Huskers Give Fans Reason to Smile

No one saw this coming. Sure a win over Kansas State seemed possible. Not likely, but possible. But 73 points? A 42-point margin of victory? Seven touchdown passes for Ganz? Three touchdown catches by Hardy?

Coupled with Colorado’s loss to Iowa State, the Thanksgiving weekend contest now becomes a lot more interesting. You can’t say the Huskers have no chance. The Huskers beat Iowa State. Kansas State beat Colorado by 27. The game in Boulder is very winnable for a Husker team that has been deeply flawed this season.

But even if things don’t go NU’s way in Boulder, a home win over Kansas State felt good. A big win over the team lead by Josh Freeman, the player who defected from Nebraska late in the recruiting game felt really good. Seeing NU look like a team that can dominate its opponent felt right. Watching Ron Prince leaving in defeat felt so right.

The 2007 season will not be remembered as a feel good season. But for one cool day in November, the Huskers exploded against one of its least loved opponents. For the seniors and all the players, the coaches and the fans Saturday was a day to enjoy.

Wasn't that fun?!!

That was fun!!! I would have taken a one point win (or maybe even a close loss after last week) but this was just more than I could have imagined! Great win for the players! Now hopefully we can use this momentum going into Boulder, GO BIG RED!

omarhuskerfan Nov 10 07

Awesome. 702 yards of offense.

That is nebraska football. I think that callahan might of, on given a nebraska like preformance.

Ganz for big 12 player of the week.

Mike Nov 10 07

That was the West Coast offense, thats Nebraska fans have been waiting to see. The Defense played lights out, and finally it seems that the Nebraska Tradition has been resorted.(Did you see the former players on the sideline, it was a packed house) Go Tom Oz, and Go Big Red.

Bill in Iowa Nov 10 07

Unbelievable! Looked like a championship team. Very agressive D, good pursuit, D-line pressured, offense...flawless, mistake free football. Can't say enough.

One question...Ganz undoubtedly won a big tribute game for the seniors, but did he also win one for Callahan? Is this a game that proves a seasoned QB in Callahan's system can really make this offense humm? Should coach C get one more season with Ganz at the head of the controls?

The Count Nov 10 07

That was F'ing sweet. It doesn't make up for the past 5 weeks...but it makes the next 2 much much sweeter.

Ya, it was wonderful to watch NU dominate again. Yet, it raised some questions in my mind. How does a head coach not see the potential in a QB that throws for nearly 1,000 yards in two games? Did NU start the wrong QB all season long? And, where was this defense all year? Perhaps seeing the boot coming towards your hind quarters gets the attention of some coaches. I still see heads rolling after the season.

Was just a joint effort on behalf of the rest of north big 12 teams to try n keep Calli around.
No wonder Prince was in a grumpy mood this week, he was blackmailed into laying down for Calli so the other North teams can try n keep him around another yr.

lol...relax, I'm kidding people.

Nice to see players actually giving some effort for a change, and dang Ganz can play.

He missed a few totally uncovered recievers, but on both plays still threw completions to covered guys, so can't complain to much.

But still, doesn't even come close to changing my mind about Calli packing his bags.

Nice, nice win Huskers. That was fun! It is all making sense now. Callahan was just too stuborn, or dedicated, to Keller. Make no mistake, I feel this coaching crew has got to go. Smugness is a big reason for me. Gans was fantastic and OMAR was right, he should be Big 12 player (offensive) this week, no question. The funny part is that NU was 7 point dogs in the game. Relax and enjoy it cause you/they certainly deserve it. WELCOME BACK!!!

Does anyone know what exactly the wire report means when they say:

"Ganz's seven TD passes -- three to Frantz Hardy -- were the most since 2001 Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch threw for five against Iowa State in 2000."

The Count Nov 11 07

The Wire Reports are a little wrong. Crouch threw five TD's against Iowa in 2000.

Nebr - M Davison 31 pass from Crouch (Brown kick)
Nebr - Wistrom 12 pass from Crouch (Brown kick)
Nebr - M Davison 43 pass from Crouch (Brown kick)
Nebr - Wistrom 10 pass from Crouch (Brown kick)
Nebr - Wistrom 4 pass from Crouch (Brown kick)

Husker Fan from The Other Side of the World Nov 11 07

The Wire Reports was exactly correct. Take the phrase "2001 Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch" as a single item. In other words, "since Eric Crouch, which won the Heisman Trophy in 2001, threw for five against Iowa State in 2000."

Ouch, I hooked up with some Boston Bruin apparel yesterday and realized I'm superbly outfitted to be a Miz-zoo fan. Salvation Army here I come...

So, looks like OZ's revised memo to Calli this week worked: "....70+ points AGAINST, not ALLOWED--that's NE tradition...!"

That game was so amusing I almost broke my funny bone!

Joe 'Montana' Ganz. Joey, the Joe-ster, The Joe-meister, Joey-rooski, the Joey-nator!

Where has this team been all year? Albeit, Mild-Acts put the 'Q' in quirky and they run a vanilla O that Coz can scheme for, but this game was just what the shrink ordered for Husker Nation.

It was awesome seeing Freeboy on his Keester and those deer-in-the-headlight eyes and Prince gazing into a huge can of unsportsman-like WHOOP-A$$!

WOOHOO!

Like the Wizard of OZ says: "there's no place like HOME"; that is, the 'Home' of Big Red traditional blowouts!

ze bop Nov 11 07

I think Calli has to realize you can't score all your points for 4 games in ONE game....spread 'em out!

ze bop Nov 11 07

How many 'stars' did The Joey-nator bring in as a recruit...uh, hmmmmm.....?

Personally, in my more rational moments, I've tended to argue that Calli has a great O mind and if he could get HIS players in his system for 3-4 years his WCO could be a juggernaut. I'm supported in this observation by the one and only Zac T, so I rest my case.

Obviously, the huge problems this year have been on the defensive side of the ball: Big Red has been killed by anything resembling the spread/spread option/read option--yada, yada--mainly for lack of any D line surge(KSU had no such surge yesterday, BTW). Coz is truly suspect as a play by play guy, but to his mild defense(no pun intended), I don't see too many DC's as having the key to stopping the spread.

If NE beats the Puffs, goes to and wins a bowl game, AND Calli makes a public and impassioned, tearful plea to Husker Nation that he 'wanna stay here, pretty please!', maybe they'll bring him back in '08.

But, at least 70% of Husker Fan would be totally p.o.'d about that and I, for one, don't know if I could stand another year of verbal crucifiction of the coaching staff on the blog boards(as if they mattered).

Winning cures all ailments, so if he was brought back and they kept winning, even Anti-Calli Fan could be persuaded, I suppose.

ze bop Nov 11 07

p.s., I really don't think we should jump on Keller because Ganz is lighting it up right now. Keller is an excellent QB and maybe could have done what Joey Montana did yesterday.

Ganz has the mobility factoid which differentiates him and maybe makes him a better fit in the WCO.

Ganz will have some bad games, so let's just keep it REAL.....:)

Scott Nov 11 07

Does anyone know if zebop enjoyed the game yesterday?

That game was fun. Plain and simple...FUN.

cvldfg Nov 11 07

I hear a lot of "pundits" saying "why wasn't Joe starting all year" and "this is what NU fans have been waiting for on offense". Listen, it wasn't the offense you "pundits", it has been the defense. Our offense has been putting up a winning amount most weeks, but when the "D" is giving up 40, 50 or 70 in some weeks no offense can win week in and week out. We still gave up 31pts yesterda! That should be the alarm sounding, not JOEY.

cvldfg Nov 11 07

In a perfect Husker world.................

Bo comes back as Head Coach and runs the "D" and Callahan comes back as Offensive Coordinator. And like most programs only the HC is allowed to speak to the media. I would accept that.

Only in a perfect Husker world...........

Shane Nov 11 07

What the report says still doesn't make sense to me. Ganz threw for 7, it says Crouch threw for 5. So how is Ganz's count the best since Crouch? It seems to me that Ganz might have had the best throwing day for a Nebraska QB since before Crouch, but I'm not sure.

There's no place like HOME.
There's no place like HOME.
There's no place like HOME.

Thanks I needed that!

We all needed some fun, uplifting football from this group of players. Kudos to the boys.

No it wasn't exactly correct go to huskerpedia and look it up. Crouch threw for 5 TD's against Iowa not Iowa State.
