The Search Begins…or Continues

This quote by Tom Osborne Saturday says it all, “I have not talked to any coaching candidates yet. Our search firm may have contacted some coaches to gauge their interest if the position would open up, but I don't know who they've talked to or what their answer was. The Omaha World-Herald has even reported that former Husker defensive coordinator (and current LSU defensive coordinator) Bo Pelini has already been interviewed and Nebraska has also asked to speak with Turner Gill.

It’s clear that the Huskers are well on their way interviewing candidates to replace Bill Callahan. Even if Bo Pelini is THE candidate, others will be interviewed (even if only as a formality). Turner Gill will be interviewed. Beyond those two names, any number of up and coming head coaches or standout assistants might get the call.

While fans may disagree about who their ideal candidate would be, they can all agree they’d like the hire to happen soon, both for the sake of recruiting and just to end the suspense. Recent circumstances at other schools also seem likely to help the cause for a speedy hire. Bo Pelini’s LSU team lost a triple overtime game against Arkansas that will keep the Tigers out of the BCS national championship game. That would mean an exit after the SEC championship game could happen without a lot of controversy. In Buffalo, Gill’s Bulls are having one of their best seasons in years, but it’s still a losing season which means Gill is available this week.

So it might be as little as 10 days to 2 weeks before the next coach is hired. A far cry from the lengthy search endured under Steve Pederson four years ago. There’s sure to be plenty of headlines about who is being considered by NU and who’s considering NU in the meantime. By Christmas, the future should be a lot clearer. In no small part, due to a good head start.

Scenarios:

I can see Bo Peep at HC with Watson still OC.

I can see Gill at HC and bringing over several old NU-ers, but no Watson.

I can't see Bo Peep and Gill together though I heard that was a possibility. How would that work?

I like the first scenario most. I'd really like to keep Watson and a couple other of the assistants: Rudolph, Jordan and Gilmore.

scott Nov 26 07

why do people like any of the ass. coaches, keep one for transition and have the rest look someplace else. I saw nothing that would make me want to keep any of them

Dwayne Nov 26 07

I have liked Watson ever since he was at Colorado. I thought Callahan made a good hire in getting him. I have no idea though how much influence he had with calling any of the plays. I wouldn't hesitate in keeping him if I needed an OC.

Dwayne Nov 26 07

In my mind this whole thing feels like the Doctor is going out to pick up the family Christmas tree. No one knows what this "tree" is going to look like, but you can bet, once he gets it home and stood up in front of everyone, it's going to look and feel pretty damn good. I'll be home for Christmas, you can count on that.

Interesting article on how LSU's defense wasn't "all that great" this year:
http://collegefootball.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=743760

That aside...my vote is for Bo as head and Gil as Off. Coordinator or keep Watson on as offensive coordinator. We get a defensive guru, an NU insider, and either a spread option attack (with Gil) or more WCO (with Watson). Either way...Ganz will be ready to play.

On those who are down on Watson. Let's remember that our offense played pretty well this year and the WCO looked the best its ever looked (although the run game was avg. at best). Watson IS a good recruiter, showed himself to be a good signal caller, a motivator on the sideline, and he really is very well liked by the players. Also, remember, this transition is only going to be tougher if we have to install a brand new offense...yet again.

Dwayne...the tree will be up in a week or two and I think NU fans and recruits will see somthing to get excited about!

Bill in Iowa Nov 26 07

Here's another thought from Left Field...

What if NU hires Bo in the next week...and LSU loses Miles to Michigan? After their AD once again says, "Are you kidd'in me!" I wonder if any LSU defensive recruits will think about jumping ship to Nebraska? I looked on rivals and found two of their solid verbal recruits (DE and LB) with NU on their list of schools they considered.

A week or two? I expect a decision to be rendered and told to the public by Friday. Parker Executive Search specializes in QUICKLY and QUIETLY pre-screening and selecting potential clients (thus eliminating tedious background checks or future embarrassments). Everyone that Dr. Osborne is meeting with this week would work as our next Head Coach. It's just a matter of Dr. Osborne's (very important) opinion of who he wants to hire.

cvldfg Nov 26 07

What about this scenario?

Hire Monte Kiffin to come in and be the DC/HC.
He brings in Turner to help learn the offense with Watson. Then in 3-5 years retires and turns over the reigns to Turner.

We accomplish a great Defensive mind, an elder (former husker) to mentor Turner. We keep the offense that is currently in place with Watson and Gill succeeding. Then, we get to turn it over to Gill and it all stays in the family.

Just asking, I have yet to hear anyone talk about that scenario. Is it unrealistic? Is it not a good idea? Your thoughts!!!!!

Husker55 Nov 26 07

I like the Bo-Gill scenario. Hire Bo to be the Head Coach. Have Gill come in as a Assistant Coach/Offensive Coordinator. We can keep Watson as either a Offensive Coordinator or Assistant Coach.

I do like the idea of bringing in Monty Kiffin. He can run the Defensive Coordinator part while Gill runs the offense and Bo runs the show.

It's anybody guess at this point. But I would think that Doctor TO will want to bring the old Nebraska offense scheme back. This West Coast Offense experiment is in its final termnination stage. Go big Red. LJK

Mizzou #1 as of yesterday, now that's some depressing news. OVERRATED! Maybe 7 or 8, but not numero uno. Oh well, enjoy it for a week 'til the Sooners smush ya again.

I'm not sure any of the combo coach deals speculated above would work since probably all those guys want to be HCs and I doubt if Gill feels he needs more mentoring as an asst.--that's why he took the Buffalo job, to be an HC.

I have no prob with retaining Watson and Rudolph.

doombob Nov 26 07

This year's Mizzou team is as much a real deal as the 2001 Huskers. Exceptional quarterback play elevating a good team to great status. I mean, did you see the scramble on the second TD play that lasted about 12 seconds?! That's a lifetime on the field. KU was the team that was overrated - but still pretty good. Before the Mizzou game, they just didn't make mistakes. The Sooners will have their work cut out for them.

donfl Nov 26 07

Interesting scenario re Bo HC and Turner OC. Unfortunately don't think Turner will accept anything other than the top dog, don't blame him he has been tutoring for many years and IS a head coach now. Best scenario I see is Bo as HC retaining Watson as OC, bringing in Dave Rimington as AD, and letting Bo pick a DC. Don't know much about the other head coaches being considered, BUT and its a BIG BUT I think it is vital that whomever TO picks understands the need to connect with the Husker Nation. Of all the names I hear so far only Bo and Turner can relate to that. We have too many talented kids on our team to not be a competitive team. GBR

So that would make you in agreement with ze bop.

2001 Huskers, 'the real deal'.

I don't care who you are, that right there is FUNNY.

doombob Nov 26 07

Hey, I disagreed because both teams were good, but with their quarterback they deserved to be ranked what they were throughout the season. Was Oregon overrated when Dixon was on the field? No, they were right where they should be. If he had stayed healthy, they would have been in the National Championship Game. ONE PLAYER can make a WHOLE TEAM great. Just like ONE COACH can bring a WHOLE TEAM down.

ze bop Nov 26 07

Well, if Chase leads them to a dubya vs the Sooners, then I say that they are as deserving of the one spot as anybody else, though I think there are other hot teams right now--WV, USC, FL, OR(with Dixon) GA, for e.g.--that could take Mizzou 2 outta 3 games no prob.

Mizzou doesn't have enough D to stop the Sooners, though they've improved. Their spread will give OU some problems again, but no one has really solved defending the spread.
If OU really comes to play, they have clearly superior talent to beat Mizzou worse than the first time. I think that will happen.

Mizzou "#1"(filling in for now) 'til Sat. night.

2001 Huskers didn't deserve to play in the ND game, IMO.

*NC game*

huskerranger Nov 26 07

one thing that i would like to point out aside from hiring. is that mizzou and other big 12 teams have been hated since god knows when. i think the big 12 is the hardest conferance bar none. so lets at least support the big 12. minus maybe texas.

OU7times Nov 26 07

Ze, I wish I were as confident about OU winning against Mizzou. I'm not at all. The fact of OU being favored is "funny". I think MU will have to have a monumental meltdown (surpassing the last few years) to lose this game. My redictions on this blog have been rotten but this I am confident in. OU is lathargic on offense, they try to tackle the ball (very bad habits lately in C-football)instead of the player, they take the opposition lightly. This is nowhere near Stoops best team. I just think MU wants it more than OU and OU will go into the game thinking it's their "birth right" to win this game. I follow this team closely and will say MU by 10+. Mizzou has earned the right to be #1. HUSKERRANGER is right, we should suport the Big 12 no matter who is top dog. P.S. Congrats to "MO Purify", I was hard on you but you had a hell of a year on and off the field. You kept you nose clean and for that I am proud of you. As your hardest critic I want to say good luck in the NFL. He'll be a dandy.

scott Nov 26 07

Mizzou is pretty hot right now too....they have a great chance to be the Sooners.

TRN Nov 26 07

I really think Mizzou can beat OU. They have a lot of momentum comming into this game. they have not been ranked number one since 1960, and noone is really even giving them much chance in this game saying they are so over rated and dont deserve to be in this game. Right now Chase Daniel is playing better then any quarterback in college football. I am by far not a mizzou fan and really wanted kansas to beat them, but mizzou was clearly the better team, and deserve to be number one in the nation

BmaxBuffalo Nov 26 07

I can't understand why some of you think Turner Gill would come to Nebraska as the off coord. That just won't happen.. The only reason the AD at UB -University of Buffalo gave Turner permission was his great respect for him personally and as a head coach.Turner Gill has turned what used to be the worst program in the country around. Ub won one game in 2005, TWO IN 2006 AND 5 THIS YEAR .. THE MOST EVER SINCE GOING DIV 1 .. The fans are just starting to get into the games . Turner waited so long to be a head coach i just can't see him going backwards now.

If Not Nebraska then someone will give him another job at a BIG CONFERENCE SCHOOL. I just hope he stays long enough to get UB to their first winning season and first bowl game since D one Football came back to Buffalo.

James Moore Nov 26 07

OU7Times thanks for the classy and respectful comments for Nebraska football. The Mo Purify sound off is the best gesture of all. For all who thinks Missouri is overrated, they're not. They execute extremely well on offense, Daniel makes his throws, their skill players are dangerous and get the ball in space quite ofte, Coffman and Rucker (how did we not get Rucker?) are NFL tight ends who are dangerous seal blocks on slots out of the spread, and with Macklin dangerous on special teams as well. They're confident and playing their best ball at the right time of the year. Now, I despise everything about them and watching Pinkel on ESPN today was disgusting. BUT they are for real, THIS PARTICULAR YEAR. . .

I desperately want Oklahoma to win, but like OU7Times said the Sooners are not on full-tilt right now. He's been a little worried about his team for about a month, and he's objective, so it's something to take into account. Truthfully, IF Missouri is in the National Championship game I can't root for them. Kansas I would. Kansas State, no way. Oklahoma, of course. Texas, just can't do it. . .

Kiffin would be sweet. Bo Pelini too. IF we could keep Watson as Offensive Coordinator that would be a real coup. Like that guy a lot. We could keep the same scheme, tweak it and add the occasional spread look, but think about this. When you saw Castille what did you and everyone else (the opposing defense) think? Run. Lucky? Pass. First down? Can anyone say zone stretch? We got a little predictable. All you had to do was look at the substitutions and you had an idea what we were going to do. . .

Hit, hit, hit, hit this spring and next fall. Technique, technique, technique. College football is about teaching and building fundamentals. That's where Coach Callahan probably went astray (among other aspects). Damn injuries, spring ball HAS to be a version of Husker Fight Club to start turning things around.

The Count Nov 27 07

Is this corner Gary Pinkle. And In other corner Bob Stoops.

Both first class a-holes but Stoops can coach.

Oklahoma 37
Missouri 28

OU7,

I think any fan of HIS team is certainly more critical of and anxiety ridden about their team. Sure, Mizzou absolutely CAN win this game--if OU doesn't play well, i.e., commits bonehead mistakes.

Mizzou's main edge is Daniels, though it is an amazingly small advantage given the way rs freshman Bradford has played this year.
OU has a defense that can(and did) harrass and 'chase'/sack Daniels; I recall some 2 down linemen sets in that game that were effective, I think the OU coaches know they have the ability on the D line to more than hold their own. However, if they don't and Daniel's gets in his rhythm, it won't be easy.

OU's lb and db play is also up to the task.

Mizzou's D cannot stop the Sooners: Sooners can only stop themselves there. Really, once KU got over the deer in the headlights thing, they didn't have much problem scoring some points and gave Mizzou a run for their money toward the end.

Dude, to me OU has the #2 talent in the country(USC #1). They would've beaten TTech if Bradford didn't get bonked, and still shut them down and almost pulled it out in the second half. Though gashed some by the Pokes, OU basically dominated that game. CU game they beat themselves, FTMP.

I don't think MO is ready for this big of a stage just as KU wasn't ready last week. But, OU must come with the FIRE. If they do, they win by 20, o.k., maybe 14.

Mark my words, I called the last OU/Mizzou game spot on!

Mizzou is the only team I haven't rooted for this year(or maybe ever). EVEN Puffs I pulled for a few times. So I'm not inclined to get on the Mizzou bandwagon this week.

But objectively speaking, OU should win this game.
