2007 Opponent Preview…Oklahoma State

snipshot_e418t8xobt8j.jpg You could put all of Oklahoma State’s wins over Nebraska in Lincoln on a 6 hour VHS tape and still have 3 hours to spare. It was 1961 when the Cowboys came to Lincoln (before even VHS was available) and beat the Huskers 14-6, the only time they’ve ever done it. While history doesn’t define the future (if not, how could you explain Bill Snyder’s success at Kansas State), some trends can be hard to break.

The Cowboys will come to Lincoln after opening the season at Georgia and taking a pounding (physically at least) at Texas A&M just prior to the game with Nebraska. So they likely would be 4-2 (or perhaps 3-3 if they lose a home date to Texas Tech). That leads you to believe there won’t be a huge Cowboy cheering section in Memorial Stadium.

Like the Huskers, the Cowboys will replace their entire defensive line. That’s from an OSU defense that finished tenth in the Big 12 in points allowed. With the Huskers in midseason form, OSU will have to find a way to force stops. Offensively, things look much better for the Cowboys as they bring back seven starters including quarterback Bobby Reid, running back Dantrell Savage, and wide receiver Adarius Bowman. They’ll also have standout return man Perrish Cox.

So expect the Cowboys to be a tough out for the Huskers, but with their history of futility in Lincoln you’d still expect the home team to get it done.

Sure to be an entertaining game!
Hopefully, not too entertaining.
The most interesting part of the "Boys" is their Coach Mike Gundy and "the Benefactor" T. Boone Pickens. I remember Gundy's playing career, I just don't think I saw him play against Nebraska. But he's got an interesting offense and would probably be favored in Stillwater again.

I'm reminded of what Tom Osborne used to say, almost every year before the Okie St. game. To paraphrase, "their first string is as good as anybody in the conference, they just have trouble with depth".
Seems to be just as true 30 years later.

Maybe there won't be a bunch of cowboy fans because the game is in NEBRASKA

Or, maybe it means that Cowboy fans don't travel in numbers, especially with possibly haven been "bloodied" by their schedule, up to the Nebraska game. I think that's what Steve is saying.

Seems obvious, to me.

Of all conference foes, the Pokes scare me the most, maybe moreso than TX. Bobby Reid and Adarius Bowman can be devastating if they get on a roll. I think we have the better team--I think we did last year as well--but we have to bring it for 4 qtrs. Home field edge big time:

Keep in mind the Huskers play Missouri at Columbia the week before. They, too, could be beaten up physically. The Cowboys are a program on the rise. Recruiting heavily in Texas. Stadium expansion to 60K and keep building. State of Oklahoma football improving immeasurably. (Greater Dallas metroplitan area moving into southern counties of Oklahoma.) This is not the old "Oke State". Conversely, old recruiting grounds of the Upper Midwest not what they used to be. Hard to find recruits like the Craig brothers out of Davenport, Iowa. This one will be close like the 2003 meeting in Lincoln.
