Huskers to Add “Huge” Tim Beck as Running Backs Coach
Tim Beck, the passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach at Kansas will become Nebraska’s next running backs coach according to the Lincoln Journal-Star. Beck is regarded as a “huge recruiter in Texas” according to the newspaper. How huge is an interesting question.
According to Rivals.com Beck was directly involved in recruiting no fewer than seven players over the past 2 ½ seasons (including the partial class of 2008). That includes quarterback Todd Reesing and four-star cornerback Anthony Webb. But if we consider that landing a commitment is often more than a one or two man endeavor, then you might imagine that Beck had a hand in any of the twenty-five additional commitments from Texas that have taken place since 2005. That would be huge indeed.
But it’s not just that these kids came from Texas. KU was getting their share of kids from Texas before Beck arrived. But the quality of the kids has increased over the last four seasons which Beck could well deserve some credit for.
Beyond that, KU was in the top ten in the country in pass efficiency. He also coached an all-timer like Mike Brown in high school. Whether it was coaching or recruiting, Beck was getting the job done. That’s why it’s especially gratifying that he chose Nebraska. The Jayhawks were a top-notch team in 2007, but that doesn’t mean they’ve surpassed the Huskers to such a degree that a coach wouldn’t still leave Kansas to come to Nebraska.
Sure Beck and Pelini are friends, but would Beck have left Kansas to be a running back’s coach at Wyoming if Pelini took a job there? Not likely. Just as affirming as it was to steal assistants from Colorado when they were winning the division, it’s nice to poach an assistant from a Kansas team that is seemingly among the best in the country.
Now Beck will come to Lincoln, and who knows maybe he’ll bring some kids that were thinking of playing for Kansas with him. All in all, a nice "get" for Pelini.

Nice post Steve.
I like seeing Beck added mostly because he really knows our conference and division rivals. There should be minimal learning curve for him in coaching in this league.

Talk about being "multiple." This guy knows the passing game well. Maybe our guys will help the QB ease the pressure with some good blitz pickups now. I'm just wondering what he can bring to the table in terms of helping our guys rush the ball. I know he's been an O - coordinator at Missouri State and head coach at high school level, but can he get our running game to where it needs to be?

Another good thing about Beck's hiring is that should Watson get a head coaching opportunity in the next couple of years, NU will have an experienced group of assistants from which to promote from within. That goes for Cotton as well as Beck.
