championship preparations won't put a damper on the visit.

For what it is worth, Scouts Inc. gives Spano a higher grade than Renfree. But, who knows if any of those service reports translate in to on-field production?

My point is that I would be happy with either of them filling our QB void in this class. Both? Well...let's not get greedy. ;-)

Next week should be an enormous week for official visits, too. Lots to reasons to stay tuned.

It would really be nice to have a quarterback in this class and Spano looks like a good one.

The recruiting service rating system confuses me. I would think the seventh best dual threat QB would be higher than three stars.

WOW Jan 04 08

Media said "It would really be nice to have a quarterback in this class..."

What about the gloriously tauted Jim Ebke?

I mean folks here and elsewhere have said that he's coming back because he isn't playing the position he wants to at SDSU and he wants to live his dream of playing (NOT just being ON THE TEAM but PLAYING on Saturdays) for Nebraska.

With Darren's in depth post about the Walk On program under Pederson/Callahan I see no real reason for Ebke to have NOT already been a part of the program before now.

I am in no way trashing the Walk On program or anyone who has been or will be a part of it.
I'm just saying that for Ebke to make the switch now looks (on too many fronts) to be a 'pie in the sky' move by a youngster caught up in the hoopla of the BO TO 'New Deal'.

BTW Still no takers on the Misty's dinner wager about the record next season.
I'll run that offer through Signing Day in case some folks are hesitant because of the incoming class.

bnahusker Jan 04 08

Misty's? I have't had Misty's in years! When are you taking me, and what is the bet? Truth be told, due to the internet, and cable explosions, I miss Misty's, Val's, and Runza nearly as much as our beloved Big Red. I really shouldn't type those names before lunch! AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!

Road Trip to lincoln later this month. Taste buds are ready.

Go Huskers!

bnahusker (Bob), The bet that JR is refering to is about NU's record next year.

In a different thread, a poster named Doombob made a comment that NU will win 9 games next year. WOW/JR didn't think that was realistic. And, he's willing to put his money (and Misty's meat) where his mouth is.

The wager is a Misty's dinner, the variable is 9 wins or not. NU does it, JR buys. If they don't, the other person buys. No takers so far.

I'm not involved on either side of it. I count chickens, not eggs.

bnahusker Jan 04 08

Thanks Darren,

Is the 9 win bet for regular season only, or could it include an Alamo Bowl win over Ilinois?

Bob

WOW Jan 04 08

Thanks for the wager explanation Darren. I too "count chickens" and Eat Steak. :-)

As to including a bowl win in the wager:
Being that I made this 'Call' of loses in an earlier post;

20 Sept Virginia Tech (now 27th)
4 Oct Missouri
11 Oct Texas Tech
1 Nov Oklahoma
8 Nov Kansas
28 Nov Colorado

For me to come out a winner I would need to go 4 out of 6 if we include a bowl game victory and 3 out of 6 if not.
I can see AT LEAST 4 of those 6 teams winning, so sure, the wager is now modified to include a bowl game (provided they go).

Nebraska wins 9 more more games and I buy.
Less than 9 wins and I eat free.

Of course doombob has first right of refusal as he is the person the wager was originally directed at.
Being he seems to have no interest I'm sure he'll speak up and give the go ahead for you to buy my dinner. :-)

JR

BTW An Alamo bowl win over Illinois isn't much different than regular season wins against
Western Michigan, (5 & 7)
San Jose State, (5 & 7)
New Mexico State. (4 & 9)

An intriguing scenario, if Spano steps aboard for the spring semester.
Whither Witt and Zach Lee? Witt has alot of time left "on station". The recruiting of "dual threats" has now officially commenced. This would have more to do with '09. A season that could end up with Zach Lee as a starter.
An intriguing situation to me, anyway. Quarterbacks are known to be "skittish" and "coltish", so I'm a little doubtful all three will stay on the roster, if Spano signs.
Zach Lee would seem to be stuck, though. Already a JC and a redshirt this year, if he transfers to a "Bowl Championship Subdivision" school he'd have 2 years left after the 1 year wait. He enrolled as a 4 to play 3 guy.
He's always been a guy I've been curious about, assuming he's back full speed from his knee injury. He was known to be pretty fast with a strong arm (rumor was he had the strongest arm)....

If I get to dine with you, how could I possibly lose? I think I'll lay low on this wager for a while. I'll get back to you in November, and see where we are at that point! Just a quick question. Didn't Dr. Tom tinkier with something that looked like the Spread with Steve Taylor, against Michigan in the Fiesta Bowl one year? It wasn't the "I", but it was something different.

Have a great weekend!

Your mention of the '85 season's Fiesta Bowl brings back some memories!
A sad reminder though, of Brian Heimer's suicide in August (I think it was) of that year.

If I recall, Steve wasn't the starter. It was McCathorn Clayton. Nebraska had a lead until some turnovers pretty much finished them. Steve did come in later in the game and I remember thinking, "this guy's going to be good". Strong arm and very fast.

The formation I remember most during that game, was a Power I set with an extra back lined up next to the fullback.
Osborne had all types of formations, as you know. Even spread sets, or "trips" of receivers on the strong side. He just didn't run them 60 times a game.

I would love to read a report about Tom sitting down with Watson, with chalk and eraser board!

bnahusker Jan 04 08

Read a report? Give me a glass of milk, and a bag of Oreos, and I'll sit in on that meeting! I'd tell you all about it. Promise!

doombob Jan 06 08

Wager all you want, you have my blessing to take anyone up on that offer. Due to strict limitation imposed by my wife and budget I don't bet money or food anymore - just humiliation and embarrassment. I have similar bets going with some of my KU and MU friends - loser wears T shirt of other team for a whole day.

cvldfg Jan 06 08

I am here in NC. How can I get in on this bet?

W. Michigan
San Jose St.
New Mexico St.

We will outscore these 3 by a 150-40 difference!

VT----They have no offense. Their D loses too many key players. I live down here, they are kings of the ACC (Almost a College Conference). I predict an NU victory here and now.

Missouri---@ Home I predict 50/50
@TT--overrated
@ISU-- win 35-13
Bay--win 42-10
@OU---loss
KU---payback flash in the pan
@KSU--??? 60/40 we win
CU---We will kick the crap out of these guys!

I want in on this. Any suggestions? I say 9-3
or 10-2 depending on breaks in the games. Plus a bowl game. Easy $$$.

James Moore Jan 06 08

Well it's late Sunday night EST and it seems that Spano is aboard. Welcome and it's nice to have two guys who REALLY want to be here (the DT from California). Hopefully we'll hold on to Hoch and Compton (seems likely) and snag a few others. Hey why not go after some UCLA, Texas A&M and West Virginia recruits? Seems there's no love in the recruiting world. Also appears that there's going to be a stronger finish than maybe we would've expected a few weeks ago. . .
