Another Busy Recruiting Week for Nebraska

The Huskers continue to host recruits including some midweek arrivals. California running back/athlete DeLeon Eskridge arrived yesterday and Texas defensive end Jacquies Smith is set to arrive today. Eskridge has given a “soft" verbal commitment to Minnesota and Smith also has offers from Colorado and Missouri.

The weekend should include at least five additional visitors. Tall safety P.J. Smith is set to visit from Louisiana and reportedly has offers from LSU, Arkansas, Alabama, and Arizona State (among others). He appears to be on the fence between Nebraska and Arkansas and is set to visit the Razorbacks next weekend.

Twin defensive back prospects Shaun and Shane Prater of Omaha are set to visit. Both are considered “soft” commitments to Iowa but hadn’t received a ton of attention from the prior coaching staff at Nebraska. It seems likely they could be lured to Lincoln. While comparisons to the Bullocks twins may be inevitable, they don’t come in quite as highly touted as the Tennessee pair, which is probably fair considering how much bigger the Bullocks twins were. But if you're going to take a chance, better to do it on in-state kids as they are among those who bring the most passion and ultimately the identity of the team. Mike Minter was small when he arrived in Lincoln. He worked out OK. Getting a pair also means it's probably that much less likely that they would quit or transfer. I have it on good authority that twins can get to be very close and may not want to live far apart from one another.

Two already committed players will visit, four-star tight end Ben Cotton of Iowa (and son of Barney Cotton) will visit as will tall safety John Levorson of Crete.

Another happy recruiting side-note (for those who care) is that Scout.com bumped recent “recommit” defensive end Josh Williams to a four star rating. Overnight he has become that much more appealing to Husker fans.

It seems likely additional recruits could be invited for this weekend, so as always stay tuned because recruiting news changes fast.

Looks like the staff is well organized and continuing the push. Pelini keeping Ted Gilmore as recruiting coordinator has to have helped.
Looks like this class isn't going to appear to be as highly rated as Callahan's first class. Which was considered to be well inside top 30. And that's ok. Sooner than later, I'm going to stop comparing any future recruiting with Callahan's. If the young O-linemen of recent classes develop into "playas," that's about all I can ask for, from Callahan's classes. Recruiting good line prospects on both sides is the most important aspect, over the next couple of years, imo.
Just please, no more JC D-linemen. Half don't contribute and the other half don't until they're seniors and there goes your depth.

If this team shows itself much improved over '07, recruiting skill guys should be alot easier. The team will probably get more guys who, starting out, are more versatile offensively and defensively. Guys like that don't fit recruiting guru "prototypes" and won't get as much hype. That's ok, too. For a change.
Though, recruiting top Backs and Quarterbacks, dual threat or whatever, is a must.
Solich couldn't successfully do that. Callahn's pipeline was just beginning to be established, with Brandon, Marlon and the QB's. That has GOT to continue, to even get back into any standard of title contention.

Two more developments since yesterday:

1) Linebacker Alonzo Whaley of Texas is set to visit. He's been offered by Oklahoma State, Arizona State, and Louisiana Tech, along with Nebraska.

2) Cornerback David Whitmore is bumped to a four-star ranking by Rivals.com, earning him more cool points with Husker fans. What they should really like is his 6'2" frame.

Another update: It's Micah Kreikemeier visiting this week instead of John Levorson (who will visit next weekend).
