Dillard’s Blackshirt Bodes Well

While the talk of 2007 (aside from quarterbacks) has been about the four new starters on the defensive line, you’d expect that next year the talk will be about the three new starters at linebacker. Or is it two?

Phillip Dillard became one of only four players to earn a Blackshirt as a reserve this year. The other three, Andre Jones, Zack Bowman, and Lance Brandenburgh all have starting experience. That means Dillard must have really shown something to warrant the Blackshirt.

If he’s a starter in the eyes of the coaches, it means that next season (after three years in the program) he can step right in to start as if he had been all season. That answers the question at one linebacker spot, at least, that was in question for 2008.

Then again, we all knew he was probably the best returning linebacker. The big question will be at the outside positions because right now the depth chart shows a lot of inexperience behind the graduating seniors there.

He knows what it's about, now. He's had to rehab, then compete. It would be great for Corey to have someone whom he can alternate with.
Finally, the team has depth. For the starters, it means they have to compete and show it on the field. But, it gives them a breather, too.
That has been lacking, especially of defense, for how long? Too long.
I think Cosgrove goes "release the hounds" once again, this year. Like '05, just with better players (and more experienced) and more depth.
More consistent 3 and outs!
