Cox Holds Early Offer
Getting excited about a player before they’ve even committed is a dicey proposition at best. Nevertheless, this being “secondary week” at the Big Red Network, we think it’s worth mentioning a safety prospect who’s reportedly highly interested in Nebraska and already holding an offer.
C.J. Cox reportedly holds offers from Wisconsin, New Mexico, and Oklahoma State in addition to NU. Cox has pretty standard measurables for a safety prospect as he goes 5’11”, 190 lbs. with a 4.6 40. Also noteworthy is his stated desire to play at Oklahoma, where he’ll be camping this summer. It’s yet another case of Nebraska and OU crossing paths on the recruiting trail.
But it raises an interesting question. If OU doesn’t offer him after they see him up close, do we really want to see him come to Nebraska? Sure recruiting is an inexact science and different kinds of athletes fit different systems, but realistically how can Nebraska surpass OU on the field with players OU doesn’t see fit to offer after taking a close look?
The best outcome for Husker fans is probably also the least likely. That is, OU offers, but Nebraska gets him anyway. It would feel particularly good if Cox committed to OU, then joined NU at the 11th hour (a la Travis Lewis). But don’t hold your breath waiting for it to happen.

Steve, I know you are just trying to be realistic but every recruit you have talked about you have talked like NE will not be able to recruit head to head with other schools. Personally I feel those days are behind us. I think as of right now we have a class of recruits that rivals anybody in America.

Hi Andrew,
Broadly, I wouldn't disagree. I love NU's recruiting these days. But this kid in particular said that if OU offers, he'll commit. That kind of affinity for a school is hard to overcome. But I'd rather NU have to overcome it, then simply get him because OU didn't offer.
