Big 12 Roundtable - Rise of the North Edition

Were Saturday's games a sign that the Big 12 North may be on its way back?

It could be, but at the same time you can't read to much into one weekend. We've seen too many teams around the country already go Jekyll and Hyde.

How seriously do we take the hot starts at Mizzou and Kansas?

The Illinois win is looking better and better for Missouri so you have to give them some credit for avoiding the epidemic of upsets we've seen so far this year. Kansas has still played no one, so much like Oklahoma you want to wait and see how they perform against Big 12 teams. Neither team will go 14-0, that's for sure.

Pick one team from the opposite division that you truly hate, and say why; follow this up by picking another team from the opposite division that you don't mind pulling for, and say why.

Geez, I don't hate anybody but Texas does get under my skin. The horns, the colors, the slickster Mack Brown (who put his own name in the official Texas football web site) are hard to like though you have to respect how much they've won. OU dominated the Big 8 for many years and so I'd rather see it do the same in the Big 12 South than an old SWC team. It sort of validates the Big 8's former greatness.

The NCAA has enacted a rule allowing you to bring back one senior that graduated last year to play for your team for the rest of the season. Would you do it? And if so, who?

Adam Carriker could really help this team. So could Brandon Jackson. Neither would be missed a whole lot by their pro teams right now anyway.

Rank the conference teams

  1. OU - You can't write off the Sooners after one bad half.
  2. Kansas State - This could change dramatically but Auburn's shown they can still play with the big boys and a win in Austin is big.
  3. Missouri - A lot of offensive firepower.
  4. Nebraska - See Missouri.
  5. Texas - How the mighty have fallen.
  6. Texas Tech - See Missouri.
  7. Texas A&M - Could easily be 3-2 now.
  8. Kansas - Need to see this team face real competition.
  9. Oklahoma State - I'm sure Gundy would say, "THAT'S NOT TRUE!!!"
  10. Colorado - Saturday felt more like an upset than an indication of what this team will be.
  11. Baylor - The Bears don't always have a winning record this late in the year.
  12. Iowa State - One win in five games.

How can you have Kansas 8th in your conference rankings, yet have Kansas 14th in the country in your BlogPoll ballot, trailing only Missouri?

Husker Mike,

That crossed my mind as I filled it out, nevertheless this is the way I went about it. In a national poll where there's so little "cross-pollenation" team-to-team and so many seemingly random outcomes so far that people earn their spots on the basis of wins and losses (and scores) in the national poll. If you think I'm too kind to Kansas, Sagarin's purely statistical predictor ranking has them 12th!

But for this one, I was throwing out the records (especially since teams like Missouri and Kansas are 0-0 in conference) and said "who would you not want to meet in a dark alley (or neutral field)". OU had one bad quarter, otherwise they've looked great. KSU not only blew out Texas but hung with Auburn (who in turn beat Florida). Missouri's win over Illinois doesn't look too shabby right now, nor does their 4-0 record. Call me a homer but I love the Husker offense and special teams. Texas has looked bad in three games, but have only lost once. Tech is Sagarin's 23rd team in part because they put up pinball offensive numbers. A&M looks worse than they did a year ago with the toughest part of their schedule still ahead. KU's put up numbers against nobodies so far, I need to see them win a conference game on the road before I believe. This Saturday could be that game. Losing at Troy is almost unforgivable for OSU. I probably should have put CU ahead of OSU. Baylor is clearly better than ISU and likely worse than everyone else.

Congrats to the Big 12 North. This is really shaping up into a mostly awesome group. Im afraid that as far as the South, OU has been exposed, im afraid, and probably is still a better team than Texas (we'll find out Saturday). The conference champ will be a North team, I'm quite sure. I still see OU representing the South and probably against either of the Kansas teams. KU and KSU are shaping up to be formidable foes for Nebraska. Can you believe that the season will be half over (already) on Saturday evening?
