Tyson Hetzer Signs

One thing that’s been different to reconcile over the past few weeks for people who were especially excited about the hiring of Bo Pelini, has been the rash of decommitments that have occurred since he signed on. While decommitments are the “cost of doing business” when a team changes coaches, that doesn’t make it any easier to watch.

Well at least one player is now “in the boat” as junior college tight end Tyson Hetzer has now signed his letter of intent according to Rivals.com. At 6’7”, Hetzer is sure to cause some match-up problems as a receiver. It would seem pretty easy to lob passes to him when matched up against shorter defenders (and what defender wouldn’t be shorter).

With 265 lbs. on his frame, Hetzer also would seem beefy enough to be a factor as a blocker as well. His range would seem particularly useful in pass protection.

Despite his size and being listed as running somewhere between 4.6 and 4.75 in the 40 yard dash, Hetzer is rated as “only” a three-star athlete by Rivals and Scout.com. That may be because his bench press number is not otherworldly. But adding strength would seem to be one of the easier things to achieve. With Nebraska not desperate for immediate help (there are other options for 2007), Hetzer can take a year to develop without causing problems.

So while Husker fans may still need to sweat out the rest of the recruiting class a bit, they no longer need to sweat out Hetzer. That’s one piece of good recruiting news among some otherwise gloomy reports.

Glad to have one officially "in" for the year. Welcome to NU, Tyson.

One of the knocks against Hetzer is that he hasn't played a lot of football, and doesn't look especially fluid while playing. Maybe a bit to big and stiff to be a TE.

That's not my opinion, just things I have read.

Hmmm...anybody else think that at 6'7'' and 265 lbs, a redshirt year and a position switch might be in this kid's future? (*cough* tackle *cough*)

Regardless, he's a nice prospect, and I'm happy NU has him.

Tyson couldn't have a better scenario. Good academics, a program with great tradition, a program with quality coaches, and Ron Brown as his position coach.

With his size, I could see him replacing Mo Purify in the end zone if he has good hands.

More good news! Maybe Hetzer will have another QB to throw him the ball?

Kody Spano (formerly committed with OSU) is looking at Nebraska and Tulsa. (Come on now...you would think we could win a recruiting battle over Tulsa?) Here is the full article:

By the way, he is ranked 7th in the nation for dual threat QB's by rivals...if you actually take stock in that.

For those of us scratching our heads asking "what happened to our recruits", I found an interesting article that possibly explains the defections to CU. Most notably, these Husker committs all took their visit at the same time. I could be reading too much into this, but considering the rumors that many of these recruits developed relationships with each other...it would seem plausable. Another thing is that CU is preparing for their bowl game, which allowed these recruits to see practices and see how position coaches interact with players. Compare that to NU recruiting visits that were probably clouded in a fog of "who's my position coach"?

Thanks for the recruiting updates. As I don't have unlimited time for Husker reading, this site has moved to my #1 fan site. Keep up the great work!

Who all is 100% committed to Nebraska Steinkuhler, Cotton, Fisher, Whitmore, Hetzer, Reed, Henry, Kreikemeier, and Levorson the others are shakey on commits still thats like 1-5star 6-3 stars and 2-2 stars thats not bad when you look at iowa state or other big 12 teams we didnt care about rank in recruiting class before callahan why should we now?

It is nice to see one young man who is intelligent enough to see where this program is headed and excited about having the opportunity to be a part of it. I know the HuskerNation is a little antsy about losing recruits but, give Bo and company a chance. If we can put up with Calahan and co. for the past 4 yrs, we can give Bo and his guys the same. GO BIG RED!!!!! Keep the faith HuskerNation. Greatness will be ours once again. HuskerJim Wylie, Texas

That is good news! As a JC though, I sure hope he has "game". I don't doubt that JC recruiting will be curtailed. Especially on offense. They just need more time to get ready.
Doesn't seem to matter how big they are, either.
