Alonzo Whaley Commits

The Huskers landed another verbal commitment this weekend, this time from linebacker prospect Alonzo Whaley. Considering NU’s great need at the position, it’s a welcome commitment even if he’s not a Parade All-American.

Whaley had offers from Arizona State, Louisiana Tech, and Oklahoma State, making visits in recent weeks to the latter two according to Scout.com. He is a three-star player according to Rivals.com.

The Huskers depth chart of scholarship linebackers includes Phillip Dillard, Nick Covey, Blake Lawrence and Austin Stafford. The Huskers have commitments from Sean Fisher, Micah Kreikemeier, and Kyler Reed in addition to Whaley. Will Compton has also given a “soft” commitment. If the Huskers can hold these commitments they’d have just enough scholarship players to field a three-deep going in to fall camp. Walk-ons like Kyle Moore could also contribute but clearly the Huskers need linebackers and lots of them.

Whaley fits the bill and should give the Huskers some options for the future.

Looks like a nice prospect!
Another nice thing is, it looks like he was offered a scholarship in the spring by Okie ST, but didn't accept. It also looks like he hadn't previously verballed to anyone. No "hem and haw". So, he evaluated his opportunities and made his decision right when the train conductor bellowed "all aboard!"
Assuming his measureables from Scout are accurate, he's just as good a prospect as others the team has offered to.
Doesn't appear to have mixed loyalties, with teams or (former) coaches. Meaning, he's not "infected".
Maybe, he doesn't have many "over the top" expectations of the program, but has expectations of himself and whether a
program can facilitate it. Which is what good programs do.
Part of the "Nebraska Way".
I'd like to see a couple more decent "fatties" to go along with!

Encouraging on two levels...he was excited by the prospect of playing for Bo and staff, and he represents SPEED at the WLB position (4.6 in the 40 if you beleive Scout). I think the upgrade of speed at LB will be a major key to the Pelini defensive philosophy. I hate to mention next year's recruits, but Pelini and company are going to bring in their type of players in a BIG way, especially next year!

Bo Pelini recruited well everywhere he as landed. Nebraska will be no different for him. I know most of you idiots don't understand recruiting because you are too stupid to slurp all the intangibles in.
