Safety Decommits, Lineman Commits

Safety prospect Keelan Johnson of Arizona decommitted from Nebraska in order to stay closer to home and attend Arizona State. It probably didn’t hurt that the Sun Devils are coming off a ten win season that some believed was worthy of a BCS bowl bid (though ASU lost to Texas in the Holiday Bowl).

The Huskers still have safety John Levorson of Crete committed for the 2008 class and have two safeties visiting this weekend in P.J. Smith and Shane Prater. Cornerback commit David Whitmore also has the size to be an effective safety, if needed.

Johnson had been among the shakiest of the remaining commitments. Scout.com had listed his commitment as “soft” for some time. Only Missouri linebacker/athlete Will Compton remains listed as a “soft” verbal among the remaining commits. Junior college lineman (and class of 2006 recruit) Ricky Henry still has academic questions to address.

The good news however is that the Huskers received a commitment from lineman Cole Pensick of Lincoln Northeast for the class of 2009. Pensick, the son of a former Nebraska lineman, will likely play on the interior line either defensively or offensively.

Too bad...Johnson would have been a great pick up. It seems to me (based on Okafar's comments) that Pelini has pressed these recruits to make a decision one way or another. I don't know if Will C. has more visits to make elsewhere, but the fact he has not de-committed this past week seems to be a good indication he might remain a Husker.
