Bad News Season Mild (Knock on Wood)

snipshot_e4x9df4wi68.jpg This week marks the beginning of fall practices for Nebraska. It also marks the unofficial end of the “bad news season” in college football. That’s the period between the end of spring practices and the beginning of fall practices where the only actual “news” outside of recruiting is generally bad.

Generally speaking, this off-season was pretty benign.

There were the usual academic casualties from the recent recruiting class. But that’s not only expected, it’s also sort of necessary. That is, the coaches sign more players than there are scholarships to offer knowing that a few won’t be able to begin in the fall.

There were of course, Maurice Purify’s legal problems and subsequent suspension. But having arguably your most irreplaceable player miss a single early home game when a much longer suspension seems possible doesn’t seem all that bad.

And the departure of Craig Roark was unfortunate but hardly debilitating.

But (knock wood) things have gone pretty well. The major injuries (like Zack Bowman’s) seem to be healing on schedule. Nebraska will now enter the regular season no worse than they entered the off-season. And if you don’t think that’s good news, ask an Oklahoma fan how their summer went.

I curse myself for writing this. If you hadn't heard, it's now out that Hunter Teafatiler (a tight end) was busted for DWI. Apparently, it's not the first time for him either. The team is hardly deep at that position so it's not easy to dismiss either. Doh!
