HUSKER UP: Texas

Comments 6 comments so far by

The HUSKER UP series of posts is designed to get fans fired up and help them get their Husker mojo on as the weekend approaches. At the start of the year, this was a week most Husker fans pointed to a big clash with the mighty Longhorns. Now, with NU sitting at 4-4 putting these posts up each Friday is starting to feel a little like a moot point. And then I thought...screw 'em. I'm a Husker fan, all day every day. I'm sure there are people like me who need to feel good too. So, for this edition of HUSKER UP, we seek wisdom from Bob Devaney, get a rallying cry from Dido (no really...Dido), and take a peek at Pelini's defense.

Wisdom of the Bob Father
The fine folks over at Big Red Board have a treasure trove of quotes. When faced with fan unrest and potential coaching change, I culled out these gems from the late, great Bob Devaney. Enjoy...

I know the fans are with me, win or tie.

You're not dead until they bury you.

You can take those two touchdowns and stick them up your ass.

No White Flag
It is sick that I turn to chic music like Dido for inspiration these days. But, seriously, the lyrics to her hit "White Flag" correctly typify my mood. Here is the chorus:

Well I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be

If it helps, feel free to imagine those sung with a kick ass guitar part and a great drum beat. But, I'm in love with NU football...and always will be. I will go down with this ship.

AV Club Presents: Bo Pelini
As NU fans brace for coaching staff turnover, Bo Pelini's name remains on everyone's lips. So, let's take a look at the LSU defense he leads. Here is a nice piece produced by CSTV. Perhaps it offers a glimmer of hope for what the Blackshirts could be again.

Ah...that would be nice to see dressed in black. In the meantime NU faces Texas. Wouldn't it be nice to stick it to the Longhorns in a year when NU supposedly doesn't have a prayer? I think so. GOOOOO BIIIIIIIIG REEEEED.

Cue the band...

What, no Bjork songs to go to?

Great post! Go Huskers!

To quote me, "I have never predicted a Husker loss, and I never will."

Nebraska 28, Texas 27

I'm praying for a 2006 NU, A&M type game all over again! But to tell you the truth, I'd be happy if we could just beat the spread.

Aye, aye, sir!

Just please, don't EVER change the cream colored helmet and the block N. You can remove the red stripe down the middle if you want.

The identity of the team will change when the identity of the fans change. And not until then.
This team has momentarily lost it's physical idenity- crucial to it's future success.
Whether Callahan can restore that, or will be given another chance to restore it, doesn't look too promising.
This is "my" team, though. My only team, in any sport, at any level. As opposed to a "Sox" fan taking in an interest in the "Pats," although they're entitled to that. Their teams, their region.

It's been a month short of 6 years since the "wheels fell of the cart" as Frank put it. The "wheels" still haven't been put back on correctly and while Nebraska was, as it turns out, overrated and still gets attention now, I'd rather the team just be put in the garage, until it's ready to win on the fast track.

I support Callahan as much as I supported Frank. I'll support a new coach the same way, when the time comes. "My team," my coach.
Don't love spread offenses, though.
I guess I'd get used to it.....

GM,

Hope you're doing alright in SD, take care of yourself out there.

As for Big Red, this has not been a good season, in fact, it's been unimaginabley &%$@! This week has particularly &%$@ as we've lost Gabbert, Gray, and the friggin' Horns took down our vaunted WVB team 3-ZIP!(problem there is that TX looks like they have a better VB team).

Husker mojo is nonexistent, the team has fallen apart at the seams, and the D is stuck in 'prevent' mode--that is, they play in such a way that prevents the team from winning any games.

I will be sad to see Calli get the boot at season's end, as I like the his WCO when it's clicking. His mini regime has by and large been enjoyable for me to watch, but there's no way in h$%ll they'll keep him around given the ugliness and number of losses so far and still to come--including this weekend(TX 52-Red 13). Also, the fan rebellion would be extremely ugly, more divided; just wouldn't work at all.

Husker Fan at large harkens a return to smash mouth(which we still have BTW), and all I can invision is Navy or Smurfs or something like that--run, run, run, hope you don't fall behind.

Actually my dream team would have a lights out D and win every game 2 or 3 to zero: keep it simple, dudes, go for the goose egg.

Can't say I'll be able to watch tomorrow's game beyond the 1st half of the 1st quarter, but I'll give it a shot.

I'm pretty depressed about losing Gabbert in particular since that guy's going to be a great one and would have been awesome in Calli's O. As it is, looks like he'll be in Coach Unipolar's spread thingy, which, to me, is a waste of talent. Grey going to Coach Turtleneck Pants is about the stupidist thing I've heard in awhile--like going from the S*&ckTown to S*&ckierTown. Go to friggin' Ohio St. or something , dude--for god's sake!

So 'Dido'(whoever that is) has gone down with the ship of love, but this is far worse than that--it's Big Red(not intramurals!)--and we have no choice in the matter......

I do have the Sox and Pats and the vastly overrated Eagles(I suppose) to cheer for out here in leaf land, but it just ain't the same--I'm not 'imprinted'.

(whisper): "keep it real."

Oh my God!!! The Dido is too much. You guys are bananas. But besides the spot-on assessments provided daily this dose of humor makes this site tops when you can get a laugh like that. Well I had an interesting Friday being that ESPN Classic showed the first innagural Big 12 Championship Game (the day I began to hate Texas like Duke Basketball & more important ended our 3-peat chances in 96). If there are football gods they will grant me a nice dose of revenge karma by giving us a win in Austin. Texas is behind all my worst Husker moments until Colorado 2001 (HATED even typing it let alone having to recall it). My heart of hearts tells me that we will win before the end of the year & why not think tomorrow? If we lost Gabbert, well it is disappointing but I still think Patrick Witt could be special. The spring game was an impressive performance (I believe he was only 17 at the time) and he was not going to be a career backup. Also if he's gonna go to Missouri I have a feeling we're gonna make him regret that about-face sooner than he thinks. By the time Daniel's gone Nebraska will be in MUCH better shape (Prediction -- Order Restored, remember we DO have talent). Gray, well it'd be nice to have him but IB is not a position of concern (Castille, Helu & Wilson). Good luck at Notre Dame. To the defense, stay at home, stay in your lanes, and believe in the guy next to you. To the offense, if you stay focused you CAN move the ball on this defense. To the team as a whole, that N is as special as anything in existance in college football. Be proud & be conscious that YOU ARE SOMEBODY!!! GO BIG RED!!!

P.S. doombob -- I'll never wake up thinking we're gonna lose too. I like that, somebody else like me out there. Wear my Nebraska hat & jersey every Saturday we play out here in Washington, DC..

Pelini seems a bit different than when he was at NU. He seems much more pollished. I think someone is going to get a great head coach some day. I wish him the best where ever he ends up because his hard work has obviously paid off. Guys like that deserve a chance. He is a family man much like Urban Meyer is, so you know the players will always run through a wall for him.
