2007 Opponent Preview…Texas Tech

snipshot_e4qb3g2erhv.jpg While the chances of Nebraska facing Texas Tech seem remote, it’s not impossible (like a Baylor championship game appearance would be). The Red Raiders will have a good offense. They always do. But with only five returning starters from a defensive unit that finished eighth in the conference in points allowed, it seems unlikely they’ll have a championship caliber team.

The Red Raiders have shown that they can hang 30 points on just about anyone. Tech should cruise through a soft nonconference slate but open their conference schedule at Oklahoma State. After that they play host to Iowa State and Texas A&M. The Raiders beat all three teams a year ago so a 7-0 start is not inconceivable. Next comes Missouri who beat Tech soundly in Lubbock a year ago. The Raiders then get Colorado at home, a team that shocked them in Boulder a year ago. After a trip to Baylor, they must go to Texas and finish their season at home against Oklahoma.

The schedule sort of makes you think that 5-3 might be the best they could hope for in the Big 12 but a few breaks and a 6-2 Tech team could sneak into the Big 12 championship game for the first time. Not that you’d want to bet on it. A 3-5 finish or even 2-6 would seem possible in the conference. But even at 2-6 the Red Raiders would be bowl eligible (assuming a 4-0 start) so chances are it will be a typical Tech season. That is eight or nine wins and a non-BCS bowl.

Will this be the situation, where the school "gets" the coach and the coach "gets" the school and they live happily ever after?
If not, then the clock could be ticking on Leach remaining with the team. When you look on the outside and see a coach succeed for a time then stagnate or regress (over the course of 7-8 years) the school clips him. Which I've always thought was ridiculous.
T-Tech has been decent for some time. Spike Dykes was a good, fun Coach. But, it would be ill advised to let Leach go for a different job, or let him go altogether.
That type of situation, like with Kansas and Missouri, seems in place and it really shouldn't be.
Would even a "legend of the game" type coach turn these teams into National title contenders?
