He Said She Said

What would Oklahoma State week be without some fun at Mike Gundy’s expense? Unless you’ve been living under a rock you've seen Gundy's tirade about an article in the Oklahoman suggesting that a lack of toughness is the reason Bobby Reid lost his starting job earlier this year.

If you only watch the clip or the clip and the author’s defense of the column, it’s easy to see Gundy as a cartoon character. But when you actually go back and read the article, you can see why he was so steamed. The story is built on rumors. The Kansas City Star’s Jason Whitlock (who’s often the voice of reason when controversies arise) offered some good commentary on how and why the article crossed the line.

But the Washington Post’s Sally Jenkins also points out how unprofessional that kind of tirade is. While much of the public was on Gundy’s side, the fact is that kind of behavior has no place in a public forum. If it’s unfair to call Reid soft for allowing his mother to feed him chicken, it’s also unfair to attack a columnist for not being a parent. It may sound sexist, but there’s also something that seems especially wrong about a man screaming in the face of a woman, who’s just trying to do a job (albeit somewhat poorly).

But rather that delve further into the Mike Gundy versus the media issue, here’s the youtube clip you may not have seen, inspired by the Bud Light Real Men of Genius ads:

The moral of the story: there's alot of b.s. written in sport's journalism--BEWARE!

I have absolutley no problem with Gundy going off for the whole world to see. Reading between the lines, it looked to me like his 'over reaction' was based on the cumulative effects of having to deal with bogus press--and now message boards--on a weekly basis. The actual people involved in the DOING of sports--i.e., coaches and players--are at the constant prey of media 'professionals'.
Personally, I didn't find the article particularly offensive, but the fact that it was based on mostly here say, info taken out of context, and msg. bd. innuendo, gives me no reason to blame Gundy for his socalled unprofessionalism. So she's a woman, get over it. If she can't take the heat, especially when she's writing b.s., she's in the wrong line of work. Really, I guess Reid's mother is trying to hit her with some sort of libel suit; good for her, even though it'll never stick.

Fact is, the way in which he spoke out publically sends a strong msg. to all journalist that they better have their act together when they're writing.

Go Gundy, put it to DA MAN!

I think I know who we should try to get to replace BC.

Anonymous,

"Oh, he'll be a head coach someday," said Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Barrett Ruud, one of Pelini's top protégés. "I'm actually surprised that it hasn't happened already."

Why has it not happend yet? Is there something we don't know?

We're in a time, most likely not to change much, that people are trying to make a name for themselves with over the top "takes" ala Romey.
Just like how Jim Everett got "up close and personal" with Romey over his "Chris Evert" smack, this reporter needed to be publicly checked in an almost similiar manner.
I think Coach goes off on any man too, for cracking on one of his kids, like she did.

Reporters and columnists sometimes need to distinguish between commentary and "popping off." Anybody can pop off.
Popping off can sometimes get you unwanted "face time."
Unless, you're angling for a guest spot on "Sports Reporters."

The thing is, you couldn't tell--I couldn't anyway--that Gundy's rant was directed to a man or woman until it was later pointed out that it was a chic.

Pelini will probably get hired as an HC somewhere at the end of '07. He's famous now. Too bad we couldn't get him as a DC again and just pay him alot of $$$. I'd take him as a HC, though, if it came to that--which I doubt it will. I still think Calli is a very good coach though. I like the offense.
