Corey Young’s Departure Hard to Gauge

Corey Young was sort of an enigma as a recruit. On the one hand he was among the lowest-rated members of the 2006 recruiting class. Part of that may be that his prior injuries caused him to be discounted. According to Rivals, Young averaged an incredible 13.3 yards per carry as a senior. Those are X-box numbers, not real football. They screamed upside. And he seemed to address a screaming need for defensive backs.

He managed to get on the field early, both in the secondary and on special teams. But he didn’t distinguish himself a great deal on either unit. Still, how much do you expect of a true freshman? It’s also easy to discount in-state players, especially when the offers they are getting are from schools like Iowa State.

We’ve seen a sort of natural selection, where players unlikely to be major contributors depart. That can be helpful in that it opens up a spot for a newcomer. Would Young have been a major contributor with as many as seven defensive backs coming in from the class of 2007 (Prince Amukamara, Larry Asante, LaTravis Washington, Eric Hagg, Armando Murillo, Anthony Blue, and Shawn Sullivan), most of whom were rated above Young? We’ll never know.

So how should Husker fans feel about the news Young is leaving? Well whether he was going to pan out or not, his departure means that his scholarship might have been better spent elsewhere and he was set to play at a position of need. That’s a bummer. But having that additional scholarship to offer could pay off in the future. So looking at the scholarship as a sunk cost, did the Huskers lose anything? Maybe not, but again we’ll never know.

"...especially when the offers they are getting are from schools like Iowa State..."

The arrogance is back. Of course, it never really left. Any hope that Nebraska fans would retain a little bit of humility from recent poor seasons is now lost, I guess. Didn't NU lose five games last year? That has become the standard for arrogance now, I guess. Wow, is the bar a lot lower in Lincoln or what?

Nebraska is 3-2 against ISU the last five years and everyone knows the 2005 game in Lincoln could have gone either way, it was double overtime after all. Looks to me like Nebraska has been getting the same kids ISU is offering because the talent level has been about the same for several years now.

Get ready for a big face full of Chiz this fall, Huskers!

Don't take it so personally Allen. I don't think it is any secret that ISU has struggled recently on the recruiting front.

But you've got a new coach now and reason to be optimistic. Why don't you go read Steve's review of ISU's recruiting class (which I think was quite balanced) before you start slinging mud?

See you in September.

Hi Allen,

This is a Husker site. The "sign out front" should have told you. But, hey, thanks for dropping by.

Anytime you want to chew the fat about the ISU-NU series or the current state of either progam, just have at it. We'll be here.

For the record -
Close losses are still losses. If you want to revel in those, go ahead savor the flavor of not getting mud-holed like you did in MANY other years. And, history doesn't start at 2002. NU has won more than 80% of its games with ISU. That's not arrogance, just the truth.

Jason and Darren! Keeping is real! As much as I liked your webpage, I like it TWICE as much now.
Honestly, I had to quickly read Steve's post 3 TIMES to even notice the Iowa st. mention! I thought Allen was just seeing things. May the thrills of '02 and '04 reverberate in his mind (as long as he needs it).

You guys do post on the huskerextra page, don't ya! (Do you?)

Allen,

Good luck to the Cyclones coming into Lincoln this fall. Really! With all due respect, ISU beat the worst two NU teams in the last 50 years. Congratulations on those monumental accomplishments. That's not to mention that in 2004, had Callahan not had so much pride in insisting on passing the ball, the Huskers could have won in Ames. Our recruiting now is far better than in the Solich years. Until you win the Big 12 North, don't come over here running your trap. NU is a dynasty, ISU is a wanna-be.

Allen, you are and always will be the bottom of the barrell in the Big 12 North. . .

Hey Allen...are you 17 years old this year? I figured you must be since you can only remember back to the 2001 season. Next time your thinking of a 5 year stint, be prepared to defend against a series total. It isn't any different than us picking oh I don't know....1995 when we hung a 73-14 thriller over you guys...or in 1997 when a late NU touchdown produced a 77-14 win. But hey, I'll let you have your 3-2 record for the last 5 years as long as you give me my 83-16-2 in the last 101 games.

Honestly, I love the clones and I'd love to see them competitive again in the upcoming years because I love good football games. Good luck next year clones...and keep the post coming Allen!!
