Rojo Gets Off the Ride
For those accustomed to following Husker football online and in chat rooms, this week marked the exit of a major contributor to the discussions among fans. Rojo, a prolific poster at Huskerpedia’s bulletin board with well over 10,000 posts, decided to hang up the keyboard. Many of those posts involved a fair amount of time and research and helped inform the conversation about Husker football usually in a positive way. It seemed his mission to keep the Husker Nation behind the program.
In his words:
I used to get up early to research a little topic to put up for the day. I usually made it a positive post. As a retired teacher… I have the time, I had the passion.Nebraskans may be “the greatest fans in the world. They also have gossipy, negative, and critical tendencies---like most folks in a rural culture. It’s all part of that same crusty, likeable package.
But… “The constant drop of water wears away the hardest stone.
An environment can wear too. “Avoid negative people has been a motto of mine for years. I choose to apply it to cyberspace as well.
The plight of Rojo reminded me of another person I’ve admired, the late comedian Bill Hicks. Hicks had passion and often went against the grain. He felt that television worked to keep us from thinking, to spellbind us and that it was his job to break that spell. So in honor of our brother Rojo, I leave you with these remarks from Bill Hicks. He will be missed.

Bill Hick's meta-physical political philosophy aside, I appreciate you posting this Steve.
"Rojo" was a major influence on that board and on the opinions of many in Husker Nation, always sharing well-researched and positive thoughts.
For somebody with that positive mind set - and a 10,000 post history - to "get off the ride" says something a little scary about the amount of bile that is being slung online these days.
Husker fans need to get positive and get pulling in the same direction. Because the current mood is starting to scare off some really good folks.
Today, I toast (with my morning coffee) to Rojo. Get back on the ride. It's going to be a blast.

Couldn't have said it better, darren.
I'm really sick of all of the hate being slung toward Callahan & company. Yeah, they've pretty much failed as coaches. WE GET IT. Look toward the future, not dwell on the present.
Andrew Nov 08 07
I just feel sorry for Bill Callahan, guys just don't desreve to get treated this way. He came here and tried his best, and if being loyal is his worst fault, that is one more people should expire to have.
By Rojo, and I am sure there are more who will follow.

Great post, Steve. You've had me watching Bill Hicks stuff for the last half hour.
Bugeater Nov 08 07
@ Andrew -
Criticism comes with the territory. And if I made $1.75 mil a year like Loserhan does, I'm pretty sure I could learn to live with it, however bitter or personal it became.

It's one thing to have an opinion about a coach or coaches. It's another on how you present that opinion.
Fans that yell at coaches at games when they're leaving the field have no business being in that stadium. Yes, I'm calling those of you out. Don't go to another game. Give me your tickets. You're not a fan. I can't even use the term on here for you because it won't get posted.
I have no doubt the coaches are doing the best they can. But we all know that doing your best doesn't always give the best results. The NU coaching job isn't just coaching. It's about embracing the entire state, the REAL fans, the tradition, the former players and coaches, what that 'N' on the helmet has stood for for so many years. It's about the skull and crossbone mentality on defense, flying around because you don't want to let the guy down that lines up next to you. It's about getting tens of thousands of people to the spring game. It's not a business. This is OUR team.
What's done is done. Shut up, quit your whinin, and stop going to the games if you don't like what's going on. OR....get out and support your team. This goes way beyond this season. Give the younger players coming back something to believe in, something positive.
Alleluia, holy s#@!. Where's the Tylenol??

Scott,
Well said. Bugeater made my point for me, enough said. Nothing comes from negativity.

Great to see the coaches wives have chimed in. is this blog connected tot he delusional Big Red Board? Are you Hoss Train or Wild Wreck?
The Count Nov 08 07
Also I seem to recall that Rojo had no problem pissing on the grave of Frank Solich 4 years ago. So long Rojo you won't be missed.

Scott,
Another part of the problem is fans telling other fans that they're not fans. You want to be positive, then be positive. That includes your behavior towards other fans who aren't being positive. Take your own advice and shut up and quit whining about it.

"I have no doubt the coaches are doing the best they can."
First of all, that in itself is hilarious!
Go buy your own tickets ya cheap ass. Callahan is the biggest freak'n moron to set foot on Nebraska soil and he need's to go now! Billy is not one of those things you listed that a coach at Nebraska should be. If he has the right to sit at his press conference every week and consider me an idiot by thinking I might actually beleive the heep of crap he spits out, then by all means I have the right to call him an idiot.
I'm sorry if I hurt poor Billy Boy's feelings!
Do you need a tissue?

And there it is... The "divide" in Husker Nation lives and breathes here at BRN. This is *exactly* why Rojo hung up his keyboard, folks.
Seriously - Support the team. Or, don't. It's not complicated. Bitching doesn't make anything better.
For my part, I root for the name on the front of the jersey, and not the name on the back. That goes for coaches, too.
Or, maybe just consider this line from Hoosiers - "We appreciate you cheering for who we are, and not who we are not."
Scott Nov 09 07
Jon and Forever Red,
If you want someone to shut up then you're on the wrong website.
Thanks for putting words into my mouth and not reading everything I wrote. I'm sure people don't believe the heeps of crap that come out of your mouth either. You keep the tissue, looks like you need it more than I do. Oh yeah, your forgot this other sentence I wrote above, "But we all know that doing your best doesn't always give the best results."
I never said we couldn't be negative. I sit here thinking we probably won't win another game this year, on paper at least. But part of me hopes they can surprise a lot of people and win one of these last games if not both of them.
I never said Callahan was a good coach or that I think he should be given another year. I'm saying the coaches and players are trying but things are not going as planned. Giving a good effort can still get you beat badly, very badly.

I believe that all coaches give their best effort week in and week out, but like Forever Red said above, I think people are getting tired of the same crap coming out of the mouth of BC. He took EVERYTHING that Nebraska football stood for and just abandoned it like it meant nothing.
It's not like he came into a situation that was a losing program. We did happen to only win 5 NC's and have 78 Academic All-Americans, etc..............., before he came to NU.
Nebraska stands for family, tradition, and home. Those are just part of the reasons why at 18 I left the sunny shores of So. Cal to go to a place such as Nebraska. Around the country that's what Nebraska is known for. I was born and raised in So. Cal, but I desired to be a Nebraskan. I now live in NC, but everyday I desire to be back in the fold of the state of Nebraska. And that's what I think BC NEVER understood.
Do I root for the name on the front first and foremost, you can bet your sweet ass I do. And so does every other one of us. But, if us fans see a major wrong going on in the program, we sure as hell have every right to speak our minds. This isn't Iran. Do I agree that some idiots like to take it too far, yes. But I am willing to bet most of those posts are by young , immature writers where that is normal. But the more seasoned people have learned to tone it down, just as they do in real life.
BC is a big boy and i'm sure he will land on his feet, quite comfortably I might add. I have travelled all over this country and RESPECT is the first word that came to peoples' minds when they thought of the program. Now, some say we have sold out and became like everyone else. BC's arrogance and condensending attitude towards the non, high dollar donater is so transparent, that we are tired of it. I never like to see anyone get fired, because that is someone's life, but if you are not doing the job that you are paid to do then it is time to go.
Scott Nov 09 07
cvldfg,
Might be one of the better post I've read. I agree when you talk about the "crap" coming out of BC's mouth, and it also has to do with what doesn't come out of his mouth. I've never really heard him take responsibility as a coach or coaching staff in any of the losses. It's always about missed assignments or someone being out of position and that we have correctable mistakes. Just once I'd like to hear him say that the coaching staff may be the ones responsible.
Darren Nov 09 07
The Count - No we are not affiliated with Big Red Board. Though, I don't think they are delutional, by any stretch. There are many good opinions on that board.
No, we're not Train Wreck or Wild Hoss. We're Steve, Darren, Jason, and Renny. We put our names on stuff for good reason.
Thanks for coming by BRN. Hang in with us if you are up for reasonable discussion. If not...
The Count Nov 09 07
I like this blog. I thought it was reasonable. I don't find excuse making for a 4-8 team reasonable.

As a life long Husker fan, what I find most disappointing about this season is how some of the fans have reacted to it.
I am not defending Coach Callahan or the rest of the staff. In fact, I'm convinced that they will have to go at the end of the season.
In my view, it is simply unNebraskan to permit your anger to result in calling the coaches names or harrassing their kids at school or jeering at the players on the sidelines (as Mo Purify reports has happened).
I don't think that there is anything wrong with being angry or disappointed or expressing opinions, including whether or not the coaches should be fired. But, I really wish that we could do it in a way that elevated the discussion and respected everyone's basic human dignity. Coach Callahan is not evil incarnate. He may well be a lousy coach, at least right now. But, it debases us all to resort to crass name calling.
I wish everyone could speak about the coaches and players as though they were in the room with their spouses, children and grandchildren surrounding them, rather than how some fans refer to them anonymously on various boards.
This season's trials have transformed some of us into "common" fans. We used to be uncommon in our courtesy and respect for everyone --- coaches, opposing coaches, opposing fans, players --- I'm afraid we're losing that. And, that is what disappoints me the most.
This is my first post on any board in well over a year --- maybe two. I "pulled a Rojo" a long time ago. My two cents is simply that I wish Husker fans could resume treating everyone with respect and consideration regardless of the coaches' job performance, the quality of the play, or the opinions expressed. That's it.
cvldfg Nov 09 07
Thanks Scott. BTW BC hasn't produced/recruited 1 Academic All-American.
cvldfg Nov 09 07
Because of the BC era, I have had to defend the program with these facts:
1) 812-326-41 (.704) (only 1 of 4 teams with 800+ wins)
2) 289 consecutive sellouts (NCAA record)
3) 46 conference championships (NCAA record)
4) 43 straight bowl games (NCAA record)
5) 40 consecutive winning seasons (NCAA record)
6) 33 consecutive 9+ wins/season (NCAA record)
7) 92 Academic All-Americans (106 total, some twice)(NCAA record)
8) 3 Heisman Trophy winners
9) 3 Walter Camp Trophy winners
10) 1 Maxwell Trophy winner
11) 1 Dave Rimington Award winner (btw, he played @ NU)
12) 1 Davey O'Brien Award winner
13) 1 Dick Butkus Award winner
14) 1 Johnny Unitas Award winner
15) 4 Lombardi Trophy winners
16) 8 Outland Trophy winners
17) Oh ya, BTW--5 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS!!!!!
