ESPN: Bo Pelini to NU

Less than a week after Bill Callahan was removed as Nebraska's head coach, it appears NU's interim athletic director Tom Osborne is set to name a replacement. ESPN's Pat Forde is reporting that Bo Pelini will be named the Cornhusker head coach early next week.

Forde's report claims confirmation from multiple sources, but does not name them. Pelini is currently serving as LSU's defensive coordinator. The Tigers are set to face Tennessee in tomorrow's SEC title game. Neither NU nor LSU has made any official comments.

Pelini has ties to the NU program, as he held the same job at NU in 2003. And, he served as NU's interim head coach for the Alamo Bowl, following Frank Solich's dismissal.

Pelini has been noted as a frontrunner for the job since the announcement that Callahan's contract would not be renewed. Turner Gill has been reported as the other finalist for the job. NU would be Pelini’s first head coaching job.

Wow, as tight lipped as Tom has been I'm suprised that this news actually leaked. Pelini is the man, I hope this actually pans out.

GBR!

He'll get plenty more chances against those pesky spread formations. I'd really like to see him retain the offensive coaches, but I assume he's going to "fight fire with fire" and hire a spread option guy to run the offense. Somebody, someday, is going to solve the (so far) unsolvable spread option, from Nebraska's standpoint. Pelini might as well get a crack, after 5 full seasons studying college offenses.

Also, assuming expectations haven't changed, Osborne must be confident Nebraska won't "concede the conference" with Pelini handling things.
I like it!

Well, I guess 'Mick Richards' was right after all: those 'fantasy' guys know their stuff.

Anyway, I'm definitely rooting for LSU tomorrow--GO BOP!

As far as the spread, I've said a million times it's pretty much unstoppable UNLESS your D is very well coached and athletically SUPERIOR across the board, especially in the line. But these spread Os are getting pretty stout with their O lines: note TTech has some pretty huge mofos up front.

BO will have to get stellar D recruits and I totally look forward to THAT! I have confidence in his ability to coach them, well, along with the new DC(Tenuda???).

Well, it's not an absolute done deal as of 12a ET tonight. Pelini supposedly denying Forde's report(See LJS blog).

But it'll probably be him.

I guess BOP didn't deny it in his quote.
