Cameron Meredith Commits

These days, Husker fans don’t get excited by three-star prospects that often. But defensive end recruit Cameron Meredith is a commit that’s worth celebrating.

First of all, just like pitchers, you can never have too many good defensive linemen. So he fills both a short term (depth) and longer term (starter) need. Filling positions of need is essential in recruiting.

Next, he’s got the speed and frame you look for. He’s two inches taller and only five pounds lighter than Barry Turner was when he committed. And we saw how well Turner was able to grow into a prototypical defensive end.

Finally, look who else wanted him. As a California kid there were Pac-10 schools and WAC schools that offered him (like Oregon, Arizona, and Boise State). But the one that really catches your eye is Oklahoma. The Sooners are loaded on defense year after year after year. If they want a kid, it’s because he’s got something. So if they want Meredith, we should want him. Armando Murillo is a perfect example. The Huskers grabbed him from the Sooners last year and now he’s won the starting cornerback job (over a returning starter) before playing his first game at NU.

So you probably won’t see a ton of hype around Meredith over the next year or two. But, by 2009 it will begin to be apparent why OU and Nebraska were in on this guy early.

I'm glad to see Cam Meridith decided to go with the Big Red. A college with a great football history, but a little disapointed that he didn't choose BSU.
A Boise fan, however bigger fan of Cameron.
